One of the first things you should do when arriving at a campsite is set up your shelter. Most of the time, I use a hammock. Here, I discuss the basics of setting up your hammock, and show a few different pieces of gear I use to make the hammock setup lighter and easier to put up.
A few tips and tricks you can use to make for a better, more comfortable "lay" in your hammock:
1. Place the "foot" end of your hammock 4 - 6 inches higher than the "head" end. This prevents you from sliding down in the middle of the night.
2. Lie at an angle in your hammock. Most hammocks are more comfortable with your head slightly to the left side (as you lie in it) and your feet slightly to the right. This gives you a "flatter" lie.
3. Set the angle of your suspension lines to about 30 degrees from parallel to the ground. Less than this, and the suspension may become too tight and stiff (or possibly break!). Much more than this, and you will be folded into a "banana" when you lie in it. You can estimate thirty degrees by making a sideways "L" or "gun shape" with your hand, with your index finger parallel to the ground. Your thumb should be vertical. If the lines touch just the tips of those two fingers, you're close to 30 degrees!
4. When you leave, DON'T FORGET YOUR TREE STRAPS ON THE TREE! (Don't ask me how I know)
