I think the Absolute point itself is that "Strange must lose that which he values the most". In our universe, he focused on his ego and success vs christine in this universe. So the absolute point for us would be to lose his hands, for this episode would be to lose Christine. The argument made here is that even if THIS Strange lost his hands, his ego wasn't inflated and his love and support from Christine might have let him endure the loss of his hands and not sent him on a quest to becomes Dr Strange. Unlike our Dr Strange, where his ego was so strong that even when Christine tried to support him, he wouldn't have it... THAT is why there are 2 different reasons for the absolute point, but the absolute point "goal" itself is absolute.

The "plot hole" of Christine's death being an absolute in this timeline but not any others. Isn't a plot hole, from my understanding, the time stone, can not create branches in the timeline, it can only go forward or back in time, it can make changes but those changes do not branch into another universe. The reason its an absolute is because the man who is trying to change it, wouldn't be able to chance it because he wouldn't be trying to change it if it never happened, it's the universes self defence to stop paradoxes from occurring, which is why when she is brought back, the universe (not the world) calapses in on itself
@StarkRG3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, it's a pivot point. You can change the angle of a lever pretty easily, but the closer you get to its pivot point the harder that is until, right at the pivot point, it's impossible and if you pull too hard on it you'll just pull the whole thing apart. Different timelines will have different pivot points.
@folded93053 жыл бұрын
I’m so glad someone understands this! And saw that the time stone didn’t branch time! To add to this I think the time stone is able to jump timelines too! Dr. Strange viewed multiple timelines with it in infinity war. And the ancient one said “I’m a projection through a tear in your reality” to me the ancient one (like kang) communicates with herself in different timelines and the one we see as an “echo” in the episode of what if could be an ancient one from a different timeline just passing by letting him know what path he should be on. Anyways tho, if strange could use the time stone to jump timelines, the evil strange at the end still had the time stone….I think the strange we see in no way home trailer is evil strange jumping timelines becoming a multiversal being and he’s gonna eventually be the mcus version of mephisto, trying to gain enough power to fix the universe be destoryed. But that’s just a theory, a film theory
@markc40083 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's the... not a problem but the flaw in the What If...? titles - although they give a good idea of what the episode is about, it doesn't always tell you what the changing moment is. It did in episodes one and two - Peggy chose to stay, and Yondu outsourced capturing Ego's child - but they didn't do it for episodes 3 and 4 - with episode 3's changing moment being Hope joining SHIELD, and episode 4's being Christine going against 'The Strange Policy' and saying yes to going to the event with Stephen.
@mavvynne4443 жыл бұрын
The time stone not only works on forward or rewinding time, but it also can stop time, create time loop, time zone, anything that relates to time itself. The power of time stone is still limited tho cuz it needs other infinity stones to greatly boost its power to the next level

What I love about this episode is that we never actually truly see the point in which this universe diverged from the main MCU timeline. Genius.
@RaixsOreh3 жыл бұрын
the diverging point was either: Strange and Christine didn't end they're relationship prior to the time of the first Dr. Strange film, or they split up in friendlier terms enough that Christine was open to joining him. the reason she didn't go with him in the first Dr. Strange film was because they weren't together anymore at that point and she was kinda fed up from his arrogance.

The reason why Christine's death is an absolute point in time in this alternate reality is because personality-wise Strange is different from his main timeline counterpart. This Strange wasnt shown to be egotistical proud character, he's more sensitive and romantic. That change in personality changes his motivations and his paths. So the death of Christine is a change that would force him to learn mystic arts and eventually end Dormammu's attack. EDIT: *So the real **_"What If...?"_** here is **_"What if Stephen Strange is different personality-wise."_*

Pretty sure the difference between 'our' universe and this one is the fact that Strange values Christine more than his own career. In both universes he lost that which mattered most, in ours, his ability to perform and be the best surgeon there is, in this it is Christine. Whatever he loses becomes his Absolute Point, his motivation to seek out the mystic arts, become the sorcerer supreme and defeat Dormammu. Perhaps, in this particular Universe Strange loved Christine more so she was the absolute point. Where as in the main timeline it was Stevens skill or rather himself. I feel his pain! cause I had a car named Christine, and...oh wait.

Honestly this episode was absolutely amazing, i’m also really glad they went along with the tragedy ending, it creates a whole new perspective of depth and danger to these scenarios. It is definitely a positive to know What If will be returning with more episodes and a second season, this is great! PS: I hope some of the things shown here could make their way to our own universe in the upcoming movies regarding the multiverse, would love to see Hayley Atwell return as Captain Carter in live action

In my opinion, the most tragic moment is when he let her drive, saying she was all that mattered, essentially hoping he was the one that died in her place.

This episode was so emotional. I got serious shadow of the colossus vibes the whole time. Amazing episode And yup the watcher is showing us all these what if’s because these characters will all come together to stop something bigger In our universe the absolute point in time is his hand injury.

Agreed with Jen, this is definitely my favourite episode too. It really had an Infinity War-type ending, where it's all up in the air.... such a dark and intense episode.

This ending is a rare one, as it actually plays out like it should, the most probable outcome. Movies have a habit of underdogs winning, odds being beat, good triumphing no matter how outmatched.

The fixed point being her death is because it was the catalyst for him becoming Sorcerer Supreme. In our MCU Universe the catalyst was injury to his hands. Either way it is the loss of whatever is most important to that version of Dr. Strange. Our MCU Strange values his career the most, and in that Universe he valued his love for Christine, or his personal life... That's what I was imagining at least.
@MasterZeus943 жыл бұрын
Couple of things I've noticed: 1) What Dark!Strange was doing, the dark magic absorption thing, was very similar to what Agatha Harkness was doing to gain power and keep herself ageless. This is also funny because in the comics Strange does make deals and bargains with mystic beings for power. 2) O-Bengh in the comics is one of the names used by Cagliostro, the mentioned pioneer of time magic. So technically Strange did meet him. 3) Wong's big protection spell mentioned the Vishanti who in the comics is a trinity of mystic beings (one of them being Agamotto, creator of the Eye) and the primary source of Strange's magic.

They cut the scene in this reaction where the Watcher was noticed, remember it takes an insane amount of power to notice a being of his level when he's not wanting to be seen.

I think him crushing his hands was an absolute point in the main timeline, because if that didn't happen he wouldn't become Sorcerer Supreme and wouldn't defeat Dormammu, so if he went back in time to prevent that from happening he creates the same paradox that happened here.

In our universe it’s his hands that become an absolute point in time. If he wants to go back and fix his hands he wouldn’t be able too.

Its an absolute point because it was the event that lead to him seeking the mystic arts. without it he would never become sorcerer and have the power to go back in time in the first place, he would be creating a grandfather paradox to change that event. In the mcu his absolute point is losing his hands.

You made the "Time Machine" comparison and what I HATE about that movie is that Guy Pearce gives up after his first try (from what I remember). At least in this episode they show Strange trying a number of things to save Christine (whenever I thought of something they showed it, which I loved). It is interesting to think that the only thing he didn't try (or that was shown) was breaking up with her.

I haven't watched this series but I lobe me some Dr. Strange and this is was very powerful. I'm not a big fan of those going back in time only to find out you can't change the outcome but to see it taken in the direction it was...I mean I truly understand being glued to the episode. And like you said...not quite used to the heroes losing part but definitely glad to see the different takes on it. I lobe things that are so unpredictable and I agree...they can do so much with just Dr. Strange alone. Truly enjoy the take y'all have on these movies/shows

Interesting fact: A.C Bradley, who was the writer for epsiode 4 of What If, was initially scared of this story due to heavy flaws and tragedy, or if it was a really dark and emotional episode. But she found it as a very rewarding experience, and that the people really love the dark Dr. Strange episode

Using a variation of the technique that the Ancient One had used, a temporal duplicate could had been used to create a clone of Christine. Strange actually used this technique already multiple times in his movie as well as in Infinity War. Also another technique is to save her spiritual essence and revive her dead body then put her spirit back in it. She died, that's irrevocable fixed point in time, it doesn't that she had to stay dead or another copy of her had lived.

In that universe, it's an absolute point in time because it's the catalyst that gives Strange the ability to time travel. If she doesn't die, then he would never gain the power to save her. It's a paradox. So as I see it, the "fixed point" is in relation to Dr. Strange, not necessarily the universe as a whole.

Hey, Holden and Jen! Different universes have different Absolute Points. It depends on what the variant treasures most to compel his obsessive quest. In our universe, it was his hands. In this universe, it was Christine. In other universes, it could be his car, dog, medical license, ability to walk, his sight, etc. The darkest chapter yet! The point of divergence occurred at some point during the relationship between Christine Palmer and Stephen Strange because, in this universe, they are a romantic couple rather than amicable, flirtatious exes. This causes her to be a passenger on the fateful car ride to the awards ceremony that robs the doctor of what is most precious to him. However, in this universe, the most precious thing to Strange are not his hands but Christine. The title is a metaphor. Everyone from the films returns to voice their character including Leslie Bibb, the ambitious journalist from the "Iron Man" movies, Christine Everhart, as a news reader reporting on a deadly apartment fire. New character, O-Bengh, which is an alias of Marvel's Cagliostro, is voiced by Ike Amadi. In 2018, prior to Thanos' attack, Strange uses the Time Stone to change Christine's fate in 2016 but learns it is an Absolute Point in time. Apparently, the universe requires him to become the Sorcerer Supreme meaning that the destruction of his hands in our universe is its Absolute Point in order to yield the same outcome. After multiple iterations of Christine's death, the Ancient One appears in 2016 which is prior to her first meeting with the man although this is the time-traveling Strange from 2018. She attempts to dissuade a distraught Strange from his present course. He refuses to comply and disappears but not before the Ancient One splits him in half so that his half-self in 2018 abandons the notion of meddling with fate and joins Wong for tea. Meanwhile, the time-traveling half of Strange finds himself in a primeval jungle outside an ancient temple that houses the library of Cagliostro. Its caretaker, O-Bengh, guides Strange inside. O-Bengh has heterochromatic eyes and is most certainly Cagliostro himself. Cagliostro, in our history, was an 18th-century alchemist and astrologer who entertained the courts of Europe. In Marvel Comics, Cagliostro is a real sorcerer of tremendous power and long life who taught several magic-users and possessed the Darkhold for a time. He went by the alias O-Bengh. Strange spends centuries absorbing extradimensional beings including a portion of Shuma-Gorath to amass enough power to alter an Absolute Point. At one point, he senses a disapproving Uatu. When he is done, O-Bengh dies of old age revealing to Strange that he is only half a man and cannot succeed. The Ancient One sends a psychic echo of herself beyond the point of her death in 2017 to the half-Strange of 2018 to inform him of his role in the universal collapse and the threat of his other self. He and a dissolving Wong cast protective runes on Strange's face before he is snatched to 2016 by his dark half. The Stranges battle, the Cloak of Levitation is shredded and the protective runes are swept away! The two halves merge and Christine is restored to a demonic Strange as the universe collapses. Strange shelters the two of them in a pocket mirror dimension and sees Uatu! He beseeches the Watcher for aid! Uatu condemns Strange for not heeding his warning and those of Wong, the Ancient One and O-Bengh leaving him to his fate as Christine dissolves away. Trapped in his mirrored prison, Strange is all that remains of his universe. A crucial chapter of "What If...?" as Dark Strange will be seen again in this series and is possibly the Strange variant in "Spider-Man: No Way Home"! Also, what became of Mordo in this universe? His disillusionment with sorcerers was certainly borne out with this Strange!

The one thing that was different in this timeline that caused the chain of events was Steven and Christine stayed together, which is really sad to know that no matter what they couldn’t be together or else it ultimately ended with the end of the world.
