Thanks Mary and thanks Tim (loved the Beato interview about the vanishing middle class too ( used to have a montage print of wolf head sketches called “The Vanishing Wolf” where the sketches fade into the background and the yellow eyes are the part that's coloured in) but as the wolf is making a comeback- hopefully the Mexican wolf too (there is only one!!! )- so shall the middle class and all the other people that were part of the music industry.) By virtue of Rick’s video and one simple statement of Tims from the very beginning of your interview Mary, I have had a bit of an epiphany about practising and also begin to understand the importance of collaboration. I’ve been sitting at my piano pretending for years and once in a while I get something I like happening but I was often in a trance playing passively- slowly mostly pushing myself to see possible harmonies and how far I could go. I hope to say Little did I know, I was a ghost to myself until I discovered the idea of riffing all the time It might bring a more specific focus to the task of understanding harmony and finding my wings. I've been a perpetual wanderer through accidental harmony and find myself either doing repeated chords like in dime store ballads singing in the style of Paul McCartney - always on the look out for catchy lines (-I love singing- ) or I’ll play musical hinges one after the other (dramatic ones) and spaghetti Italian opera melodies made up on the spot. I think I'm going to do an additional thing from now on where I pick a key and practise riffs AND write them down so I can be a R E A D E R. . Sail on Mary! I am looking forward to watching yet another of your intriguing videos but actually I am going to run this pay dirt through the sluice a few times so I won't miss anything. Awesome! P.S. Thinking out loud... The fear of making a mistake lay hidden under the habit of sitting down to escape the world by pretending (it's actually kind of an act of diplomacy.) ...and being limited by constantly being on the search for something new and never stopping much to analyse. However, now I have mindful, energetic, purposeful riffing! What more could a person ask for?

Tim Pierce has been doing this forever, he has played with everyone, he knows all the technical jargon. Still, when he describes something, he uses simple words, simple analogies that everyone understands, including non musicians. I was in an up-and-coming Albuquerque band when Tim and Traveler were hitting their stride. (As an example. we were the second band up at a five band outdoor concert at Speedway Park...Traveler was the headliner.) We still have a lot of mutual friends, but were only acquaintances back then. He and his buddy Bobby Unser Jr. dropped by one of my band's rehearsals on night and Tim sat in with us on a Steely Dan song. Hearing Tim and our other guitarist nail the solos on Kid Charlemagne in unison is still one of the best moments in my musical career.

Tim is a legend! He is so down to earth and humble for one so accomplished - and what a talent! I love that he shares his knowledge and is trying to nurture the next generation of guitarists. He has some sound knowledge and understanding of the music industry, technology but doesn’t lose any of the creativity, which goes back to your video about being many things beyond being just a performer. The more I look, the more I believe those who are just creative and just play are actually in the minority. So many musicians these days are multi-talented or perhaps multi-disciplined is the better word because it’s not just about creativity. Thanks for another great video! 😃👍

Wow! In my band days doing the Tastee Concerts in Jamaica I used to complain about 27-30 songs with one rehearsal. The worst ones were the original songs that some contestants insist on singing. I think these "unsung heros" are now well known thanks to internet/you tube. I did not even know Jimmy Page and Steve Luckather were studio guitarists and had never heard of f.i. Tim Pierce or Larry Carlton. I was a fan of Jean Luc Ponty and Holdsworth in the 80's. I had one tape (enigmatic ocean) a friend copied from an album for me. He had bought the record abroad. My local music shop did not even know the names. I looked for years for an album of Luther Johnson recorded in the 70's in Paris. Found it in Paris in the early 90's. Now I can listen to everything they ever recorded on you-tube or spotify. I wish we had internet back then in the 70's-80's.
