His version is probable, but there are other possibilities to consider; to pay for their drugs (she may also be an addict) or the money may have been used for restitution towards herself and/or others. During his abuse, he may have committed crimes including theft, vandalism, public disorder, etc. Even rich people with addictions break the law.
