Story 1 the girlfriend sounds like she has Orthorexia. I’m a vegan and have run into a lot of people who use it as an excuse to mask their ED, and I think orthorexia is low key one that hides in plain sight because of the overlap with diet culture and wellness.

Orthorexia can be really dangerous too because there's whole swathes of Internet culture now promoting all sorts of extreme diets that are supposed to provide amazing benefits but are actually just terrible for you long term. But this does not sound like orthorexia, it sounds like anorexia! He even explicitly mentions that her preferences are for low calorie foods when she deviates outside of a very basic meal of steamed chicken and vegetables. When someone is really far into an ED they just stop eating certain foods entirely to cut out the calories and it sounds like she's just cut out foods until all she's left with is chicken veg and fruit. When you'd regularly rather skip a meal than eat a restaurant salad that's just the hugest red flag to me. I really hope she gets the support she needs

Re Story #1: As someone with disordered eating who finds all kinds of creative ways to evade questioning/scrutiny from friends and family, I think the gf could possibly have an ED or some kind of relationship with eating that is more complex than just being picky. I honestly wouldn't blame OP for calling it quits on that, but if they wish to stay, they could try to create a comfortable environment for gf to open up and share more of her thoughts and reasoning when it comes to foods. I've had a friend and also a partner who did that for me (I often hid my compulsion to cut calories behind various health concerns & diet restrictions that I didn't care about as much as I made it seem). Hopefully OP can support their gf on this, if that's actually whats going on with her.

The first “Rate This Date” story: Josh said he couldn’t understand why a girl would say yes to a date if she didn’t really want to go. I’ve done it a few times in my life, especially as a teen. I would feel bad turning guys down, especially if they were nice and I just wasn’t interested in them, because I didn’t want to hurt their feelings. I’ve also been told by guys I’ve turned down that I’m a bitch for rejecting them or have had friends/family tell me to just give someone a chance (“one date won’t harm you.”) When society conditions women to be submissive, always be nice, put the guy’s feelings above your own (especially since you don’t know if they will violently react), it’s really easy to get trapped in dates you don’t want to be in - doubly so if you are insecure and haven’t found the confidence to stand up for yourself

She's also trained to help me with my panic attacks to stop me if I hurt myself. I've only had 1 job where I felt so comfortable with having her with me my mangers/coworkers all understood my health issues and her stance. But I had another job who kept questioning me. He is willing to try foods, but hates most things. We grocery shop and cook separately. It does bother me that traveling makes it hard if the restaurants don't have chicken tenders and bbq sauce. If I do want to cook something that is in a large quantity, I cook for my coworkers. They love when I cook for them so I'm thankful I'm not stuck with 10 servings of gumbo when I make it.

I think the guys missed a lot in Story 1, this is a self imposed diet with that many restrictions that sounds like and ED and she needs help but if someone isn't willing to get help, dating wise, I think it is fair to walk away. As far as his question, I think it is possible to be incompatible because of food choices esp if someone has food as a part of how they live their life and enjoy life. If it means more than just sustenance then it will be difficult to go through life with someone who cant understand wanting to travel to a new place to try something yummy.

Can't even have maple syrup anymore (it was my last bastion of sweetener aside from chopped up tangerines). I wish I could talk to this girl & tell her some of the work arounds I discovered, like tigernut flour (it's not a nut, it's a root). And plantains are a life saver. Kelp noodles are the only ones I can have. Idk if she's a no for ALL spices, as I can have any that are not nightshades or ground seeds (that leaves cinnamon, ginger, mace, wasabi powder, & turmeric & anything leafy). He keeps saying it's self imposed, but the fact that her diet sounds like mine... idk man, maybe she's just too embarassed to tell him she has Severe IBS. It is embarassing, esp after thst MFing Along Came Polly movie. I fucking love food too MFer, I just like not being doubled over in stabby stomach pain, crying on the kitchen floor a bit more than those forbidden foods. My breakfast is minced plantains, chopped tangerine, coconut milk, tigernut flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger & mace in a mug in the microwave for 2:30 min. That's the only breakfasty food I can have. And sure, travelling is hard, but I managed to make it work in Indonesia. 🤷♀️ Maybe I'm wrong and she's not lying not having about medical issues, but I'm very suspicious. I miss people food soooooo much.😭💔 Sometimes I say Fuck It and have a bite of a "medium forbidden" food. I'm only human.

Sounds like she’s very thin and watches her calories to the single digit. As long as she’s healthy then I give her commitment props. What it sounds like is she DOES eat, it’s just extremely restrictive in restaurants because everything is heaped in butter or olive oil. You know to keep the “model” shape it’s literally a 1200 calorie a day diet and it’s rough. It also sounds like she’s not difficult when she’s gladly join and not eat, I do wonder if she can order steamed veggies though. I do that sometimes. Like I just realized how much calories are really in restaurant food and it’s insane to think about. As far as compromise, she IS comprising. By still joining and not ordering foods that’s a compromise instead of “no we can’t eat there because I can’t eat there” It sounds like she’s fully compromising, he’s the one that doesn’t like that she won’t give in and just give up her diet to share food with him. Also it’s expensive because those places probably use higher quality food which means less coverup ingredients like butter and junk like that.

Sure both places want you to be slim, or look like a twig that'll snap at the lightest of breezes (looking at all the, most likely, anorexic French models that was the "goal" for girls when I grew up in the 90s. They were like the girl that youtube don't like being mentioned, but her first name starts with E and her last name starts with C). But I've never heard of any Western country doing that shoe thing, to get women to have small feet, which I want to say was popular in either China or Japan (I could be wrong, but it was an Asian country). Then we have Africa with those weird (sorry) neck rings to elongen your neck.
