It is difficult finding reliable info on tortoises, I recommend the Tortoise Trust: www.tortoisetrust.org/ Here is my diet video: Mediterranean Tortoise Diet - Hermann's, Horsfield's, Greek, Egyptian and Marginated. , the best diet is a variety of fresh edible weeds, flowers and grasses as it is the most natural, I just fill up his bowl as it runs out so he can have a munch whenever he chooses :)

+dcgc2012 I recommend following the Tortoise Trust's advise of a mix of top soil and Children's play sand. I have also found that many tortoise resources provide conflicting advice, it's hard to know who to listen to. You might want to play around with the quantities to find out what works best for your tort, I started with a 50/50 mix and now it's more like 70/30 (70 being the top soil).
@kikitcat510 ай бұрын
It also can depend on breed/personality as well so it's so conflicting. That was the worst part when we were new owners.

I spot clean his enclosure every few days and give him a full clean out every 3-4 weeks. His food is free because I grow it all in my garden. I buy him supplements, cuttle bone, UV-B and heat bulbs when they blow, top soil and play sand for his substrate and hides and decorations occasionally. That's pretty much it, he is relatively cheap to keep compared to my other animals :) His set up was expensive initially though.

Tortoises do naturally hibernate during the winter. I did not hibernate him that year because I had only just got him and when I got him he was on a poor diet. I didn't want to hibernate him while I was changing him on to a healthy diet because hibernation can be dangerous if they are not the right size and weight for their age. He is now on a good diet of fresh weeds, flowers and grasses and is a good weight and size so I'm planning to hibernate him this year :)

Yea, if she fell in the pool it's probably best to build her a permanent enclosure so at least she cant get into any accidents. Make sure she always has access to fresh water in a shallow dish though. If you are making one out of bricks, make sure nothing can fall down on her, tortoises are really strong and can knock things down while trying to climb them.

Hi, it depends on the size of enclosure and the distance from the ground, the basking temperature needs to be around 30 degrees Celsius. I use a 100 watt bulb but what is important is the temperature in and out of the basking spot, you might need to play around with bulbs and the distance from the ground to achieve it :)

Hi, it's great you give her a soak every couple days, that will make sure she stays hydrated. flaky skin is normal, it's just them shedding off old skin cells, like snakes except tortoises shed it in little bits, it can also be down to her growing :)

Hello, I just have a little query about bathing tortoises. I try to bathe mine very regularly, and I use this bathroom sink to do it, usually after bringing him in after a long day wandering around in his pen outside. I fill the water to what I reckon is a good temperature and put him in and he seems to relax. After a while the water cools and I go to refill it. I try to bathe him for longer, to assist with defecation and such. But after that first or second refill he usually tries to clamber out of the sink, to no avail due to the slippery sides. I'm pretty confident that the waters I use shouldn't make him uncomfortable, but me and my family have had small arguments over whether it's cruel to keep him in the bath when he seems to want out. What do you guys think? If it seems like he should want out after around 5 minutes in the dip (about as long as it takes for it to cool the first time) should I take him straight out, or should I stick to my guns and keep him in longer, 'cause I've found before that it seems to help him defecate usually after the second refill at least.
@BeckysAnimals9 жыл бұрын
+Mayeur000Donz This is a tricky one, I get the same thing with Sheldon. I usually take her out when she is adamant she doesn't want to stay in, I let her chill out for a bit and then I try again later. Sheldon gets flaky skin and needs frequent baths to stay hydrated but after 2 or 3 minutes she gets bored and tries to climb out. I would try leaving him for a bit and then trying a second soak later? Leaving him in the water could stress him out but soaks do help them do their business, it's a tricky one.

I love tortoises, they are quite complicated to care for though so you need to do lots of research first :) In the wild they choose to be solitary so they are usually housed by themselves. I have a tortoise care section on my channel for in depth diet, housing videos ect but my videos only apply to Mediterranean tortoises so it depends what tortoise you get, they all have different diets and requirements :)

I have some concerning questions regarding my hermann's tortoise. It all started when I started bathing him less and less frequently, to the point where some might even call it neglectful. It ended up being that all I did for him was provide weeds and water, and little else. Lately though, I gave him another bath, and several things occurred to me. He hadn't defecated to my knowledge in several weeks, until I bathed him. Also, one of his legs seemed to be soiled black, with traces of excrement up in one of his armpits (legpits?). I had resolved to make an immediate change and get things more cleanly and orderly for him, but I'd like to know if it sounds like he's at any real health risk? He seems his usual self in nature, but I'm worried about the health issues this neglect of mine may have caused.
@jaseharper9449 жыл бұрын
Why the hell did you neglect him in the first place? Thats awful
@Mayeur000Donz9 жыл бұрын
KT Harper I suppose I just didn't realise how essential it was, at first... I thought for the longest time that it was a bonus. Much like the idea people have about bathing their dogs. When I started noticing his state and doing some further research I learned how important it was. Now he's bathed at least once a week.

Can anyone suggest why my tortoise doesn't appear to be defecating much? I have considered the idea of worms or the sort, but I'm hoping that it's something more fixable, seeing as the local vets aren't acquainted with reptiles. Since Spring started I've been feeding him weed leaves, clovers, dandylions, daisies, and these blades of grass-like weeds that I don't know the name of, along with a sprinkling of vitamin powder. Lately, I've been aiming to bathe him at least once a week. Every day ideally, with consistently warm water. I believe the last time he defecated was 3+ weeks ago. He still appears to be eating with enthusiasm, but not all in one go. When I provide his food, he often eats a small amount ravenously, and then loses interest. By the morning, he'd have had a second helping and more has been eaten. Do you suppose he's in desperate need of help?
@BeckysAnimals9 жыл бұрын
Mayeur000Donz I would get him to a reptile specialist, he could have a blockage. It's hard to say but he definitely need to be looked at! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmqlhHtsZs6YmdE

Awesome :) I'm not an expert but I have learnt a lot about torts since bringing Sheldon home and I spend a lot of time doing research :)
@BeckysAnimals11 жыл бұрын
Hi, keeping them outside or in depends on the climate and because Sheldon was bred and raised under heat lights, I don't want to put him outside full time in the appalling UK weather, instead I would recommend having both an outdoor and indoor enclosure and putting him outside on nice days to graze and soak up some real sunlight. I am building him an outdoor enclosure soon so he can have the best of both worlds and because the weather here is very different to his natural environment :)
