I reverted in June, and started wearing hijab straight away, but didn't wear it full time until about a month later, as I had a volunteering job at a charity shop with a college and it was about the end so I waited until it was over to save myself from all the awkward explanations, ive been wearing it since july/August and I was 18 years old, ive turned 19 now. Got to admit it's hard when youve got your life established but already in such a short time theres no money or anything in the world that could get me to take it off!

I am christian and I do not wear a hijab but i have so much respect and admiration for women who do. I think its a beautiful act of worship and modesty. It really shows that this woman loves her God.

How does covering the hair suddenly act as a magic shield from male attention and show someone is 'devout' and 'modest', when she wears make up? I've seen women on TV with high heals, short leggings showing the ankles and calves, make up and yet wearing a hijab! Doesn't that defeat the whole idea of covering up modestly? Personally, I'm deighted that some muslim women try to get away with as much as they can and dress and make-up as they please. However, others will be vilified for doing it and in muslim countries would be accosted by the morality polilce.

I'm glad some muslim women in the west are able to compromise in how far they take 'modest' dressing and I'm glad they can do it. But it still depends on their husbands or families allowing them to wear make-up, high heals or whatever. Women should dress as they please. It is men who want to control them, the first being the so-called prophet (what did he ever prophesy, btw??) who became jealous and insecure about his young wives as he got older. I will wear what I like - I don't care if my husband doesn't like it!

+LondonJo wearing a hijab is an act of worship...i worship God in many different ways from how a muslim woman would but i still admire the act of wearing a hijab and why they wear it. Sure, maybe in some households men can be controlling (in any country), but i admire the women who chose it for themselves. its a public display of worship and thats what i admire. And thats great that you chose to wear what you want regardless of what your husband thinks, i wear whatever i want regardless as well. I do have very different beliefs from muslim beliefs but theres bits i do admire. I think its important to find admirable aspects about cultures and customs that defer from your own.

I don't like any religion because they all treat women as inferior, they stop progress (particularly true of Islam), they interfere in education and government, they give men power over women and they involve superstitious beliefs that we know are based on ignorance of science. However, I find it interesting to live in a city where people come from all over the world, on the whole live peacefully together and have interesting customs, clothing and food traditions. Unfortunately, when ethnic minorities live together in one area and do not mix with other people this causes tensions and clothing is one way in which they seem to set themselves apart. We need to encourage integration but that is not easy with muslims because they are sure that the rest of us are inferior and a bad influence and they want to impose their Sharia (law) on the rest of the society.

I grew up with a convert mother and there's not much difference than if you were to grow up with a Muslim-born mother, other than the fact that your family is very mixed i.e. You have many non-Muslim relatives on your mum's side

Im not muslim but my husband is.. i know haram and all .. but few month ago we went to his family and they ask me to cover my hair so a I did that . i was covering my hair for 3 days and must say It was really difficult is just scarf but non muslim was looking at me and i was feeling really strange it wasnt "nice look" from their eyes but muslim girl they were so nice for me outside even tho, smile !! everyday muslimah they dont smile even if i do haha ;) So for girls who wearing hijab everyday very big 👍👍👍 .. btw. u are my fav muslim youtuber and live ur video 😊

Sadly that's just how people are. When you wear a hijab they will judge you, and when you take it off they will keep on judgeing you for different reasons. Follow your heart. If you like wearing the hijab, then do it and don't stop for anyone. I would also recommend you to detox your life for toxic people that make you feel bad. Surround your self with people that accept you and are happy for you, because if you have good people close to you then the rest don't matter. 😊

Don't worry if you don't. God cares about the inside more than the out, so as long as you are a nice person to others and hold nice intentions towards others, then this is what God will be seeing and judging you for. I have many non-hijabi friends but they are nicer than many other hijabi girls.

That's very liberal and kind. Personally, I don't mind what people wear but with the hijab the niqab and the burkha, often women are bullied into wearing them or conditioned to think they will be shunned or at least disapproved of by their communities.

We are not, actually. It's quite the opposite in most countries (Pakistan, Senegal, Turkey, Egypt, etc); some husbands don't want their wives to wear hijab or in my case my mom didn't want me to wear it, etc. In the west, it's way worst ! That's fine. Its nice that you feel you have a choice. However, even in Britain there are many muslim women who are not allowed to leave their houses unless dressed as their husbands or families dictate. Why the hijab, though? Couldn't you wear a western-style hat? The hijab is a religious symbol, just as a Christian crucific or a Sikh turban are. Don't these symbols give the message that the wearers want to be seen as separate from the mainstream society?

LondonJo I don't think so, firstly it's only a small minority of muslim women who wear the veil & it's deeply haram (unlawful) in Islam to force your daughters/wife to do something against their will; otherwise it's called "thulm" (oppression) & they would do it because of you and not because of Allah Who commanded it; while on the day of Judgement our actions are judged by our intentions. ex: you pray to show off that you are "pious" (you get 0 reward) VS you pray to have a link with Whoever created you - which is logical - & to worship Him & to seek His assistance (you are rewarded)! Hope it makes sense lol I speak french not english! It's not a symbol, we have nothing to prove to you, we don't care (no offence, really), *it's a religious obligation just like praying, fasting, giving 2.5% of our annual income to the poor, etc. It's part of the islamic laws, I'm not **_really_** practicing Islam if I don't practice hijab, and why on earth wouldn't I practice the Way of the Creator duuh =D !* &Hijab is actually inherently spiritual, I'm a student of the Quran and the ayaat (I guess you could call it verse)(ugh but it's not a verse lol)) where Allah *commands* the muslim women to wear hijab is one of the most spiritual ayaat in the Quran (it ends with something like "come back to Me, o you believers, so that you may be successful", so beautiful"). Hijab directly affects our spiritual heart (the one that Allah preprogrammed to recognizes Truth from falsehood, injustice from justice, etc... a non-muslim wouldn't understand, it's fine my english sucks so lol). *Anyway, long story short: it's a religious obligation like praying and stuff, it's not a symbol, it is part of "practicing my religion" (a freedom that I have, right :D)* edit: &by the way, most of us are more "hardcore" than our husband lool. My sister started wearing the NIQAB - which is not even obligatory in Islam, it's more than hijab - a few days before marrying her husband and he was like "that's all kind of messed up" and started laughing, loool because he didn't even know (but don't worry they didn't argue about it or anything, he told me that he loves her even more because women like her are hard to find, they are very in love, he is obsessed with her actually haha. our husbands are cuuute).

Great video, Dina! I definitely agree with you on how it is much easier to wear hijab at a younger age. I started wearing it when I was 14 and I'm glad I did-elhamdulillah. I always feel very confident and connected to Allah with my hijab. Like you said, it is a constant reminder of who I really am for both myself and the people around me. I stumbled across your videos and wanted to comment and tell you how much I enjoyed you positive energy and particularly how much I learned from this video. I am roughly the same age as you but basically do not know anyone who is Muslim as I went to a traditional Christian girls school growing up. Islam teaches both women and men be modest and have distance when it comes to contact with opposite gender. Men also have “modest regulations” such as wearing pants lower than knee area etc. so hijab is not about forcing women to change for the sake of men, but just a “modest regulation” related to female. @@annika9348 I understand your meaning. But as there are different styles of clothing or wearing a hijab, everyone wants to be different in there own way. I agree with u that putting lots of make-up and putting a hijab is also attracting to somebody's face. But innitally they will be more attracted if you're also not wearing a scarf. Atleast it covers your boozem and behind. Perhaps also women wants to make-up to cover some pimples or to just look fresh then as they wake up and have to deal with dark under eye circles. So everyone has her own reason why, some have to go to there job and the rules at work are maybe to be neat and representive. So hijab makes not a reason to not wear make-up. Only in my opinion I rather want to wear it amongst familie or a wedding than daily massive around ma face on the streets or while getting something from the groceries shop/market you know what I mean. For me it will be time wasting and somehow I will get tired of repeating it daily. Make-up means for me on special occasions. Those are the moments It makes it special for me, rather without I will be fine.

In the most respectful way possible, what is the attitude towards makeup in terms of modesty? Because in my (non religious) household, makeup was way more focused on in terms of sexuality than hair etc. Like if I wore too much, my mum would tell me I looked cheap, or like someone who sells their body.. I know you said that Allah expects Muslims to present themselves well and I can see how makeup can fit into this too, however.

+Jessica Aldridge Attitude towards makeup is to be modest i.e wear it down. You see many people who wear hijab yet put 100 tonn of make up or wear tight clothing that reveals their curves. The whole point of Hijab is to cover your beauty from others except first family i.e husband, sister etc. I am afraid alot of people are quiet hypocrtical when it comes to Hijab.

Every one, understand the rules of the hijab as they want, that's a problem but it's also a work to know how to wear hijab, you have to do you research and respect the rules as much as you can.. For me hijab is mooore than just cover your hair, you have to cover all your body (jilbeb, long skirts, dresses no trousers or jeans), don't wear any make up and have the most perfect behaviour with yourself and people. Lovely video with an informativ intro for people who might not know anything about it :) I'm 20 and just started wearing hijab in april. It is kinda hard changing your appearance after being hijabless all your life and also I'm the only hijabi at my school (there arent many muslims where i live) so i was really scared of the resposibility that came with it. But I thought it through & was convinced I wanted to do it so I did alhamdulillah. Loved the informative beginning. Its funny because before Islam I wore mini shorts with my boobs half out of my tops haha...my grandma used to say I dress too sexy. The other day I was wearing a sweater maxi dress with my scarf on and my grandma says..."Chelsey you look sexy in that dress!" haha my moms like "Shes fully covered head to toe!" Hi Dina, I just want to say thank you for all your help....I was 26 years old when I started wearing the hijab. I decided to start after watching some of your tutorial videos. It's been almost 5 years now and I'm still going strong. I do have those days when I feel like I really don't want to wear it but I push thought it and just go on. Funny enough I had some really terrible comments from friends and family when I started wearing the hijab....most ppl said I was going through a phase and others just wondered how long it would last but alghamdulilah I'm still wearing it and love it, most of the time. Actually the concept of being liberated is not quite the point of Islam. I dont get why ppl are so obsessed with it. In life, liberation is not the goal. Why make it one for hijab? Everything we do has to have its limits for our own good. If we aimed for liberation in all we do, we will all end up with nothing as everybody will tend to follow their innermost desires without set boundaries meant to protect and uphold. A hijab is for identity and a way we show submission to Allah. Males have hijabs too. Life as a Muslim means so much more than liberation.

+Saleha Seedat to a certain degree i agree, although i must also say, when before people were judging you in attractive or not attractive, there are still some people who just shift you in category hjiab, not wanting to see you having a own personality. However you can't help these ignorant people. They are mostly small minded, prejudiced and unable to accept different people. When you wear hijab, these kind of people stay automatically away from you. This also help in finding good friends, who are open, tolerant and friendly as headscarf works like a filter in not letting bad people come close to you. Even bad guys with no serious intentions stay away. I started to wear hijab, because i consider it as duty for muslims. God told us to wear it that we are recognizable as muslims. And soon after wearing it, i realized how wise this actually is. You really get recognized as a muslim. And it gets much easier to be accepted the way you practice your religion. Before I always got asked, why I wear long sleeves in summer, why I never do sexy, why I don't have a bf, why I don't drink alcohol and so on. The answer got never understood. However if there are good or bad effects, should not convince us to wear or not to wear it. At the end God knows best for us. Still we can not deny that it has effects of course :)

+Zaiinab.xo modesty is in the eye of the beholder. If she thinks she is dressed modestly then she is dressed modestly. It also depends in the culture or area she is living in. If you look at the population of england you would say she is dressed modestly. So just because you neck or chest is not covered doesnt mean you are not dressed modestly. Same thing goes for the hair being exposed. It is also a cultural thing. The jilbab and niqab wasn't even a thing in my culture until saudi arabia started pushing for it. when my mum was a kid in somalia, the Hijab was non existent but we still considered ourself muslim. So you have to take all these other factors into account before you judge someone because they really do affect how someone behaves, dresses and speaks.

hi! I started wearing mine at 10. I remember it was October too! I went to a school that was pretty judgemental, so I was extremely scared of wearing it! But one day, I took the hijab, put it on my head, and walked around. I got alot of stares from the other fifth graders,but as days went on, everyone started to like it! They always asked me to wear different colours and always compliment me! I say you go for it!!!! The first day wearing to school will be hard, but after that you will be more and more comfortable in it. how a woman styles their hijab is often times based on culture. so if you live in a country that mostly has women covering all their face that's fine and good for you but please be mindful and respect other cultures in which the women just cover their head and chest. Also the other way around. If you don't want to wear niqab because it's not common in your culture, that's fine but don't disrespect those who chose to wear it. Actually, the word used in Quran is Khimar not hijab, which is a piece of cloth that covers the upper part of the body (chest) along with the hair. Wearing the hijab with not covering up your chest doesn't do anything. The whole purpose of modesty is lost then. just wanted to put it out there!

in my experience in my country. I have dozens of friends who wear the hijab and it was their choice. my cousin one year decided to do it. she was 16. she wore it for two year but she struggled when all of us would go to the beach in our bikinis. her mom sat down with her and had a conversation about why she decided to wear the hijab and after that she said to her that her reasons weren't right and she can take it off if she wants to. she did. he mom is a hijabi. im sure there are some girls who wear it because they're oppressed to do it. but in my personal experience I have never encountered one. some of my friends are the only ones wearing it in their whole families.

I love watching your videos, but just a couple of interesting contradictions. You say the hijab means "liberation" but it's literally a constraint. Even the literal definition you gave is "barrier" or "screen." That means the opposite of liberation. I agree that we live in a Misogynist, sexualized society, but many (including myself) would say that your religion and many religions, are also misogynist. The woman is expected to protect her modesty but not the man right? Misogynist double standard that is being legitimized right there.

+HARMONY LING LING in Islam there is a certain level of modesty for men too! as for example a man belly button is part of the body that should be covered from all other women till his knees so it is not double standard as you may thinkg specially that you are not forced to wear it you take part in it by your choice =] and as in other practices some people proudly wear a bindi or a turban its a proud thing muslim par take in by free will

+HARMONY LING LING as Ibrahim have said, men also have a level of modesty, and the obligation to not stare at women with desire. women also in their way have a level of modesty in order to help mutually to construct a society with no sex before marriage, and where family only take place versus temporal relationship. Indeed this goes against individual materialistic freedom, but probably not against commune (society) freedom.

Super love this video because I learned a lot too! I am a Shia Ismaili Muslim and no women in our religion wear hijab. I know some other sects of Islam do not require hijab either and I think non-Muslims and Muslims should be aware of that because a lot of people look at me and assume I am a bad Muslim for not wearing a hijab, when in reality it is not required for me. Wearing a hijab is not specified in the Quran! That being said, I have so much respect for those Muslim women who do wear the hijab or any other covering. We live in such a sometimes scary and judging world, and hijabi women carry themselves with such confidence and look so good at the same time! :) Thank you for this Dina!

Wow!! What a joke!!! I dont mind people wear it or not ... it's obviously a choice and between the individual and Their Lord... But Dina Tokio took it too far when she said that hijab is a "cult"... What does she even think or know??? She's not a scholar or anything ... She doesn't wanna wear.. fine don't... But giving out messages to motivate women to not wear it...Does she have a misconception that it is a human law and not a divine one???!!!
