After many years I have finally found mu wholy grain routine! I use the ordinary Aha toner and niacinamide+zonc serum at night, followed by a simple Avene moisturizer plus tretinoin every other night. Then in the morning the ordinary vitamic c liquid serum+ moisturizer + sunscreen spf 50. My skin has never been better! Im amazed! I have tried so many other products (including the ordinary ) but they were all either bad or expensive ( or both) im a new person now! So happy! P.s. i have acne prone skin and nasty melasma plus first signs of aging in my early thirties. Hope this helps anyone xxx

Could you please do a video on the benefits of essential oils, as these are so hyped on youtube. Such as Rosehip Oils, Squalene oil, Marula oil, Emu oil, and Cocunt oil.
@MargueriteLoiselle
@MargueriteLoiselle 6 жыл бұрын
goldier markowitz Those oils you mentioned aren’t essential oils, but are great oils to apply for added moisture! I have dehydrated, acne prone skin and oils have helped hydrate and nourish my skin beautifully. Rosehip seed oil is one of the thicker ones and great for acne-prone skin. it helps nourish and soften acne scars as well. It’s high in linoleic acid whereas acne prone skin is low in linoleic acid so it can help balance that out. Rosehip seed oil can oxidize easily though so it should only be applied at nighttime, as your very last step, to seal in all your previous products. Oils are the thickest molecule so if you don’t apply them last, following products won’t be absorbed. Squalane is my favorite oil and one I think is suitable for any skin type. It doesn’t oxidize. Marula is great for skin and hair, also good for acne prone skin. I personally stay far away from coconut oil because it’s the fattiest oil and breaks me out , not good for oily acne prone skin. I don’t know anything about Emu oil. The Ordinary has all those oils at A reasonable price! Also, you shouldn’t apply oil in the AM because it can interfere with your SPF protection and can wear it away, so only apply an oil in the PM, as your very last step. Hope this helps! Xx!

Essential oils aren't very good for your skin. They are also called fragrant oils. But the oils you mention aren't essential oils, they are carrier oils. They have some nice benefits. Coconut oil is very likely to clog your pores though.

I’ve seen so many routines where 3+ products (not counting toner and moisturizer) are layered on top of each other rather quickly. I’ve always wondered if it really matters in what order you apply and how long you wait in between, etc. I always feel like I’m doing it wrong.

Dr. Sam, I do have a question. My morning routine is working very well. When I was almost 61 I started using Tretinoin, and now I'm 64+. I started slowly, and had great results. For 2 1/2 years Tretinoin was the only thing I put on my skin at night. Now I use Matrixyl 3000 also. Should I apply the Matrixyl 3000 before, or after the Tretinoin? I've done it both ways, but wanted your opinion. I use Tretinoin 2 nights on, one night off. On one of the nights off, I use Lactic acid. Thank you. Blessings..MaryEllen
@MargueriteLoiselle
@MargueriteLoiselle 6 жыл бұрын
MaryEllen After 60 you really shouldn’t apply anything before the tretinoin, because it will dilute it, but if you find the tretinoin to be too harsh or drying for your skin, then I’d suggest to apply the matrixyl first and that will help tone it down. You want the tretinoin to do its 100% best job, so your best bet is applying that right after your wash and tone. If you want the matrixyl as an added boost of moisturizer, then apply it after the tretinoin is done drying, and then proceed with your moisturizer.

Hi, I recommend doing the Matrixyl in the mornings after apply Vitamin C serum. Tretinoin works best with a heavy-duty moisturizer (I use Avene's rich moisturizing cream) afterward to prevent drying of the skin and adverse reactions, so it gets absorbed and not "washed off".

Hi, I am almost 55 and have been caring for my skin since I was in my 20s. I am always complimented on my skin. I don't use foundation, only SPF (partial to Australian Gold). I totally agree that layering your skincare is very important based on skin type. Even based on skin type, if a person (such as myself) has extremely sensitive skin and an autoimmune disorder (psoriasis), I think one should follow what works on your skin. Hydration, more than anything, is key. I do use eye cream because my undereye gets noticeably more wrinkly without it. I use Retin-A (Rx retinoid) every night, Timeless Vitamin-C serum in the mornings which is 10x less-costly than SkinCeuticals'. On my T-zone I use a different system for oily skin. One amazing You Tube channel is Hot & Flashy - she is a skin care legend.

Can I use more than one toner? For instance, I love 'Breath of Fresh Air' from Lush. I use it multiple times a day, just for a quick refresh. In my mind, the rose water, aloe, and different herbs are great for calming and moisturising. I also just started using Solution from Glossier for small closed comedones on my chin and also to clear up blackheads. It contains 10% AHA,BHA, and PHA, as well as salicylic acid. I normally have quite dry skin on the outer parts of my face, but I have been using this daily, as suggested, for about two days and haven't noticed any irritation yet. Hoping to know what your insight is.

Dr. Sam, My question is hormonal acne related and how to layer skincare with Retin-A. I have started using Tretinoin 0.025% to treat mild acne and anti wrinkling benefits. I am 55 years old. Can I continue to use BHA and BPO at night with the Retin-A. Should I use other anti acne skincare at night with the Retin-A to treat acne or just use those products in the AM. Thank you in advance for your comment.

Hi Dr Sam, I have oily/comb skin, dehydrated sometimes, and age spots. You always speak of Skinsceuticals C E Ferulic (for dry, sensitive, normal skin stated on the label), but never of their Phloretin CF which my derm recommends for my skin type. Wouldn’t you use this since you too have oily skin? Or do you prefer the former since it has 15% L-ascorbic vs the latter at only 10%? Is the 5% difference big enough to minimize age spots? Yes, I would love to see your PM time routine. Thx.

Hi Dr, my question is don't you recommend to use a toner or essence right after cleansing the skin? Before the Vit C, that is? If not, I'd like to understand why. I'm an esthetician in the US and I was taught that you always should use a toner after cleansing as it helps to balance the pH. Thanks!
@ninjaturtles12121
@ninjaturtles12121 6 жыл бұрын
Nelly Weeks that is old school as now a days no one is cleaning using a bar soap those are very alkaline and therefore u needed to adjust pH after. But now we cleanse using sophisticated cleaners with low phs so we no longer need any adjusting. Also toners usually have horrible alcohols or astringent so skipping that will do wonders. There are some fab toners like Paula's choice toners that soften the skin and add tons of antioxidants so my vit c better absorbs n that's the only reason I use one now

@ninjaturtles12121

Paris Sinclair never too early to start anti aging. Earlier you start more prevention. Very hard to erase wrinkles once they come on easier to prevent them. So bha/aha will do wonders to anyone's skin. 21 and over is great time to start retinol as well as long as your lifestyle is conducive. I would go to lots of music festivals and outdoor events and couldn't keep up with sunscreen application so I would never start acids or retinol if that is the case. Also by the time we are 18 we have already accumulated all the horrid sun damage so early 20s we should actively start trying to reverse some of it before we start seeing the effects appear mid to late 20s. Again I would stress start off with spf greater than 30 365 days rain or shine and if your lifestyle allows for less sun exposure then def look into aha/bha and retionol.

Paris Sinclair Depends of the condition of your skin. Usually it's recommended using startung retonoids by age 30, or 25 in acne prone skin. If you spend a lot if time indoors, sunscreen and vitamin c will do until 30 ;) Aha you can start now!

Do fine lines (created very recently) appear any less with the use of retinoids? Also, would you recommend using retinoid eye creams? Love from Greece. xxx's

I have Skinmedica’s TNS. Does it go before retinoid or after? It’s expensive and so is the retinoid so I don’t want to cancel either out by having the wrong order. Thanks you! ( mature normal skin).

Hi Suzanne! I also have Skinmedica's TNS, my dermatologist said the TNS should go first because it contains growth factors and those should go closest to the skin. Then follow up with your retinoid. Hope that helps.

Really useful understanding the priority of incorporating actives, and thank you for confirming that acids aren't necessary every day (my skin does better with once/twice weekly usage!). I'd love for you to do a video on how much time you should leave between layering actives (if any), I've seen mixed advice about this...what does the evidence say? 💗

My skin just doesn't get on with vitamin c. I've tried many serums (skinceuticals, the ordinary, timeless, and cosrx) but all of them cause irritation and sometimes break outs. What would you suggest instead for morning use? I currently just use a hydrating serum, moisturizer, and SPF.
@roxemary
@roxemary 6 жыл бұрын
Start with low concentrations. The products I know from the brands you mentioned are too strong to start. Look for a product with around 5% vit c. As you have many products you can try to mix them up with moisturizer to dilute the vit c. Another strategy is to apply the product and cleanse 15 min after.

Lydia, maybe try Obagi professional vit c 5% if you can get hold of it. If you go slowly, small amount, introduce slowly it should be fine- I'm no expert but try and help going by my past experience x

In the video she said the goal is to work up to every single night. Start with the lowest dose and work your way up. It is a very long drawn out process, but the benefits are well worth it.

Lyssa Lucine Slow & steady wins the race otherwise you'll find yourself giving up due to red/flaky/peely skin. Start .025% just 1x week over a month, then add a 2nd day & see how it goes for awhile (couple months). If skin starts acting up, back down from wherever & stay there longer. Then try again over time. Goal is every night night for say a year before even thinking abut bumping up to the .050%
@sacuster1

it literally takes a good couple years or more to get to the highest percentage every night. My dermatologist has said I can mix a little moisturizer with it during the winter months if I get too dry. I do use a moisturizer with niacinamide which I didn't know would help with increasing the tolerance to RetinA. This was a great informative video.
