Your body doesn't allow you to use your full strength if it feels unstable. Similar to how you reactively pull back if you start to step on a slippery surface. Or how you become a little weaker if you're trying to balance on a ball while lifting something. This is pretty clear for most of the body and why you learn good form, hand placement, foot position, etc. But one thing many overlook is that when going to your absolute max, the entire line of your body can feel the strain and the position of your molars is key to feeling stable in your neck and head position. Without a mouth guard, you may feel limited in how tight you're willing to bite down for stability for risk of cracking your teeth. Having something to bite on gives a sensation of stability and comfort so that you can focus even more on the lift. It's not going to be a huge improvement, but it might take you up another 1% if you're working near your maximum load range on something that engages most or all of your body. Just think about any time you've ever started to grit your teeth when lifting, either you realize it's a distraction, or you've never actually gone hard enough that your mouth was engaged in the strain to activate your entire body. I would say that unless you're actually competing (like he does) it's not a big deal in regular training, but it is useful for finding your PR's or for that last fraction of competitive edge for someone that does compete. You don't need an expensive mouth guard to test it either. You can pick up a child's teething toy for like $1 and test it yourself. And if you decide that's useful there's plenty of boxing mouth guards that are half the price or less of what he's using.

I recently got a similar mouth guard for my heaviest lifts and grip training. Being able to bear down without reservation makes a big difference.

Allows you to bite down and tense all the muscles in your face, head and neck area allowing you more stability in said areas with relative comfort and decreased risk of dental trauma/wear. There's also the idea of "muscle irradiation", which essentially means that flexing the musculature around the muscles you are currently using to move mass causes the muscles you are using to generate greater force. For example when performing a bicep curl, your biceps will generate even greater force when you're maximally engaging your forearms during the exercise. This has been observed to be factually correct.

because he gets money for saying so. He deadlifted 475 like 2 years ago, since this thing is in his mouth he pulls less.

@@Nagy.Patrik While this comment may seem snide, I do think it's always worth keeping in mind that these athletes are, in fact, sponsored by companies with financial interests. I personally think Mitchell is a man of integrity, and his past behaviour has shown him to be transparent, honest and direct in any interactions he has had on and off camera. Based on these factors I would be inclined to believe he is giving an honest recommendation and not a paid advert, but obviously we can't be sure. As for Mitchell's apparent loss of deadlifting power, I can only offer speculation. I don't follow the strongman scene with a microscope, but I would venture a guess that Hooper's 475 kg deadlift was done in a deadlift-only competition for which he specifically peaked, and ever since his participation in WSM he has been competing in full competitions with the aim to score good overall points meaning his training would have to have become more holistic. In fact, it's more than likely Mitchell's high 1RM deadlift allows him to somewhat neglect training it altogether. It's considered a good event for him, which means he can get away with just training it for reps and maintaining his ability in said lift. Since the human body only has a limited capacity to recover, it's much wiser to spend your resources towards strengthening your weaknesses. We've seen Mitchell focus a lot on the dumbbell lately, for example, which would support the idea that he's targeting weaknesses. Athletes have to prepare for their competitions, and one-off exhibition lifts are but a rare exception.

Website says it keeps the tongue down and forward... So the tongue cannot touch the roof palate while clinched? Pretty important to know before buying.

Also, there was some pink lipstick, if uses before Stones - can do deadlift and stones at the same time, I suggest Dior, only $1000 :)
