I have All Quiet On the Western Front and its cloth binding is scarlet. Considering it's a book from 1929, I'm not sure what counts as 20th Century for the people at Everyman's Library.

Don’t try to explain the love of books to people who don’t care for them, they will never, never understand. It is a deep passion... unexplainable. And yes, the smell is terrific.

“This beautiful depiction... of war.” 😂 Seriously, Everyman books are also so reader-friendly, which can’t be said of all hardbacks. The pocket classics are gorgeous!

You are so sensible and lucky! Everyman's library books are a delight to behold and hold. The paper is good, the font is just right, the typeface is easy on the eyes, the binding is both beautiful and durable. The book is section stitched so you can open it fully without fear. It is hard to get so many books in such uniform format of such quality. I have books from other series also, like the Modern Library, Penguins Hardcover, but i liked Everyman's more. So I have more than 50 of their regular volumes and almost all the volumes of their Pocket Poets series. I have the full volumes of these poets, but went for Everyman's for their sheer beauty. You must get the complete set of Shakespeare's plays. They serve the purpose of general reader, unless you want to become a critical scholar! I think you have a wonderful collection. All the best to you. May your collection grow. As a general rule, never buy paperbacks when hardcovers are available. Get an edition with introduction and notes. You may also try Library of America editions where complete volumes of famous American authors are available in uniform format. I thus got the complete set of Mark Twain, and the speeches and writings of LIncoln, Thoreau and Emerson. That too is a delightful series.

And I would add. Please get the two volumes of the works by the Indian writer R.K.Narayan. They are delightful stories.

You SHOULD be collecting the really OLD ones ! These were the really beautiful ones...most printed BEFORE 1960. They had a broader range of titles, and they were much more artistically designed and printed. If you saw some of them, I think you'd agree. Old bookstores (most of which no longer exist) used to be filled with them. I still have dozens and dozens of them. I guess the only place to get them now is Craig's list or Ebay.

I did not notice any "whistling s's" and I usually am quick to pick up on things like that, as it is very irritating to me as well, esp. if I get the impression that it is on purpose or an affect. Even going back and listening for them, I didn't notice anything. Anyhow, no one is forcing you to watch her videos. Being rude is worse than whistling your s's in my opinion.
