________________
I've listed all of the items in my description below.
I believe the Gh5 is still a relevant piece of gear to this day, even though camera manufacturers are producing more and more cameras out every 3-6 months now. I bought my gh5 when last year when I transitioned from photography to video work. I do a lot of different kinds of video work, so I knew wanted to have the ability to outfit this camera based on my needs and wants.
I want to make this clear that my filmmaking journey is totally different from yours. I have been truly blessed to have worked with several companies that have exchanged products for content to some degree. So yes, at face value this rig is just as expensive as an fs5, fs7 and evening an Ursa mini pro. So in order for me to really capitalize on my situation, I’ve invested in certain gear that I know will help me with the kind of content want to create.
So let's dive into this rig. There are two styles of filmmaking in moving into, narrative and documentary. Filming with a particular lens, like the SLR magic anamorphic lenses, there is a certain way in mind to build this rig.
This item I thought about was power. I wanted a single battery solution to that powered my inferno, gh5, and zoom h5. So I picked up the Core swx powerbase. Its a 48wh and This has the right about of power ports with two d-taps and two USB connections. Normal run time is just under 2 hours. I have it lay down attached to a smallrig vmount plate and cheese plate.
I had some 18inch 15mm rods which are kind of perfect for the length of the whole rig from lens to back. So after putting my lens support (always use lens support) I already had solutions for my follow focus. Now it was just figuring out how to see because obviously, the camera sits too far back. So I had this piece from my first shoulder rig - Redrock micro left 15mm rod. I bought a smallrig cage for my inferno and a nato to 15mm piece which attaches perfectly.
Lastly, the should mount and handles. From my research smallrig sold the more afford - high-quality VCT should rig. Okay ima pause, I have a lot of smallrig parts - but no means is the company sponsoring this video lol...that just make some really awesome and affordable piece of gear.
It’s smaller than I thought it would be but it's pretty comfortable once you get the correct weight on. Which I will come back to. I bought the wooden handles from camevate - they had a deal on Amazon for the arm extensions and the handles for $200. Which was actually cheaper that smallrig handles for $100 a per piece… The handles do make it comfortable to handle the rig. However, I have big handles so my ring finger and middle finger touches the metal rosette.
Balancing this set up is interesting. The combination of the lens and inferno does shift the weight forward, but adding a counterweight would fix that and getting ninja V or shinobi as well.
The follow focus is on the right side for obvious reasons, and I went with my older follow focus from Redrock because it attached to both rods rather than one like my edlekrone.
I really only use IBIS when I'm making a pull, push, and gliding shots.
The overall weight of the rig is about 15 pounds. The shorter arms and helps to stay tight with my body.
Anyway, I hope this gave you some insight as to why I went in this direction. Feel free to ask any questions and stay tuned for more content especially completed films. Until next time, peace.

I wonder how much does it cost to put that rig together. You might be close to the price of a C200 or Ursa mini pro if you consider the time it takes to assemble the rig and be ready to shoot. When I tried smaller cameras with rigs like this it made it hard to run and gun, and I would end up taking the monitor out or the follow focus. I love the video though, and the footage for the docs is looking great man. Great work.

The rig might be expensive, but you can keep the components and use them with future camera bodies when you upgrade. I use the same rig for my gh5, s5 and s1h, I only swap the camera body and cage.

100%, the more weight you have the easier it is to actually balance. My handheld rig with the 1DXII gives more pleasing handheld movement because there's less of my hands shaking in it. Imma be throwing up something in the next few months too brother !

Joshua Martin Studios I tend to move my camera a little bit more, but think I was asking the wrong question. I have used the pocket camera before, and since you own one you might have noticed this. That camera’s rolling shutter will kick in even on the slowest of pans. I don’t see that on other cameras. I noticed it even on a cartoni tripod that’s rated to handle a 25lb rig. Does that get better as you get used to operating the BMPCC4K? Thanks for your help!

Nice setup and video! It’s really amazing what the GH5 can do in the right hands. I can tell you’ve really studied the GH5 to make it suit your needs. It’s the same logic for any camera. Cinematographers are really a blend of an artist and technician that can make any capable camera work to their style. Looking forward to seeing what you create in the narrative and documentary space!
