What I really love about this movie in the way of the characters, is that both Cap and Iron Man come out this through their growth in the other films. For example, Iron Man is directly responsible for the events of Age of Ultron and now thinks that oversight is a good thing. On the other side of things, Cap saw what too much oversight could do in the Winter Soldier and grew untrusting of positions of authority. So it makes a lot of sense that they would take the stance that they did on the Accords.

This is still my favorite MCU movie. I love how there are 2 BIG dilemmas in this movie (sokovia accords, bucky killing tony's parents), and both dilemmas cause a divide within the avengers. However, I believe both sides are morally correct, in BOTH situations! I'm personally team Cap for both situations, but I could never fault anyone for being team Tony for either. I think thats what makes the movie so genius. It feels like a unwinnable situation for the team.

@Draugheim
@Draugheim Жыл бұрын
The death of his parents is understandable, sure. No one would think rationally in that situation. The accords however? I really can't understand tonys side, at all. Sokovia was his fault, and his alone. If anything he should have just retired himself and let the others continue. The others? Well that wasn't really the avengers fault, and more people would have died for sure if they didn't do what they did. With our modern politicians and corrupt governments... would you really let THEM decide when and where to use them? I mean, as an example: Russia is a part of the U.N (and have veto on votes), enough said. Oh, and China too. Tony should know this better than anyone, he was in the arms trade for many years. Probably dealt with a lot of politicians etc. He felt guilty for his own mistakes. Team cap all the way.
@sguinn91
@sguinn91 Жыл бұрын
@@Draugheim I agree. If Tony did not build Ultron, they wouldn't be in the mess they are in. Why the heck would you put your trust in the Government over what the Avengers should do and how to do it? As an independent, I honestly do not think either side of the political spectrum would matter because they couldn't figure out what to do. They just would make the Avengers choose sides and argue again. Either way, you lose. That's why I stick with Team Cap as well.
@stijnvandenheuvel8117
@stijnvandenheuvel8117 Жыл бұрын
@Draugheim gonna copy a comment I made in another video about Tony being completely at fault for Sokovia because I can't stand it when people say that. ""We didn't. We weren't even close. Were we close to an interface?" Remember that line? I'll concede that Stark and Banner (who everyone always seems to forget) are responsible for creating Ultron, but Ultron basically activated itself when they weren't in the room, and weren't even aware that he could do that, I think that line makes it clear that they hadn't moved passed trying to establish a way to communicate and access the AI already in the scepter. Maybe a weird analogy, but saying Tony is responsible for what happened with Sokovia (not Ultron itself), is like saying a man is responsible for the actions of a kid he was never told he had after a one-night stand. Sure they're both responsible for creating the one committing the actions, but they had no way of preventing or controlling those actions after that, because they never even had the option of raising them (again, no interface sounds to me like they wouldn't even be able to access, let alone modify the 'code' in the Mind Stone)." I'd like to add to the topic of the Accords specifically by saying that (afaik) most people on Tony's side aren't necessarily in favor of the Accords, but instead believe that the Avengers require oversight and accountability for the collateral damage they leave in their wake. Does that mean someone like Ross should have power over the Avengers? Absolutely not, and it also doesn't mean the Avengers should lose all say in whether they intervene somewhere, but I do think Ross' speech is overlooked too much. "What would you call a group of US-based, enhanced individuals who routinely ignore sovereign borders and inflict their will wherever they choose and who, frankly, seem unconcerned about what they leave behind?" Imagine something like that in the real world. Would you really accept a real world Avengers Initiative under those conditions? How about "My father lived outside the city. I thought we would be safe there. My son was excited. He could see the Iron Man from the car window. I told my wife, "Don't worry. They are fighting in the city. We're miles from harm." When the dust cleared . . . and the screaming stopped. It took me two days until I found their bodies. My father . . . still holding my wife and son in his arms. And the Avengers? They went home." Do you really think Zemo is the only person something like this happened to? I mean we even know of a very similar situation with Charlie Spencer, should a group like this really be able to operate with "unlimited power and no supervision?" If anything I'd say it's surprising that the UN took so long to intervene, especially considering Winter Soldier happened 2 years before the Accords were brought up.

T'challa lost his father in tragic way in front of his eyes when he was already grown up (already formed personality) and he did try his best to kill a man he believed killed his father. After some time to cool off and learning the truth about who killed his father and why (it wasn't aimed at him or his father, wasn't on purpose, they weren't direct targets, I'm not trying to justify anything I'm just saying that he understood what Zimo said).
@2000....
@2000.... 3 жыл бұрын
Statment isn't completly true: T' Challa tried to kill Bucky in the first place but failed. Tried it again, failed again. When he found out it was Zemo and not Bucky he finally exepted the death of his father and imprisioned Zemo. Tony found out his father was killed by Bucky and Steve even knew it without telling him. He tries to kill Bucky but he fails. However after that he never tried to kill him again, Tonymoved on like T'Challa did.

What a lot of people don’t understand is that the entire point of Cap acting a bit more on his emotions is his character development. Instead of being that square, boy scout kinda guy, he needs some sort of depth. It’s to show that Cap isn’t perfect, but he’s always trying his best and to Cap, he can see that in everyone, Tony included. That’s why he sent that letter in the end of the movie. Both sides of this movie are heavily misunderstood by the other.

Wonderful reaction as always! This movie is definitely stressful because we love them all and hate seeing them fight! I wish they'd pointed out that Steve knew Howard too though. Tony once referred to Steve as "that guy my dad wouldn't shut up about" so I feel like just a line of acknowledgement in there would have helped a lot, especially since we saw Steve and Howard so much in CA:FA. Steve has come to terms with the fact that Bucky was brainwashed but it's gotta be hard for him too and I'm kinda surprised Tony didn't throw that in his face a bit. It would probably have helped Tony understand longterm when things aren't so raw that Steve really is in the middle on this one no matter what angle you're coming from. It's just tragic and seeing Bucky put himself back into the chamber to avoid hurting anyone is so sad.
@surfersilver6610
@surfersilver6610 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah people TOTALLY miss Steve is caught in a 3-way emotional-connection fight with Bucky & Howard being long time friends from his era and now Tony a new friend in the present who is also the son of Howard Stark(Thanks to Fonduing). Steve could hate Bucky for what he did but being a soldier along with Howard they know they might have to pay a price for being who they are(military) and have more fortitude/restraint in that area having seen death 1st hand in battles, where Tony is NOT a Soldier(As seen in Avengers 1 when Steve asks Tony, Tony has no experience other than his capture in Iron Man 1) so he can't handle that stuff. Let's not even get into the organization his Peggy started being infiltrated and co-responsible for this whole mess(They knew Howard Starks movements, probably bugged his car/person etc.). So make that a 4-Way connection....and not in the kinky way, this isn't Deadpool.

Context: Wanda was raised in a war-torn country and her adoptive parents died when she was a child. Vision is attractive to her because he is gentle and decent above everything else. In the comic books, her biological father is an unstable, abusive supervillain, which was all the more reason to turn to someone stable like Vision. Explanation: T'Challa was being modest. The title of Black Panther has been around for thousands of years, ever since the goddess Bast left Egypt for Wakanda if not earlier. It is always someone from the royal family because the herb that produces the superpowers is poison to anyone else. The children of the royal family gradually build resistance to it through gradual exposure.

It was definitely emotion-based. His best friend growing up, and with Peggy now dead, is his only connection to his past that he lost. He is a man out of time and that takes a toll more than he shows. He also had the guilt of his friend being in that position because he fell from that train because he believed in Steve and went with him on his team. On top of all of that, his emotions with Peggy recently dying and the stress of all the events and failures and now the accords on his shoulders are probably so enormous the idea of his world being pulled out of his control can not be underestimated. The break from his perceived normal behavior is really just a combination of the stress and challenge of his past loyalties and life and by the uncertainty of his future and the weight of the present. The fact that he kept it together as well as he did is a testament to the boy scout he is despite the influence of modern life it is nothing short of amazing. All of this abnormal behavior is understandable and yet at the same time is quite believable for his character if you take the whole picture into play. He may seem integrated into the current life but he is only a few years removed from his past a past that is a much larger part of him than this past few years. He never really stopped being a soldier at war. So while he is immensely close to the other avengers as a fellow soldier there is also this divide because they can't really understand his experience as a man out of time. From start to finish this couldn't be more than 4 years? Think of all the things he went through in that time.

My favorite moment in the movie is when Spidey effortlessly catches winter soldiers arm. We've watched Bucky tear through heroes and villains like a hot knife through butter for several movies now, and Spidey stops him on a dime That's how strong Spidey is, and the film makers knew it and didn't make a big deal out of it, just showed it casually. I thought that was brilliant

It's great to see that you've made another Marvel fan through this series...slowly our army grows, lol. Wondering if you'll watch Infinity War + Endgame with Matt & the rest of the crew. I don't know if Jen will be able to top Matt's reaction at the end of Endgame, but soon she'll know the pain that comes with having to wait months to years between movies. The reason the spider-man suit was cg in this movie is because they changed the design of the suit mid production because they decided last second that the design wasn't working. The suit tom wore on set was different to the suit that appeared in the film. It had raised webbing and a spider logo on the chest that was ripped straight from the ditko/lee era of spider-man.

I always feel too many people, especially a lot of Team Stark people, put too much emphasis on WS killing Tony's parents when it comes to the "which side?" argument. Tony finds that out in the last 5 mins of the film. The rest of the film is about disagreeing over a) the accords and then b) how to deal with WS being on the run. THAT is what you need to consider when debating who was right or wrong. Not the last 5 mins lol

Winter Soldier being on the run isn't really much of an issue. He's on the run because as soon as Ross thought Bucky was responsible for bombing the UN he issued a "kill on sight" order for him. No presumption of innocence. No due process. Just a reflexive presumption of guilt and rush to summary execution. And all of this despite knowing that Winter Soldier is a HYDRA asset, a mind-controlled assassin who only acts upon the orders of his HYDRA "superiors". So why is no one interested in finding his HYDRA handlers and learning/foiling their plan? Fundamentally, this film is about the Accords. Because Bucky IS the Accords. The Accords seek to put the Avengers under the control of an "advisory panel" which will decide whether on not any of them will be deployed. Bucky is under the control of HYDRA which decides when and where he will be deployed. The Avengers would not be able to choose their own missions. Bucky was never allowed to choose his own missions. The Avengers would not be allowed to refuse a mission. Bucky was not allowed to refuse a mission. Bucky is exactly what the Accords is trying to create. And Team Stark try to kill him for it. Repeatedly. T"Challa, despite backing the Accords after his father's death, immediately sets out on his own to murder Bucky. He doesn't bother seeking the approval of an UN panel. He isn't acting on orders from his superiors. He doesn't even make the most minimal attempt to discover if Bucky is even responsible for his father's death. And he seems to think that the restrictions the Accords place on all superpeople don't apply to him because reasons. Stark, who gives his big heartfelt speech about how the Avengers need to be put in check, need oversight or they're just as bad as the bad guys...immediately evades Ross' oversight as soon as it becomes inconvenient in order to track down Steve and Bucky. And then, despite knowing that Bucky could not have refused to follow his orders to kill Howard and Martha, nonetheless immediately tries to murder Bucky himself. Tony supports the Accords to escape his own guilt for the destruction and deaths his actions have caused. He seeks to use the Accords to offload that guilt onto others, even though by signing the Accords he is voluntarily choosing to accept the authority of the UN over him thereby making him still morally accountable for accepting the legitimacy of the Accord Panel's authority and obeying their orders. But Bucky never chose to join HYDRA. Bucky had his free will stripped form him. Bucky is morally blameless - -and still feels guilty anyway. Cap, on the other hand, advocates personal responsibility. He champions taking the credit and the blame for his actions. He opposes the Accords as morally monstrous while simultaneously protecting Bucky, the living avatar of the Accords, the living victim of the Accords...from the supporters of the Accords. When Cap says that the Accords would mean not being able to go where they were needed or being sent on a mission they oppose, he wasn't just talking about the Avengers. He was talking about Bucky. Cap protects Bucky because he knows that, as a perfect soldier of the Accords, Bucky is morally blameless for his actions under HYDRA, that Bucky is just another one of HYDRA's victims. And Cap can't just sit by while injustice is done to an innocent man. What Civil War shows is the utter hypocrisy of the pro-Accords faction. The supporters of the Accords (mostly Tony) ignore the Accords whenever they become inconvenient. They offer to subvert the Accords by unilaterally offering amnesty for Cap et al. And they repeatedly try to murder the Accords in the person of Bucky. All while constantly pontificating about how they have the moral high ground while Cap is being selfish and short-sighted.

@@flatebo1 It's a well written wall of text but something bugs me... You call the Pro-accords hypocrites for dodging their oversight and yet you fail to call out the anti-accords on the fact that, despite their "personal responsability" boner, they never hold Wanda responsible. "But it was an accident !" Yet she still blew up a building full of innocents, accidental murder still has to go into court. Instead, Cap acts offended when he learns that Tony has her locked up... Like, Cap talks a lot about taking the blame but none of his team really does beyond saying "Yeah, my bad" before continuing as usual. Also, Ross ordering kill on sight for Bucky is just logical. The dude has been a Super assassin for a century and first thing he does when he reappears is blowing up an UN building, presumption of innocence is neat and all but doesn't really help in arresting cyborg assassins. Just to prove my point : once activated, he juggernauts his way through Cap, Tony, Black Widow and Black Panther... How would you even attempt to detain this dude for a trial ? Last thing on the pro-accords' hypocrisy: the point of the accords, beyond limiting the avengers power, is to show that they're at the very least willing to play ball with the rest of the world. Realisticly, no one can stop them, accords or not, but signing them shows that they're willing to listen. The fact that Cap throws a fit and doesn't realize that none of the pro-accords would sit on their asses if the UN forbid them from helping is... Concerning. That's one of the big problems with the "whatever the world says, you don't move" idea. When you're convinced you're always right, you don't listen to others and end up creating useless conflicts... But hey, at least you're right, right ?

@@hondshoven8477 " Yet she still blew up a building full of innocents, accidental murder still has to go into court." So who's going to court for the murder of a family of 10 Afghanis? Who, if anyone, is attempting to hold Wanda legally accountable? Are the Wakandans seeking to try her for the deaths of their embassy personnel? Is the government of Lagos seeing her arrest and trial? Crossbones had already detonated his suicide bomb. Wanda was trying to contain and explosion and move it out of the market. She was not entirely successful. Trying and failing to save people is now a crime? It's not like she negligently dropped a truck on some people. And BTW, murder is the intentional killing of a person without cause. Wanda's actions could only be murder if she intended to blow up the Wakandan embassy. Do you think this was the case? "Instead, Cap acts offended when he learns that Tony has her locked up." What legal authority does Tony have to imprison anyone? "Also, Ross ordering kill on sight for Bucky is just logical" Do you remember the end of Winter Soldier? Y'know, when Natasha wears that mask thing to impersonate Jenny Agutter? So why would anyone immediately think that someone who looks sorta like Bucky on a mediocre-quality video must necessarily be Bucky? We arrest and try people in order to determine whether a person is guilty of the crime they are accused of. We do not immediately execute them by presuming their guilt. Yet these are the "moral" people? "Just to prove my point : once activated, he juggernauts his way through Cap, Tony, Black Widow and Black Panther... How would you even attempt to detain this dude for a trial ?" So, once activated Bucky blows through everybody and is never seen again, eh? Gee, how did they "even attempt to detain (him) for trial?" "Realistically, no one can stop them, accords or not, but signing them shows that they're willing to listen. " So, they should accept restraints no matter what those restraints are? As I mentioned, the entire purpose of the Accords (if Cap's characterization is to be believed, and no one disputes him) is to turn the Avengers into Winter Soldiers - mindlessly obedient supersoldiers who only do exactly as ordered. That's slavery. So their options are either, what, slavery of prison? "That's one of the big problems with the "whatever the world says, you don't move" idea. When you're convinced you're always right, you don't listen to others and end up creating useless conflicts... But hey, at least you're right, right ?" So convince me I'm wrong. Convince me that my facts are incomplete. Convince me that my moral standards are not actually moral. Convince me that your position is better. Make an argument, not an ultimatum. Tony never makes an actual argument for the Accords. No one does. No one ever makes the case for why the Accords are just and moral. They merely assert that they are. "We need restraints." OK, but why THESE restraints? We need oversight." OK, but why THESE overseers? Tony makes emotional appeals. Tony makes pragmatic arguments. He never makes a moral case. You also might want to consider that, to all appearances, the Accords were written by people without superpowers to govern people with superpowers. Going so far as to apparently claim authority over people like Thor, the heir to the ruler of a sovereign nation of people all similarly superpowered (by comparison to humans), a nation which is not a member of the UN. That seems a bit of a stretch. Tony (and the other pro-Accord folks) are convinced that they are right. They never actually listen to Steve's objections. They just wave him off with "well, we can fix this stuff later" while, y'know, condoning the immediate murder of Bucky for a crime he didn't commit. So who ended up creating a useless conflict?

Tony and Steve started out their journeys on opposite ends of the liberty vs justice pendulum, and over the course of phases 1-2 they ended up switching positions. Stark went from “you can’t have it” to “maybe we need to be controlled.” Whereas Rogers went from Loyal Soldier with a conscience, to becoming disillusioned by the authorities that had seized control of the world. Both their journeys were totally believable to me, and I always appreciate how they both changed, however heartbreaking it was to see the dissolution of their friendship. Something they both probably recognized subconsciously, but couldn’t put into words, was the idea that “I’m finally coming around to ‘your’ side, but now you’re going in the other direction” which just adds an extra layer of betrayal for both of them. Does that make any sense?
