What you say is very correct here too. Please imagine the case that an intruder carries a kitchen knife and I kill him with a fighting knife cutting his throat. The court will judge that I thrust him at a lethal part with a stronger knife based on my medical knowledge despite that he carries a knife just to threaten me. To make legitimate self-defense I need to stab an unlethal part of his body with a weaker knife aftar I am injured by him decently. It is pretty unfair to good people. Thanks.

I have a strong plan. I need to be injured on my abdomen or extremities, but the opponent has to be injured on its neck or chest lethally. I am right handed and fortunately the opponent's heart is on its left. My knife is never aimed to its abdomen but to its upper body to reach its cardiovascular system. A scary sharp knife is needed to do it. I just protect my chest and neck sacrificing other portions of my body. Many people are killed eacy year with knives. They don't have a plan. Thanks.

You are even in worse condition than here in Italy, regarding self defense... It will be always too late when our governments will understand that the right to defend our family should be by far more important (and also legitimate) than defending the criminals, which also violated our private property. Thanks for the interesting video.

In the U.S. we have, for the greater part, a gun culture and burglars would frequently have a gun. I could easily not have been born because my grandfather was just a weak squeeze away from shooting his own son who was coming home from school and it was late so decided to pry a window. In the dark the bad outcome was a near thing. A gun isn't a bad thing for home defense but GREAT care and CAUTION need be used. I think the gun using homeowner must have a pre conceived plan for defense and it must be a legal approach to the defense. It is harder than some think to fool the forensic cop. This was a thoughtful video, Doc, and you could have been more topical.

Defense with a gun against a knife is judged as over defense in the court definitely. If we hate to be accused, we need to chose the same weapon as the intruder has. Anyway I can kill it with the same weapon legitimately. When I bash it on its head with the batoning flashlight, it will take a skull fracture. It is determined as soon as it breaks in here, not for my responsibility. I believe the intruder is even easier to deal with than a brown bear. Thanks.

I'll never understand why a legal system would favor criminals. A bad guy invading a private family's house is extremely dangerous, and innocent residents are justified to attack with everything they have. If someone breaks into your house, that is a direct threat to the lives of your family, and the only thing that matters is winning the contest. Waiting to assess the threat is suicide. In the US, the laws differ greatly from state to state. But I favor the ones that enable good people to protect themselves at any and all costs to the bad.

Unfortunately if an intruder invades your home there will be no tike to "assess" the situation. If someone invades my home my assessment is to take him out, its my responsibility as a father and husband to protect my family. I'm not saying use lethal force but if he's in my house there will be a reckoning. Lethal force should always be an option as it is not fair to expect a peacful untrained citizen to make appropriate decisions when engaged with an agressor. I live in Canada and it basicly illegal to use deadly force to protect myself. If i injure the assailant and he can nolonger work, i can be sued for damages. I have decided that if faced with an assailant i will do what i have to and accept the consequences, sad but true but in Canada the criminal has more rights than the victim.
@tSp289
@tSp289 9 жыл бұрын
***** I think it's like in the UK. You can use deadly force if you reasonably believe they are trying to harm you. You'd determine this by their actions, words and what they were carrying. If they had a weapon, it's safe to assume they mean to use it. If they start towards you, you don't know what they're going to do so you put them down. If they verbally threaten you, then they have given you reason to believe they will harm you. I think you can't just attack them for being in your home. You _can_ forcibly eject them by threat or physically kicking their arse out of the door, but not using lethal force, and if you hurt them and they are no longer a threat, it is not OK to continue to harm them in any way, though you can (and should) restrain them. Of course, this is in a country where the chances of an intruder being armed are minimal, so in 99% of cases this law is perfectly reasonable. If they had a gun of course, it wouldn't be, because a gun can go from 0 to 'you're dead' in under a second, so shooting first is much more understandable. You could argue the same for knives, but most of the time, the above laws cover that, as the invader will most likely try to escape at the first sign of discovery.

Hey Mr. Wako, I would like to recommend a couple of things that may help a home defense without guns. Here in USA wasp and hornet bee killer is great for distracting a would be burgler. It shoots like about 12ft and works like pepper spray. Trip wires in your home might distract someone while you whip them with that wood sword, and that Kabar fighting knife is excellent, I would maybe ad a lanyard to it to keep it in your hand in a fight though. Hopefully, you will never need any of it.

In Germany we are not allowed to own modern firearms, only one shot black powder muzzle loaders are allowed without licence. To have a gun you have to have a licence, either as a competition shooter in small caliber or big caliber handgun or rifle, starting out with weapons you borrow from an official shooting Club you have to be a member of. After some time you will be allowed to own a registered gun, then a second, later a third one and so on. Or you have to get a hunting licence, what means to have theory lessons, learning everything about the animals, the hunting seasons, how to maintain your weapon, shooting the animal to cause fast death to reduce suffering to a minimum, how to kill the animal when it runs away after beeing shot without using another bullet but a knife and how to process the meat. And other things I may have forgotten. You have to pass a test, then you have a hunting licence. Then you have to find somebody who owns the right to hunt and shoot in a specific aerea and get the permission to hunt. Our self defense law is on the side of the person getting attacked. But you have to maintain proportionality. This means you are allowed to hurt him to a state where he is no longer a threat, and you are allowed to use the weapon or implement that seems to be appropriate to do the job. So you are allowed to use a knife when somebody breaks into your house, because you do not know if he is there to hurt you or your family - and you don't know if he has a heavy tool like a hammer, or maybe a screwdriver or an actual knife in his pocket. But you are not allowed to kill him, you are just allowed to incapacitate the aggressor. You will not go to prison if you defend yourself from someone breaking into your house and you "incapacitate" him with a crosshoe handle. I have two of them, I gave my bokuto to my second son. If you kill somebody in self defense who attacks you with a club, and you used a knife, this will be OK. If you stabb him several times in a self defense situation and kill him with 5 stabbs, this will be called "overreacting in a self defense situation", and it will be OK. Because you have the right of beeing unharmed, but the aggressor lost this right as he attacked you. There even is something called "putative self defense", what means, if some big guy is comming at you with an angry face, looking or acting agressive, his hands are fists, and you think that you are in danger, you are allowed to defend yourself. But here comes the "proportional self defense" to count. You are not allowed to stabb this guy, but you may use the hoe handle or the bokuto. In this situation you are not free to smash his head, but incapacitating him by hitting his knee, making him go down this way. If he goes not down you are allowed to do more damage. You are also allowed to incapacitate an aggressor who is attacking or about to attack another person like your wife, your child or a friend that is with you. But rule No. 1 allways is: You have the right of beeing unharmed. If somebody attacks you or a person you have some kind of connection to, the aggressor has lost his right of beeing unharmed.

I think you're absolutely right to consider your position Doc. In the end, perhaps every man in the world will have to make the decision to either defend his family and property in the way HE wants to or obey the unjust laws of a government which has disarmed him but not the criminals. In virtually every case each government gave the assurance that THEY would defend a man's home if he gave up the right to bear arms and in virtually every case they lied or have failed in their obligation.

What I don't like however, is that Finland has pretty much the same problem as Japan with laws over-protecting the intruder/perpetrator. We have to be really careful not to get prosecuted. I say all bets are off, and an invader shouldn't have such high expectations of legal protection for his illegal actions, but instantly going for a kill isn't good either.

Jari Perho In Italy we have similar situation. Statistics in USA depends also on the easiness they buy a weapon and carry it outdoor (that's a problem), but in home defense i think they do the right thing. Huskymotard88 There are NO problems with carry a handgun outside the home. Millions of Americans have a license to carry a firearm, and they aren't shooting everything in sight. My state of Pennsylvania has over 800,000 carry licenses issued, and a low homicide rate. In fact, the U.S. homicide rate is at the same level it was in 1962. Google FBI Uniform Homicide Table 8, and you'll see handgun homicides in the mid-8,000's, and knife homicides right around 1,600. Hands/fists/feet were used to kill 660 people in that table. I carry a lightweight 1911 everyday in a shoulder holster, and think about it the same way I do seatbelts.

Hey now. I live in an area of California that might as well be Asia, and I got no complaints. These people are quiet and keep to themselves. But the teenagers will always be teenagers of course. I was rowdy myself as a kid, so I don't give them a hard time.

a nice, properly weighted ball peen or cross peen hammer makes a great home defense option, and it is not something that is strictly a weapon so i think you would maybe be less likely to get into trouble if you had to use it.

Dr. Wako, I would incorporate the bear spray in your first line of defense. If an attacker cannot see, they are no longer a threat. This is a non-lethal alternative to more contact-oriented weapons. This will also give you some options and time if you are trying to assess how much of a response you should mount to an intruder. I think the flashlight/ bear spay combo would be my choice. Then the hardwood sword or bat. You don't want to get too close assuming the intruder has a knife.

I know this video is very old, but how about hurricane glass windows? They’ve come down some in $ here in the USA, anything that starts by making the breakable glass stronger should be the spear point of your defense plan. Stay safe mr Wako

I understand. As you may know we are also in a struggle in America to keep our gun and self defense rights. The struggle is intense and the people will not give in so easily. Wish us luck!

I know that you have bear spray for your outdoor excursions; Do you keep it handy for home protection as well? A good spray of it, I'm sure, would greatly increase the opportunity for effective use of your other weapons. What is your method of carrying all of the items? Do you hold the flashlight in the non-dominant hand while wielding the wooden sword in the other? Knife on lanyard around neck?

I believe Dr. Wako when he says he's prepared. I'd be interested to see how a Bravo 1.5 with a swedge grind would do as a fighting/defense knife. It has just enough length. I'd be a little worried about traction, though.

Wako, have you thought about a baseball bat? We have a couple around the house. Cold steel makes some weighted polymer bats that they claim are virtually indestructible. Might be an okay alternative?

I understand. The saying we have here is, "it's better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6." Meaning, tried by a jury of 12 people in court, than carried by 6 in a coffin.

Good video. Unfortunate laws. If bad guy has a knife Japanese law allows you to use a knife. Unless you are highly trained you will get cut, possibly seriously, in a knife fight as you alluded to in the video. A knife is a lethal weapon yet but you can't counter with another lethal weapon, i.e., your hunting rifle. Instead you are forced to risk substantial injury to yourself defending your home and family. Good though that you have developed a plan on what to do.

Does it really matter what kind of a knife you have for self defense purposes? I mean if you intend to cause severe injuries or even kill to defend yourself, pretty much any knife will do, heck you can even stab someone to death with a screwdriver or a pencil. Here in Finland the one who gets less injuries usually gets prosecuted if taken to court, even if its just a fistfight. so the real question is, would you rather be killed or prosecuted as such, if you had to defend yourself?

If you truly believe that your office / home is a target for break-ins, what about investigating more robust window solutions (such as glass block or break-resistant glass) or even putting up bars on the exterior to prevent entrance even if the window is broken.

sir I would suggest a full sized k-bar with 7 inch blade. Also don't try to go trough the chest or ribs but just under the ribcage with an upward trust or come in from above inside the scapula and clavicle. You can pierce the heart and lungs with one thrust from beneath or above. That is why the k-bar has a 7 inch blade. Also try a nonfunctional replica rifle with a bayonet affixed and learn some basic bayonet fighting technique. That would be far superior to any knife. Stay safe.
