Joan is a true legend. She is an incredible songwriter. From day one she was always in control of her career. She produces her own music and writes it all too. She is amazing live!! She also totally broke the mould for black women artists in the UK!! AND she was one of the very first artists to come out as a lesbian publicly. Her record company dropped her instantly but her fan base supported her. A great artist and a role model!!!

Joan Armatrading has a song called “The Shouting Stage”. It’s from a 1988 album of the same name and is such a beautiful song with Mark Knopfler (from Dire Straits) on guitar. After that there’s nothing left but to separate.

So glad you covered Joan - she's one of the all-time greats and was _huge_ here in the UK in the late 1970s and 1980s. Her song "Me, Myself, I" got me through some pretty dark teenage times, let me tell you. I remember, she put out an album called "The Key" which had a drawing of her on the front with a key on a chain round her neck, and the first 1000(?) LPs had an actual key laminated to the front cover (any of those that still have the key on them have got to be hella collectable now!). She was being interviewed on BBC Radio 1 about it, and the DJ asked her where the album title came from. Joan said that her manager noticed that she always wore a key on a chain around her neck, and she pulled out the key to show her. The DJ trying to be all arty-farty said something like, "Oh wow, so what is the key then? Is it the key to your heart?" Joan (I imagine) gave her an old-fashioned look, and said, matter of factly, "Nah, it's the key to my front door..." 🤣
