You did it, you tamed the X! I've rarely seen Phil behave in such an emotional and mellow way, I was moved as well.
@WhoWouldWantThisName7 жыл бұрын
Actually this is how I think of him. He sometimes does that whole amped up, pun intended sorry, thing ala Fretted Americana when he's aware that there's a camera and people expect a performance or him to be entertaining. Once he get's into a conversation though he just settles into being himself. Possibly the most lovable, encouraging, inspiring, and just all around beautiful human being. Yup, I might be fan girl-ing, as Mary would say, but this is the real Phil X.
@OzziePete17 жыл бұрын
Been watching Phil X on video since the F.A. days and was very happy for him when he subbed for Richie originally. You look behind the hyped persona he portrays on screen/stage & you will see a guy who goes to Summer Camps in Canada & USA to do Rock Camps, who keeps in touch with guys from his hometown in Canada despite his schedule & who says "OK" to doing this GuitCon week straight after a South American tour with Bon Jovi. He loves his wife & kids, works very hard and knows the up & downs of the industry he works in.

Marty Friedman heard a guitar solo I did on a track with a band I was in around 1994. I went to see 'Kill To This' who supported Megadeth in Manchester and they were friends of ours at the time. The guy working the mixer for 'Kill To This' came to us and give me and the other guitar player in our band a bunch of Marty Friedman signature picks saying Marty had just listened to our track 'Level Head' and was saying WOW who played the guitar on that track! I was blown away he liked my solo and tracked guitars for the song. I should upload the song someday as my claim to fame...lol. Great interview Mary and it was a treat having the awesome and always entertaining Phil X for an interview. Great stuff:)

@@officialWWM - Uh, Marty Friedman is a really good guitar player. He is probably best known for his decade playing lead guitar for the Thrash-metal band Megadeath.

This is a wonderful interview. I never knew much about Phil X and had just seen his Fretted Americana videos. He comes across as kind of nutty in those but there is no denying his talent. He seemed a lot more subdued here and he is so interesting to listen to when he tells a story. Thanks for sharing.

brilliant, real interview. your reactions when Phil goes into the first solo is why playing guitar is so great and inspiring for all of us who do it - you can't replicate that feeling with anything else. I loved Phil X's FA series and really enjoy his playing. I just discovered your channel recently (Why it's so hard to play Why Georgia correctly) and since then I've been watching almost daily. Just wanted to say I love what you do. I subscribed immediately after watching you sing 'Primrose' while jamming with Lee on Anderton's TV. The video came up in my suggestions and I asked myself "Who is Mary Spender?". So I clicked and am very glad I did. Your technique and approach to playing from what I've seen in your videos is stellar and when you pair that with your voice, it's pure magic. Keep it up. I can't wait to hear more from you! The jam with Phil at the end of this video was great as well. Your reactions to his playing was pure "fangirl" yet you kept playing flawlessly. I certainly wouldn't have been able to!

My Band "NBTF" had the pleasure of opening up for Bon Jovi in May of 2018. Not only did we get to meet Bon Jovi but we also got to meet Phil X as well which was such an honor for me personally. I've been a huge fan of his videos ever since I started playing at the age of 12 (now almost 18). Him giving us advise right before we went on stage to perform in front of a crowd of thousands of people was absolutely mind blowing. Love your videos Mary! please do a US tour!!! I'd love to open up for you!!

A tasty jam to top off a sparkling video. I can't imagine how much fun Guitcon must have been. Hanging out with so many great guitarists and youtubers. That Cornell story resonates with so many of us because he left far too soon, like so many of our best and brightest. I don't know how, but we need to stop that from happening whenever we can. We need to keep talking about it until there's a solution.
