beckett's death is really brilliant. His line "its nothing personal, its just good business" coming back at the end with him showing that he had nothing personal against jack and the others, and he knew he was losing so he had no reason to fire back.

Will couldn't just stand in a bucket of water to see Elizabeth. That would be breaking the rules of the flying duchman. If Will did it, he would turn into a fish face like Davy Jones, that was the whole reason Davy Jones became a squid face is because he broke the rules of his purpose, to ferry lost souls onto the other side. Also Beckett's ship isn't the Interceptor, The Interceptor was the ship Jack commandeered in the first movie and was later blown up by Barbossa. Beckett's ship is called The Endevor. As for Beckett's death scene, aside from just looking spectacular, respectfully I have to disagree with yall. I think it's perfect for Beckett's character. His whole thing has been control. He has remained on top of nearly every interaction with every character, little has fazed him. He has clearly thought of all outcomes and knows what to do in each. And of course he has spent this entire film attempting to control the seas, which as proven by the existence of Calypso, is impossible to do. And now, his arrogance and total failure to understand the magic that he believes he has beaten is literally blowing up in his face. He did not predict this. He did not believe for a second this could happen. And all he can do now is completely fail to comprehend what is happening. He can only walk. Only because he believed himself un-defeatable is he now being defeated. And THAT'S what really makes that scene a masterpiece. But that's just my opinion. lol.

The reason why Beckett didn’t fire the weapons was because he doesn’t fight with weapons in general! He fights with negotiation and politics. He tries to control people by negotiating with them as hard as he can! that’s why he was a different villain! :) I feel like a lot of people don’t understand the universal pirates of the Caribbean! ☠️☠️☠️ I’ve been standing up for 2/3 over part 1. I'll agree with Jen that he should have fought back because they had three sets on both sides which means he still had more cannons than both of the other ships combined though seeing how his ship was disintegrated I originally didn't even think about it. He should have still technically outgunned both of them easily but if he did fire back all three ships would have sank which is hardly a win for him either way.

Also, they really hammer home in the first movie that the Black Pearl is THE best ship in the ocean. It makes a mockery of the best ships of the East India Company, it's able to pull off incredible manoeuvres, and it's very fast. The only ship that's better would be the ship that belongs to basically the God of the Ocean, Davy Jones. So you've essentially got two ships so legendarily good they're practically mythical, sailing straight at you, about to give you a broadside. It'd be enough to make anyone freeze up.

The final victory was a sneak attack. The bad guy (Beckett) was so arrogant, and all of a sudden he went from having an ally in the Flying Dutchmen, to it coming out of the water out of nowhere, and then start shooting at him. I actually appreciated the humanity at that point. He was literally in shock and disbelief.

For the maelstrom sequence, they built a building in the desert with full sized Pearl and Dutchman ships. They were on hydraulics and at a 30 degree angle. Jack was once a proper sailor for the British Royal Navy, but his services were sold to the East India Trading Company. This is where he meets Beckett, who assigned Jack to deliver a cargo shipment from England the Caribbean. To Jack's surprise, the shipment was actually a collection of slaves. Jack (being Jack) freed the slaves because he felt it was wrong and was labeled a pirate for doing so. This is when Beckett sunk the Black Pearl, Jack's ship, prompting Jack to ask Davy Jones to raise the ship from the depths. There was a brilliant scene where Beckett said that Jack's "good deed" cost Beckett an enormous fortune not to mention the cargo he was supposed to deliver, Jack responded by quietly saying "People aren't cargo, mate." Another cut scene from the same sequence had Jack thank Beckett unprovoked. When Becket asked what Jack was thankful for, Jack said, "You have spared me the possibility of becoming anything other than what I am." Beckett was much more built out as a villain and made Jack a lot more human, but they cut it to keep the rating at PG-13 and on "Disney Brand". Cutting this storyline also made Jack's death in the second film less important. Remember the village of fishermen (where the gang met Tia Dalma)? The people that were mourning Jack's death, somberly holding candles in knee-deep water to pay respect after he was killed by the Kraken? Those were the slaves that Jack freed at the cost of his own life and freedom. He had helped them set up a small island for themselves to live on, and some of his first pirate excursions were to collect supplies that they might need to build up their society in seclusion. Jack knew that if any of them were ever found, they would be returned to slavery. Additionally, in the first-ever Pirates of the Caribbean film, when Elizabeth is berating Jack for being a drunk who sat on a beach until someone came to rescue him, there was a cut piece of dialogue that really made Jack a lot darker than Disney wanted him to go. Elizabeth says, "Are any of the stories I've read about you true, or not?!" Jack responds by pulling up his sleeves and opening his shirt which reveals dozens of scars and mangled injuries that have poorly healed. While it's never stated, these scars and injuries are assumed to have been sustained either in his escape from the Navy following his betrayal of Beckett, him being tortured, or from his time as a pirate. Either way, if Beckett hadn't asked Jack to make a cargo shipment of people, Jack would be a free man. They retconned this choice because we later see Jack shirtless with nothing other than tattoos on his body. This is the whole crux of Jack's character, whose development and arc was completely cut from the last film to save time since the film was already bloated. It's established much better in the cut scenes of At World's End that Jack wants to take Davy Jones' place as Captain of the Dutchman to ensure his survival, which makes it all the more heartbreaking when he sacrificed that goal to save Will in the final fight. You see a remnant of that story arc in the scene when Jack hesitates to stab the heart, but it's less out of fear of commitment and more out of the impulsive anger to kill the person that killed his friend. Jack sacrifices all that he's ever wanted, to sail the seas forever, to save Will, and almost nobody knows about that choice because they cut everything leading up to it.

To Jen: The reason Becket froze up was that his plans fell apart. The entire time, Becket was operating according to his plans, everything that happened was something that he'd accounted for in his head. He never accounted for that the Dutchman would switch allegiances, whichwas a result of Jack's selflessness in saving Will. So basically, Becket lost because Jack chose to do the right thing, just as Elizabeth predicted. Becket froze as his ship - and has master plan of order and oppression - crumbled around him. It's deeply poetic and I love it.

In my opinion this movie is perfect. The trilogy is perfect. I guess people tend not to take it just as seriously as other epic stories, for example Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter, etc, because it has a lot of humour but in my opnion deserves to be praised just as much as those stories. Also, many people don't pay enough attention to the movies to catch sme of the subtle explanations to what happened in this world and some of the subtle explanations of how the supernatural stuff works in the series. Great video, as always! I wish you reacted to one of my favourite conversations in the whole franchise but unfortunatly you skipped it in the reaction. I am talking about the one where Jack and Barbossa talk about how "The world used to be a bigger place" to wich Jack replies "The world is still the same. There's just less in it". This dialogue can be applied to so many things in our day to day life and is very special to me.

I’d be interested to see what happens in the 6th as they teased Davy Jones returning and Johnny has loosened his stance on never working with Disney again. It’d also be interesting to see a prequel about Davy Jones and how he came to be the mythical creature he is. Idk. I’d just love to see another Pirates movie if they manage to do it right and have a good story to tell.

To me, this was the best way of finishing this franchise… With the 2nd and the 3rd movie, been like a Part 1 and Part 2; this movies have some things that makes this movies a master piece. 1. Hans Zimmer soundtrack to me this movie has the most incredible pieces of music of all the trilogy. 2. The characters arc, to me the most notorious was Elizabeth’s, from been the Governor’s daughter, to be one of the Pirate Lords, Queen of the Pirate Court, Will’s wife (who’s the Dutchman captain), and also and amazing sword master, because no many people can give Davy Jones a sword fight. 3. The passion of Barbosa to everything he is doing through the movie… From the “What RRR you doing”, to him enjoying killing people and also the way he talks and laughs… 😅 So I love that you can appreciate this franchise and love it as much as I do.

The reason in the end that Will had to go away for 10 years is that he was suppose to ferry the souls of the dead. Davy Jones was always suppose to do that but became corrupted (hence tentacles and stuff.) and didn't actually do his job. This can be seen from a scene earlier in the movie while in the realm of the dead where calypso mentions that Davy Jones was suppose to be the ferry for the lost souls and clearly wasn't as they saw souls within the water that were just floating lost. At the end when you see the flying Dutchman head off into the distance, you see a spark of green light. That is will turner essentially leaving the mortal world and entering the world of the dead where he is to continue his job for 10 years of ferrying the dead. Unlike how we see Davy jones who primarily stays within the mortal world and seems to terrorize shipwrecks to convince mortal individuals at deaths door to serve him. Essentially going with him would have been a death sentence for her, and he had a new duty to ferry those lost souls unlike what Davy Jones had been doing.

The first three films tell a well told action adventure story. At World's End was a nice way to close things off. But the next movies kind of basically ruin what came before. The forth movie was supposed to be the start of a new trilogy that never came. It could have worked as a Epilogue if they managed to write the Forth film better but again end it on cliffhangers that doesn't really get resolved in the way you think it will and the Fifth is just garbage. It completely destroys the entire characterization of Jack Sparrow. Like the character in the fifth film does not feel or act like the character from the four previous movies in any way except for one sequence that is also a big retcon to what was told in the second film so...yeh. Forth film, not the best but not the worst either and is still somewhat fun and creative. Fifth is just a giant middle finger to the franchise as a whole. I like to pretend the Fifth one never happened. Like there's too many plotholes and retcons in that, that it makes no sense even for this over the top supernatural pirates franchise.

Couldn’t agree more. The first three are untouchable. The fourth one I actually like a bit, or at least the first 20 or 30 minutes. I feel like it drops off after the Mermaid capture and then they’re just trekking through jungle for a good chunk of the movie. But it picks back up again when Jack and Barbossa team up. Overall it’s decent, but for whatever reason they didn’t follow up on the end credit scene or a couple of other things. And I couldn’t agree more about the fifth, it just breaks so many rules and previously established moments and things that it’s genuinely infuriating. And Jack is absolutely terrible except for the flashback scene.

The maelstrom battle is iconic, simply because it's a thing that's only in this movie. Every pirate movie has a ship battle. Every movie or show with swords has swordplay. But Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is the only movie in the world with a maelstrom ship fight, sword fight, all the fights. The writers of these movies really know how to relay things to the audience, in a way that's show don't tell, and how to use Chekov's gun. Jack's cool trick to get away from Beckett? Used to get away from Jones, which is then used again to get away from the sinking ship. The trilogy is incredible. Really lightning in a bottle that even if Johnny were to return as Sparrow, it would never be replicated again.

The reason there wasn't a big naval fight between the rest of the ships is because of the Flying Dutchman... it is not touched in the movie (as far as I remember), but I believe the myth also goes that the ship can't be sink/destroyed completely, or at all. It always comes back. This is reinforced in the movie by the fact that the Flying Dutchman went down into a maelstorm where no ship can survive, and it almost instantly just poped back up like nothing happened. Now I assume all the other captains of the ships had someone to look through the spyglass and report on the battle. And if you see a ship that literally got shot with canonfire and go down in a maelstorm and come back, ofcourse everybody else would just dip. In short, it came down on whose side was the Flying Dutchman. It would be good for the side it was on, but spell certain doom for the other side. Therefore no big naval battle, as the Flying Dutchman could sink all the ships around there.

Love the video as always! This one is definitely my favorite of the series. The more I watch, the more I love it. I recently picked up on some of the subtleties in the acting. Like how Barbossa has kind of become a mentor sort of to Elizabeth since the second movie. You can see this in the way she reacts to him speaking at the Pirate Lord Council, and then how she takes and uses some of his wording when she addresses the pearl before the final battle. If Disney felt they HAD to do a PotC movie without Depp, the only thing I would accept is a "mid-quel" movie between 2 and 3 that fleshes out the gang leading up to the Singapore heist. But since the OG cast would never do that- let alone, without Johnny Depp, I would prefer they tell a whole new pirate story and not do any more to pull down on the PotC legacy with Jack and Will and Elizabeth and Barbossa etc.

I hope this doesn't come off as controversial but if Gore Verbinski didn't do the original trilogy then this series would not be the same. I wish that he got more to do in his career since Pirates is probably the only thing is known for. To this day I think the original Pirates trilogy is one of the more under rated trilogies... Not saying every film meets up to every standard but they are damn enjoyable. Love the first movie, second is just ok, and the third is very underappreciated for how much it expanded the world and the lore of this universe and I love that movie. Some of the best music in cinema history for sure, and the character of Jack Sparrow is of course one of the more iconic characters you can't do it without Johnny Depp.

For anybody who is always praising the first movie to be the best. I have been studying 1-3 and I constantly re-watch them. Pirates of the Caribbean does not go downhill in writing after the first movie. That is your business to believe that opinion everyone else goes with. Dead man’s chest gave the characters more depth! Elizabeth and William barely have anything to work with in the first movie. William’s relationship with his father that was hinted in the first movie of his father‘s existence. Paid off wonderfully. William’s character had way more in depth now and you have something to truly care about him for. You get both perspectives when you understand their Reunion! Bootstrap didn’t want Will to become a pirate like him, he wanted him to have a free life from the pirate life. William had a hard time accepting he was half Pirate but when he accepted his life and his father… He has a new journey to stab the heart of Davy Jones to set his father free. And you’re implying William is better in the first movie just because he wanted to save the girl he loved? William in the second movie now has Elizabeth as a lover. And now a new journey to rescue his father someone else he cares about. And this became a difficult situation when bootstrap told Elizabeth at world‘s end. William has to make a decision. Either don’t kill Davy Jones so he can be with you. Or he does kill Davy Jones and set me free, but he won’t be able to be on land for 10 years. If I were him I wouldn’t pick me! :/ The emotional weight on William’s character gets better and better. Elizabeth in the first movie was just a damsel in distress girl. She wasn’t useless in the first movie but you get the point. In the second movie, Elizabeth learned to wield a sword and she used it in the battle. She pulled a gun to Beckett‘s head.. went on her own journey to save will. She has grown a lot since the first movie who was just an innocent girl! Elizabeth got better as a character in 2 and 3! As for Jack sparrow. He does not become a joke at all in all 3 movies. Jack sparrow is at his best in the second movie and in the third movie. There was a moment in dead men’s chest… Where Jack didn’t know what he truly wanted so the compass couldn’t locate what he desired. So when Elizabeth went on her journey and then found Jack.. Jack used her for his advantage! He took advantage of Elizabeth’s feelings by telling her if you want to save Will you have to want to find the chest of Davy Jones! In order to get will back.. That’s why Jack gave her the compass. Jack knew if he couldn’t figure what he wanted out he was going to get it out of Elizabeth. Since Elizabeth now wants to find the chest of Davy Jones to save will. This gives Jack the huge opportunity to find the chest to stab the heart in it. But instead he wants to control DavyJones before killing him. Jack sparrow is not stupid! When will was trying to stab the heart towards the end of the second movie. Jack knows just because Davy Jones is dead, does not mean the Kraken will be stopped as well. And you’re telling me Jack is dumb after part 1?? As for Beckett. He was a well executed villain who uses dialogue and negotiation to control people. The Reason why Beckett didn’t fire his cannons at worlds end. Was because it would be totally out of his character to use weapons. Beckett uses certain words to get through people and how to control them behind the scenes. Beckett at the end of the movie had nothing left to negotiate with. Davy Jones was dead, Jack sparrow is alive and well. Will Turner is now the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. Beckett had literally nothing to use against on people. He was caught in shocked and he decided to die.. Anyways I could defend the Gore Verbinski’s Trilogy all night. His trilogy is an underrated trilogy. It had great character writing and amazing detail of its depth. Also Will vs Davy Jones!!! 😈😈😈 when Will challenging Davy Jones. Davy Jones asks him how do you know about the key? Will replies and says, that's NOT part of the game is it? 😏 You can STILL walk away!! 😏 As for pirates 4/5 they are not even Canon they are filler movies. The story ended at worlds end! ☠️

Lord Cutler Beckett's ship (the blue and yellow striped ship of the East India Trading Company) is named The Endeavour. The Interceptor, the light, fast ship that Jack and Will stole to pursue the Black Pearl in the first film, was destroyed by Barbossa's crew when they caught up to them after Jack and Will rescued Elizabeth from Isla de Muerta, in that brief moment where the ship that we think Will was still on blows up. The Endeavour is much more built to withstand a sea battle than the Interceptor was, but even it can't survive being outflanked as it was.

Holden, to answer your question about "what would happen if the cannons shot the chest with the heart in it??" I believe that if THAT were to happen, NO ONE would be captain of the Flying Dutchman. It would remain inactive until someone voluntarily cut out their heart and bound themselves to the ship. UNLESS, the CREW of the Flying themselves decided and CHOSE one of the shooters by cutting out his heart. To be completely honest Will didn't "exactly" have a fair choice. He barely had any strength left; we can literally still see that Jack guided Will's hand while stabbing the heart. Will didn't "choose" to do it; even though he WAS willing in order to save his father.

Bill Turner melding into the Dutchman when he talks to Elizabeth is tying back into the phrase they first said in the second movie and then repeated a few times in this one. "Part with the crew, part with the ship". After severing 10 years aboard the Dutchman a crew member becomes part of the ship, at least while Davy Jones is captain. If you remember in the second movie was a guy who stepped out of the wall and left his brain in the wall. Also Bill Turner has a lot more coral and barnacles on him in this movie than he did in the second. It also ties into the crews ability to walk through walls and appear anywhere on the ship, they are a part of the ship, so they can be anywhere on the ship.
