The best part of Buggy in this adaption is that he is scary, a villain, and then finally a clown. The transition from being a villain to comedic relief is believable and accepted. Haven't heard anybody complain that they build him up as a cruel, scary captain that destroyed a town and trapped the citizens to someone that ran from a fight from a bigger baddie.

I think the best character in the One Piece live action was Mihawk. They somehow managed to perfectly capture his energy and perfectly capture his look with zero compromises. And his intro scene was one of the most badass scenes I've seen in a live action.

I'm one of those that never watched the anime, even though I was always exposed to it. cause I had two cousins that I lived with that was crazy about One Piece, Naruto, DBZ, Bleach and others. they nearly never missed an airing episode. anyway, I fired up Netflix and seen the live action One Piece series cover pop up. Something about it intrigued me even though since the first time I briefly seen the original, I didn't like One Piece, for no reason. I gave into my curiosity and watched it. I loved it and watched the whole series, maybe more than once, I'm excited for season 2, and I actually started watching the anime after I finished the live action series. Now I'm determined to catch up on the One Piece franchise. so I'm binging the One Piece anime on Netflix now. @@RocketLuffy64 again, it's an ADAPTATION of the series, in which Oda himself supervised the whole production from the start till the end. and any executive changes that the production wanted to do had to go through the man himself so that the essence of the one piece that every fan is familiar with is still there, despite some scenes or characters that didn't make the cut because of several factors. It is impossible to expect it to be 100% true to the material, and Oda himself knows that. it's a series that is targeted at non-manga or non-anime consumers, but at the same time a series that could be enjoyed by all various types of people who are interested in it's storyline.

Same here. Just finished Baratie in the anime. So far, I'm gaining a deeper appreciation for the live actions thoughtful adaptation. While each arc had some story beats I wish were included, I think the live action did a great job in capturing the most important aspects of each story it covered so far in the context it aims for. Well said about Inaki(Luffy). Playing as Luffy is INCREDIBLY dangerous. Tweaking it a little to the realism side and he becomes too serious and uncharacteristic, but tweaking it a little to the goodfy side and he becomes total cringe. There was a very thin line to walk at and Inaki treaded it well.

Inaki was truly born to play Luffy. I totally get why Oda was laughing his ass off watching the audition tape cuz THAT'S HIM. Actually weirdly this adaptation seems to be bringing in fans from older generations from my experience. Since these days, at least in the english speaking world, manga/anime has become very mainstream among younger people and many ultimatley find their way to the crown jewel that is OP. So young fans are a plenty. But among an older audience who never really interacted with manga/anime or only those who managed to go big in the US in the late 90s and early 00s(which OP failed to do big time due to a fumbled dub) have never been introduced to it. Those seem to be driven to it by the live action in big numbers now.

At almost 40 I'm one of your older viewers, and it's been 20 years since I've regularly watched One Piece on TV. I also cannot say that I had much time over the last 10-15 years to continue to watch and get up to speed with more recent arches of it, but it always used to be one of my favorite anime, and this adaptation... just felt right. It was great entertainment and gave me a lot of nostalgia. It's like a little miracle. After what netflix had done to Deathnote and Cowboy Bebop (two more of my favorite anime) I really was very apprehensive about this, but they really hit the spot with this one. I'm really excited for the next season.

The Usopp arc became underwhelming because they removed a key moment of Usopp, deciding to protect the town because no one believes him. They made the scene where Usopp decides to stay by Kaya’s side even if she didn’t believe him to be similar. The pay off wasn’t as big with this, but it has the same concept for usopp’s character. Even if he’s a coward, if the things he cares about are in danger, he’ll stand up and fight for it. They just made it about friends instead of the whole village which still works with the theme of one piece.

@@Bud_Buddhano, it’s not the same, rather quite different. In live action Ussop told villagers that pirates are coming just because he asked for help. But In manga, he just tried to tell them that because he wanted to warn them and wanted them to run away from the pirates. He had the courage to take action and fight against enemies to protect what he cares even if he’s alone. but in live action he just waits and sits.

@@AM-lx6vl I definitely prefer how it played out in the manga, but everything works within the context of the live action. He sought out help from the village *and* the marines but they all denied him so he decided to protect Kaya himself. And since Kuro, Sham and Bucci were all in the mansion it makes sense that he'd stand guard in her room. That being said, he definitely should have had a more significant role in the fight against the Black Cat pirates instead of giving all the action to Luffy and Zoro.

I agree about Usopp. He needs to get more combat screentime next season. He had his fight in Arlong Park, but during the Syrup village episodes it just wasn’t obvious at all why they should even bring Usopp on the crew. He should have had his own fight during that arc. They could have shaved off some time during those episodes and include Jango so that Usopp can fight him.
@KingSolir

I don't really agree, I think they could have done that if they had 9-10 episodes but they didn't, I think all they had to do to make Usopp a better fit for the crew this season was make him actually fire the cannon precisely. The part where he fumbled with all the cannonballs made him feel useless, being the crews sharpshooter his aim is his main purpose in the crew, they screwed his character pretty hard in that scene.

Me too, I Love that the L.A. One Piece expands on them, but they changed Garp a bit too much, but if they justify the changes next season (I have hope), the plot holes that could appear due to their current Garp Path, could be mitigated... But i feel like season 2 would need 12 episodes of 1 hour each, And i feel like they could do "OVA" style 2 extra episodes flashing out why and how Usopp joined, and his active role in mentaining the ship, cementing him as a true Strawhat Crewmember (But also we really need to establish his weakness, and grouts that happened until and during Arlong Park), until, at least, we meet Frankie in season 3 (Frankie is based on young Jim Carrey, so, if we find a lookalike, that can get his facial expressions 30% to what Jim did, and has a close enough voice to Frankie, and Sponsored by Coca-Cola for the Cyborg Practical effects or CGI). Also, we need more justification in the "OVA" style bonus episodes to Sanji joining the crew and being so adamant about being loyal until death. And all that because we didn't have time with only 8 episodes, Should have been at least 10 (meaning at least 2 hours of extra content needed for the "OVA")... But I guess this, at least for who it hooks, could just read the manga, driving more attention to the source...

@@Narinjas I think Season 2 should only cover until they arrive to Alabasta and Season 3 should be the Alabasta saga. There is a ton of stuff for Franky been in season 3, Water 7 arc is way far ahead. We have Smoker, Laboon, Robin’s introduction, the giants in their 100 year duel and Chopper’s arc. That is a lot to cover, especially if they do 8 episodes again. And then after Alabasta, there is Skypea saga, that should be season 4. The difference between costumes for One Piece and other anime is Oda has color walkthroughs where Strawhats are all dressed in different things. So, for Mihawk, he can wear that outfit because he’s there for one episode. But the Strawhats are always changing into outfits Oda designed prior.

I also really enjoyed the live action. As you said, it's not perfect, but you can tell the cast and crew really understood the spirit of the story and put their hearts and souls into it, so it's very recognizable. It helps that while the cartoony slapstick nature of the show was toned down for live-action, it's still definitely a show that doesn't take itself super seriously, and there are plenty of silly moments that still feel genuine. I think my biggest gripe is that Luffy's fights tend to be underwhelming compared to the other characters--in the anime/manga Luffy is very creative with constantly using his stretching powers in new and unique ways, but in the LA he only really stretches during finishing moves and significant strikes (like protecting Nami from Arlong). I'm guessing this was a restriction made by CGI and budgeting, since Luffy's powers pretty much require CGI while Zoro, Nami, Usopp and Sanji can all have badass battles with good stunt work and practical effects. That being said, I do appreciate that they worked around this somewhat by giving Luffy a small character arc about learning how to work with others and be a leader and make tough calls. It made him seem more inexperienced but getting better, than just straight up being weaker than the others.

As someone new to One Piece I absolutely loved it. I could definitely feel the anime-ness in the tone and they embraced much of the silliness without it being overbearing. The production design is stellar, you can really see the care that went into the world building in the costumes, props and sets. The performances from Iñeki, Taz and Emily were the highlights for me and really felt distinct and authentic. I agree the mansion episodes were poorly paced, the confrontation with Kuro felt like it would never end. Other than that I'm extremely impressed and looking forward to season 2!

Garp being put in early was actually a change pushed by the producers. Their reason being they needed a secondary b plot to add higher stakes for Luffy and his crew. Ofc Oda still has to green light it but apparently after some persuading. Same with Arlong’s early appearance tho the reason this time to set him up as an antagonist earlier.

Seeing One Piece in a live-action setting, it really gives off a similar vibe as Adventure Time with how it built up to the subtle reveal as well as background hints up until then that the Land of Ooo was post-apocalyptic Earth. With all the cultural and historical anachronisms, stuff that to us looks very familiar, combined with all these sprinkles of magic (devil fruit powers) and fantasy (fish men and sea monsters) and science-fiction (the snail phones), but all together here looks very chaotic like none of it should go together, but it still makes sense; all this absurdity helps suspend disbelief. It gives this sense almost unease that something is not quite right with this world.

Oda's active involvement is what I think really made this show successful. A lot of times you get shows greenlit with a budget and just kinda let them go off with no restrictions. But generally if you don't have to fight for your vision, then you're just gonna be using the worst version of it. So having every idea go through Oda and having to earn his approval resulted in refining each new idea more and more until it finally gained approval. My fear with season 2, as is with most sequels of successful shows/movies, is that they will loosen the creative grip too much and let too many "first draft" ideas into the final product. Hopefully Oda retains his involvement in the same capacity as season 1.

I'd love to know how Joey feels about Jamie Lee Curtis wanting to play Kureha? (That is, for those who don't know, in part because Chopper is her favourite character and she's too old, in her words, to play Nico Robin as much as she wishes she could.) The only thing that I didn't like about this live action is that it appears they killed Merry cause he never appears again after being dropped into the well.

The Garp/Marine plotline was something Steven Maeda (the other showrunner, the main showrunner is Matt Owens, he's the real fan) pushed for and had to convince Oda to do. Maeda comes from a TV background so he said he needed something to add stakes to the story and to basically give the characters in A plot (strawhats) a breather. I personally didn't like it, but a lot of people who never watched OP did it, and so did you apparently so all is well.

My hope is that the next seasons get even better due to cost-savings. Like, yeah they spent a lot of money per episode in season 1, but I think a lot of that money was for things that they can save in later seasons like the Going Merry, costumes, contracts for access to land for filming, etc. If they save enough money on those kinds of things but spend about the same or more in later seasons, then that could mean that they’ll be able to spend more money on good CGI and fight scenes.

Probably not, most of the screens and props can’t be reused other than the Merry and a few costumes. The Baratie restaurant and Arlington park is used once and it’s mostly gone. OP is fun because it’s constantly giving us new scenes and islands on the journey, not because it’s reusing stuff from before. The success also meant that actors will negotiate for higher salaries and increase production costs.

In Germany the Voice actor from Luffy was in charge of the whole German Voice setup. He got all still alive original voice actors in too so it has way more authenticity that way too.

Im so glad you enjoyed it Joey. I think what makes a successful adaptation is the involvement of Oda and the sheer love and dedication of the directors/ producers who are huge one piece fans themselves.

I watched like 50 or so eps of one piece a few years back and gave up, the animation and its length just wasn't it for me. But the live action brought me back in and it is so good! I am now getting back into the anime as well!

had the same problem with the animation it wasn't good for me so even if the story was, animation was a big turn off. Which maybe is why I enjoyed the live action so much the story is there and the visuals are good even tho it's more realistic. I read that the Anime only gets good animation in episode 600 no way I'll watch 599 episodes of bad animation. Probably will watch the live action and where it ends, after all the seasons I hope it gets, continue the Anime from there, producers want to make six seasons at least and twelve if netflix let's them keep going. With 6 seasons I think it gets closer to when One Piece got good animation so it'll be less painful

@accel_boost4752 the anime has bad animation all the way, it's only in the latest arc where the animation is better on average, like 900 episodes in, before there are obviously highs and lows but it's mostly bad, one of the worse animations in any big name anime, definitely the worst between naruto and bleach, naruto and bleach can get really impressive, one piece NEVER do that.

@@symphonixbladesThat's the worst idea imaginable lmao The animation is old but not bad also gets better as it goes on It'll take decades to make And the LA skips most stuff so u would still need to start from the beginning

@@royalfun1031 not really. Tower of God Anime also skips stuff from Webtoon for example. And I continued the Webtoon where the anime left of in S1. Some things that were skipped in the anime I stil understood them without reading from the beginning. So for One Piece I believe I can be able to understand it if I continue where the live action leaves when it ends

Joey is right, it’s the best way to get into it. I was always reluctant for that exact reason (the sheer volume), and now the four box sets of manga will be here Thursday.

It was actually confirmed by Oda himself that a 2nd season is confirmed, so it is definitely happening.

If you want to check out some more live action series that are real good, two I would recommend are: Great Teacher Onizuka (1998) and Nodame Cantabile

I hope in season 2 they take their time a little bit more exploring the characters/places they visit and I also hope they go until the end of the Arabasta arc which would take about 10 episodes instead of 8 in season 1 assuming each episode length is similar to season 1

I love the interviews with the cast. They did amazing as their characters and act like their characters in real life. I was iffy when I first heard about the live action but it was really good! My best friend who's not really into anime keeps seeing tiktoks about Buggy and the live action. She told me that she wants to start watching both the Live action and the anime just for Buggy since she loves clowns

No one believed it would break the mould for a live action but it sort of delivered. Honestly I preferred some of the live action moments to the anime moments. Like the action scene with Mihawk and Zoro, the live action felt like it had real weight to it. I hope that season 2 remains consistent with the quality of season 1.

live action has weight to it ? Nahh, the ending of the fight was akward. Zoro holding up his zword to the sky ? In the anime it makes sense and looks cool cause Zoro is far from luffy, on a rowboat while luffy is on a platform. It like, hey look at me over here luffy. I'm never gonna lose again ! While in the live action, mf is literally next to him. It looks so goofy. Mihawk is great in the live-action but the fight is not better then the animated one. Especially Mihawk stopping zoro's attacking with the tiny dagger. It doesn't feel right in the live action version. The rest of the fight is great but overall it's definitely not better then the animated one. You should rewatch the animated one rlly.
