So far Storm has reacted to some Alice In Chains and Nirvana. Now it's time to get her onto the stuff that really made me fall in love with Thrash Metal. I chose Metallica 'One' for her to react to because that song slightly gets heavier all the way through the song up until the very end. I thought that would be a good way to show her just exactly what Metallica are capable of!
Here is my girlfriends reaction to hearing Metallica - One for the first time. I hope you enjoy it!

The heaviness of this song can't be overstated. It starts off quite melodic, getting heavier...heavier...heavier. And the lyrical content (plus the music video) is just brutal. Heard it for the first time probably 20 years ago and I still get chills "darkness! imprisoning me!..."

This song was a lot of people's first exposure of Metallica, since it was the very first music video they ever did, so it had heavy rotation on MTV and was nominated for awards and all that. Metallica was always an underground band until that time... radio stations never played them unless it was maybe a college radio station that played metal. They managed to get as big as they were simply from word of mouth back in the day. This song really boosted them... and then obviously, the Black Album put them into the stratosphere as far as popularity.

Not to mention Guitar Hero later on. I was 7 when I first heard this song on Guitar Hero 3. No doubt it’s partially responsible for introducing the band to a whole new generation and maintaining their popularity as in this final stage of their career

Was just telling my 18 year old daughter about seeing this song live in 1991-ish, in a small venue on the campus of North Dakota State University in Fargo. The second half of the song the band completely turned their backs to the crowd, circled the drum riser, and fucking jammed! An experience I will never forget.

Its softer than all the other ones because its considered to be a power ballad. Metallica has a formula. 1st song is the thrashing opener, 2nd is the title track or main song, third is the other song but slower, and 4th is the power ballad. The instrumental before the final song. And the last song on the album is always a simple thrasher that goes back to what Kill Em All sounded like. Also, One is played on the radio in full. Nothing is edited.

Mainstream music has typically been about following a formula and fitting into a certain degree of rules that allow the music to be more predictable, easier to digest, and more palatable to the masses. Metal has always been about the rebellion and not allowing the music to be shoved into a box just for the sake of popularity, essentially a big middle finger to those that want to constrain creativity in exchange for money. Once mainstream has trained your ears it's difficult to break through that barrier and does take time to give up the sense of control in what music "should sound like". Some are fine just boppin' around to the top hits and that's 100% ok but true metal heads don't want music tailored to what most would like, we want to make that decision for ourselves. I sense that Storm is more of the latter she just hasn't broken through just yet but with each reaction I can see that inner metal head starting to rise up! Great content. Really enjoying the journey.
