The clunk sounded like the ABS system.....I imagine you would have felt something through the pedals and/or the steering wheel if that clunk was mechanical and in the ABS system, or the steering system...but you didn't mention feeling anything. Your face definitely showed that SOMETHING changed in the car right at the moment of that sound.

When a component fails due to fadigue it leaves a signature in the metal that diferes from the impact one for instance, and this is how engineers can tell the cause of accidents, being it in aeronautics, motorsport or any other area. Exactly because of that, in the Ayrton Senna case, was proved in court that the steer column failed due to fadigue. Happens that there is a lot of noise and misinformation, specially because it involves big teams, big engineers and figures, but there is no doubt about what caused the accident.

Have my doubts with something mechanical. Cos the ABS kicking into snow mode is a known issue in the gt86, and gr86 is using similar parts. I had that occur, and that sound is the abs pushing back. Had the same sound of a clunk prior. Commented on prior video too. Do use pedal dance mode for track use.
@kevindoran4336
@kevindoran4336 10 ай бұрын
Andrea is a very experienced mechanic, GR86 owner and Nordschleife driver, he can clearly see no mechanical failure! The ball joint & wishbone, shock and tie rod could clearly be seen still attached on the underbody video. Stripped out cars make clunking noises in compressions as the chassis flexes, especially with uprated rear arms and stiffer bushes/suspension/tyres, the loads have to go somewhere. Put an interior back in it dampens these sounds. It’s also not ABS that gets activated there, it’s ESP, when a driver gets it crossed up has the steering on full lock but the G sensors are detecting push (understeer) it steps in, the same ESP that saved Misha at Schwedenkreuz in the wet. Some times, you just have to own it.

Very glad you and your passenger are not suffering from any injuries, first of all. That said, as a long-time subscriber who had some racing in my past (early in life - I'm old now), I had been noticing in the last couple months or so that Misha seemed to be pushing the cars a little harder than ever before. Now, some of that comes with additional experience of course - but there seemed to be a harder edge to his recent laps, including some nervous moments on-track with "interesting" passing choices and such. It may just be me, but it was noticeable and it made me concerned for him... Glad to see him get right back on the horse, though. That's a good thing too! - Ed on the Ridge

I agree that Misha been pushing it more than usual I put it down to youthful exuberance( which we all do az young bucks involved in Motor racing) BUT experience teaches you afew things... 1_ always make sure your car is properly prepped & Fit for purpose. 2_ don't let "familiarity" with the car, the track, or fellow competitors allow complacency to creep in. There's No doubt young Misha has driving talent which is growing with experience. But just be aware of getting too comfortable &complacent. That's when the unexpected can catch you by surprise!

@@SkylineLofe You're right. I now live in Canada and tend to forget that some models aren't available in Europe and vice versa. Right now, I'm looking at stiffening the chassis with Cusco braces and a Rotora 6/4 big brake kit. Suspension seems to be tricky here in the Winter Belt, though. It looks like all the salt sprayed on the road tends to make the coilovers get stuck. For the time being, I'm just protuning the car after installing a new turbokit and FMIC. Patience, time and money...
@dlombana161

Honestly I’d focus on tracking the car first to get a good baseline for a season or two with just better tires/wheels and pads/fluids. You have quite a few mods planned but a bigger turbo and tuning tend to bring a whole new slew of variables for reliability on track for forced induction cars in general.

@@dlombana161 Chassis rigidity seems to be a big deal actually, even before suspension upgrade. If I don't take care of it from the get go, I may put some undue stress onto the chassis. To meet you half way. I'd say that I could have started with the brake kit, tires and chassis before the turbokit and FMIC. I simply couldn't resist the fun factor of deeper exhaust sound once a catback meets a J pipe😆

Hi Misha! First of all: thanks god that you and Joe are safe! I cannot imagine the world without your contents!😮😊 Second: the tie bar inspection looks me quite suspicious! Normally that parts get first bended as a designed failing method (I would have also expected it as you impacted at moderate speed), their crack section is also at the outside joint housing! Thus it's strange for me that the bar looks fine on the outside but the rack can be shaken on that way. I don't think the inner joint is failed too (but possible)...that should be much more massive than the outer one, but take a look at the overall steering! Tie bar fixation thread to the rack, yoke (support and fixation part between rack and pinion)...unfortunatelly the mondern steering systems don't really like NOS missions as durability test! It's not a bet and win contest but the clunk could come from the steering itself! Keep going and fly safe longer! Cheers Marton

Hmmm the Lock ring on the coilover spring was loose like that. Then my hypothesis would be, that you lost spring tension on that corner. Causing an unbalanced suspension system by the 3rd lap. My Racing Spec buddyclubs taught me that the hard way. I now put zipp ties to keep an extra safety lock.

I'd have a look at the rear left lower link to see if there are scrapes on the underside. The inboard rose joint failed downwards in bending by the looks of things, if it was from impact I would expect it to look more like a compressive failure. If it was what failed I would expect there to be road rash on the underside, versus it being snapped during impact where there would likely only be grass and dirt on it. Good luck with the repairs!

You bring up a good point about ABS. Something could have failed in the system that caused the wheels to lock up. As for the noise, if you ever driven on snow/ice, the ABS does tend to make quite loud "clunking" sounds when it engages or disengages.

Misha, what truly matters is that you weren’t injured and the car can be repaired, from what we know it sounds to me as a steering rack tie rod failure. @ziggggy53ify
@ziggggy53ify 10 ай бұрын
I trained as a mechanical engineer. Looking at the video and listening to your description, I suspect that three things happened to stress and break the front-end components, before you struck the guard-rail of the track. 1) You applied the brakes which put normal stresses on the car. Nothing broken at this point. 2) There was a change in the track surface which caused the front tires to lose traction, almost completely. You countered the steering angle to compensate for the slide, as you should. 3) ABS took over and the front wheels free-wheeled until the car hit dry pavement again, ABS engaged the brakes again and the car instantly went from unstressed to highly stressed and the wheels were still cocked, so the steering components were instantly highly stressed, the car pitched down and something snapped under the strain, resulting in the "pop" sound. This would be similar stresses to a city street with losing traction and hitting a curb with the tire/wheel and snapping a steering component. _ Now you lose steering control because of the broken component(s) and you wisely let go of the steering wheel so the impact with the guard-rail doesn't snap your wrist. Trust me, if all of this had happened on a tighter turn, the car damage would have been much worse.

Glad your well Misha! I don't think it's abs going into ice mode because you would have just lost braking. I wonder if anyone had video of the crash from outside just so you could have seen what direction the wheels were facing. That would help figure out some of the mystery. My money is on liquid on the track or maybe that clunk was the tie rod breaking off. Could also be the pillowballs were badly worn on the coilovers and they welded themselves to the strut tower mount. When the fronts pillowballs go, you can potentially loose some steering angle before the wheels actually turn. Basically instead of the coilover rotating where the pillowball is, it'll rotate the shock itself. (it will make a clunking noise like that since the coil spring itself rotates) That lower coilover lock being loose might also be evidence of that. (I'd check for wear on the upper lock where the spring sits on) Anyway, glad you and the passenger are doing good dude! You are by far my favorite dude on YT

Regarding Senna, there's a video on the web supporting the thesis that he went straight on because the track was patched midway through the corner (you can see the black patch). When he hit the black patch the front lifted from the ground and he went straight on due to lack of grip. You can see in the video that the wheels keep the same angle throughtout the corner, so it was hardly a broken steering. One of the things that were changed after that crash was that repairs to the track can't be done like that anymore.

3:13 that was very unexpected, Renault Brembo calipers on a GR86? I'm not even close to a mechanic, but looking at the crash video again, there was defiantly some kind of a fluid on the road, you could even see the Porsche avoid it. And I believe the the clunk that we heard is some kind of a mechanical part from the other vehicle, and only one tire was fighting for grip, which was the outside front tire, the inside one was directly on the fluid with 0 traction basically, only because the tire squeal wasn't that loud, and doesn't sound like 2 tires, more like one. Keep it safe Misha, we want you good for a lot more videos to come! 💪

Inner tie rod snapping like that on the steering rack side and without any sings of bending, I hope you give that a second look when the car is on the lift. Usually as a result of a crash they will snap on the threads connecting it to outer rod where it is the weakest, and if it did fail prior to the impact car would want to push straight just like it did, so really want to see that explored further.

I'm pretty sure it's ABS related, it could be a dirty wheel sensor (rocks will block it), last time it happened to me all of the brake pressure went to only one wheel, I got so many other events with ABS malfunctions in this car, that's why I plan on removing the ABS pump unit completely, there are aftermarket solutions.

Many years ago I've build for myself trackday car using Civic 4gen base (ED6). It had d16 supercharged engine (240HP) and 928kg weight (measured with half tank empty). With mods like metal plate lsd, quaife steering rack, brakes, suspension + few more it was very competitive track weapon. I raced for three full seasons with this car on highest speed tracks available in my country. Pros: weight, perfect wheelbase, double wishbones F+R, visibility inside, easy to drive on the limit. Cons: bit soft chassis, reinforcements highly welcome. I could even go lower with car weight (8XXkg was in reach) but I was driving to trackdays on wheels so didn't want go beyond some point (like plexi windows, fiber doors and so on). If you want, I can share more of my personal experiences from that build.

Senna's car was too low, and hit the ground multiple times, porpoising. I saw a long investigation video about it couple of years ago. It happened with other cars too on the same weekend, but not all of them ended in tragedy. (this can be one of the reasons parts broken on it)

Thank you Misha, stay cool and smart, you're living your dreams, that's wonderful, but it comes at a price. You are serious enough and dedicated to everything that you have a bunch of us fans who sincerely support you (I especially like the part about replacing the risky aluminum part on the car for the safety of the future owner) and the fact that I know that this car will be much better after the "repair" than he ever was... God bless you and we will follow you... Thank you comrade

You should be able to tell if the steering rack was broken in tension or impact by looking at the metal grain structure at the break. If there's stretching it was likely your clunk, and caused the accident. If it is "squished" then the break was likely from impact.

Just looking at that Cusco trailing arm in the rear and using basic engineering principles should give a pretty good idea of what happened. Under high load cornering, the shock compression load and the ARB link load combined cause a large bending moment about that road end that connects to the subframe. Rod ends are NOT good for bending loads. They are made for tension and compression load NOT bending loads. Combine that with the relatively small diameter of the rod end and you’re just asking for a failure to occur. You probably have enough data from your onboard footage to get a rough estimate of the actual bending stress on that rod end. My engineering gut says that if you did the math you’d see why the failure occurred.

I’m sure the part is a very well made part but that doesn’t mean it is a well engineered part. And I’m also sure that for the vast majority of people this would never happen. But I think in these specific conditions with the car being driven hard lap after lap on the ring and that corner being a downhill right hand corner it was just enough to cause the rod end to fail.

Interesting to me is that car went in understeer after the braking was finished, you were already on slight gas. This shows to me that you weren’t too fast or braked too late, otherwise you wouldn’t have released braking. Regarding the clunk, I was wondering if it wasn’t simply the noise from abs (unsure about how it would be captured by the cam system). Anyway. Cannot wait to see the Honda :-)

Morizo a.k.a. Akio Toyoda was here in the Ph a week ago and being a CEO of the company, I truly admire his passion not just for driving the cars they've built, but also he himself race the cars and push them to their limits. I hope he sees this and maybe able to help you out to expedite the parts that you need for this project. Pretty sure he'll be grateful to know you're driving the car the way it was meant to be driven.

Hi Misha Charoudin, try to connect it to the ECU, maybe there to see what happened, because the ECU has to show an error if something happened, try it, and I'm complaining that it's to the steering wheel bar or to the brake system, try to find out what happened to the car, because according to in the video it's strange that the car has no brakes and can't turn. Greetings from Croatia. I watch your videos. They're always fast. Just be careful. Greetings from Zagreb.

the ball joint on the steering jack is a good suspect. The strange thing is the ABS coming on right before the crash, its like one of the rotors blocked or something (abs sensor failed ? )must see if the sensor didn't touch the teeth ...

Just a thought, since everyone is saying they heard a clunk… if there was some form of liquid on the track and the tires had no traction, the brakes would stop the wheels near enough instantly wouldn’t they despite the tires still slipping across the track? The clunk may have been the sudden stopping of the wheels with the loss of traction? If you have a car up in the air (no traction) and the wheels are spinning quickly, the force from the brakes, alongside the abscense of traction causes them to stop straight away (possibly causing a clunk from suspension at those high speeds)

Seeing ya build an old Civic would be cool! 3rd and 4th gen Civics look somewhat similar, and there's so many variations really, hatchbacks, sedans, wagons, in fact the 4th gen ones have a wagon version you get with AWD, if ya wanted to go silly, seen some use those for either offroading or dragracing :P But those old boxy Civics would be cool, be it a K24 swap, K20, or swap a vetec head onto the stock engine as a lot of those have the D15, which you can fit some of the vtec heads on, maybe as a in between while waiting for an engine or something, or if ya can't be bothered to do a swap. :P (This also works with the EG Civic as a lot of them were sold with the D15) Or maybe just go completely off the rails and import a G20 or G25 engine, either from Japan from the Honda Vigor, or in the US, the Acura Vigor, they're Honda made 5 cylinder engines. :P Weird tangent aside, the ABS bit is sounding likely as well, as people did comment on the hazards having turned on as ya braked entering the corner, and if brakes didn't work... well, I doubt a faulty suspension bit would take out the brakes? Unless it'd mess with the ABS sensor?
