In addition, he was missing some severe context about Wilson’s character. He said that Wilson couldn’t be blamed for the other nations not following his fourteen points, but the video didn’t mention that Wilson had a messiah complex and everyone in the negotiations hated him because he felt he was better than them. Wilson basically sabotaged his fourteen points by being the one presenting them. Side note not really related to the video: One thing I don't think gets brought up enough is that the 16th Amendment was basically brought up in tandem with prohibition. Excise tax on alcohol was a substantial source of revenue for the government before income tax, and prohibition would obviously snuff that out. Alcohol excise taxes made up about 25% of the federal government's revenue in 1910. Those two amendments had a lot more to do with each other than people tend to think.

I've watched a lot of channels like the one that produced this video, and they're all pretty much the same. @@kaijuroar8415 The video was good. The one VTH put up of course. I get half of what Z was saying. Some of those things weren't really Wilson's fault. But the things that most people truly find fault with in Wilson: the racism and the messiah complex aren't really something that can be washed away with "it was a sign of the times". The video also didn't talk about 1919. In which the U.S. was in chaos in terms of Race Riots and other domestic issues, while Wilson was off in Europe. The leader of a country's duty should always be to their constituents first. Not that the reparations of WWI weren't important... but the U.S. was really in a pickle and he (Wilson) didn't do enough to address that. Even if you say that Wilson was a president that "did the best he could at the time" and that he was a "product of the time", that doesn't explain his actions in 1919. A president of the time, could have easily had a stronger response than Wilson did.

But everything after that... that's a yikes of a take to me. But it was good to see other people's opinions on this. I mean, clashes like this happen when going over history. And thankfully, the discourse over here has been civil.

No defence of Wison because he should have known, but the general public wasn't as knowledgable about the klan in the 1910s compared to now It had died off in 1870s only remembered by some of the people in the South. Only to be revived in the 1920s by this film/book. It was so unknown that in the Sherlock holmes tale "the 5 pips", where Holes takes on the KKK, Arthur conan doyle has to explain what KKK was to his readers in the Uk and US in the 1890s, because the organization had been dead for 20 years. Im just trying to point out that knowledge of the KKK wasnt as ubiqutous as we may assume. But the president should have known of it if he was interested in the subject.

Literally the only thing I've ever heard that made me think Wilson wasn't as bad as I thought was that he actually disclaimed the screening of _Birth of a Nation_ afterwards as "not my idea" and "kind of a dick move of the guy to say it was." I'm not sure if Presidents had the sense yet to be like "wait wait wait, someone _pre-screen_ this please, the last thing I need is to be witnessed watching just any old movie." Also, I think it's weird that Mrs. Wilson basically being Acting-President while her husband was incapacitated is, like, _celebrated_ by people? On feminist grounds? What a bizarre bypass of democracy that everyone decided was "cool!" She wasn't freakin' elected. She wasn't a cabinet officer. She's not _in line._ She had no business puppeting the President and running the country on WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S rules! Just a weird thing to idolize!

I'm with you about Woodrow Wilson, and for very similar reasons. From an accomplishment perspective, I think there are worse presidents than Woodrow Wilson. The Federal Trade Commission, the Federal Reserve, and the income tax are all important and necessary developments in American history, and his time as president was not uniquely marked by a lot of especially terrible policy.
