I walked out on a new year last year, as people were celebrating entering into a new year it was exact 1 hour into a new year he almost killed me with my girl, but I thank God I manage to excape, what hurts me to date is that my baby girl usually asks "mum bona daddy alikua ananifinika na pillow Ile siku nashindwa kupumua" this word uwa zinanihurt sana his aim was auwe mtoto then me next but I remember that day I had told God to show me the way and intervienne because I was in a toxic marriage, he used to beat me adi naogopa kwenda hosy juu sasa ntaambiana nn, atimes mad at myself on why I allowed someone to torture me like that besides the abuse also totured my baby mentally, but all in all I thank God I moved on with my baby Gods grace has been sufficient to us I secured a job in Dubai late last year at least I can pay fee for her and give her a good life. That’s why I left my very abusive hubby. He stabbed me , I was a punching bag and thank God for my house help then, otherwise would be 6 feet under.I knew it was time. Applied green card, by Gods grace I won. I left with my two kids to USA and left the abuser behind and for Good. 10 years God has been so faithful. I had to build my self esteem again, love myself again. Was hard to forgive but I had to.Big up to all women who emerge strong after abuse.

Florence, while I acknowledge that women have been the traditional victims of GBV, men go through a lot of this abuse today but they can't talk about it in public due to stigma. This is a societal issue and spouses need to be sensitized about mutual respect. Negative conflict and violence doesn't solve relationship problems.

The worst thing that can happen to a person is to have their pain undermined. To hear people say abuse is normal. Where I come from I've observed alot of abuse in my home and in neighbouring homes but the women don't leave because of 1. What people will say 2. What will become of my kids 3. Narcissist personalities know who to go for. They can be men or women and one major charateristic that they have is that they do not want anyone or anything that takes attention away from themselves. Abuse starts when children are born to the couple or the victim chooses to advance themselves via education or business or are earning more money. That part of arrogance, and assuming that all is well and as a woman you are not going anywhere, you permanently deserve his abuse- “the Valentine phone call”, the person who asked her when she was straight from hospital, she should go to see the husband in prison, he is still the husband”. Hello Abbi. Hello Lynn. So proud of you both. Greetings from Geneva. I admit I haven’t been in your situation Abbi, but I nearly was long time ago with some guy then my aunt’s voice came in my head. (The guy did touch me but he was hoping up and down like a baboon beating his chest) my aunt had told me that if you feel threatened when a man raises his voice, run and don’t ever go back because it will come to nasty bruises. I escaped and no amount of pleading got me back. My aunt RIp was a Catholic nun and a counselor in the villages. I was lucky and helped someone close too years younger with the same advise. Now with two grown up kids, boy and girl I pass on that same message. Would love to meet up next time when in the UK. Thank you for sharing.

For me after 6 years of marriage and 2 kids I knew it might not work and stopped giving birth. I hung in there and after 20 years we parted ways. There was no physical violence but it wasn't worth it and I realized he was using me all along. He married my money, not me.

It's true, abusers are charming to other people so that when you're hurt no one will believe. I remember my violent and tyrant father when selling harvest he would add soooooo much to neighbors yet we were not allowed to take a portion to eat. We grew and harvested much then he sold everything and my mum had to buy the same for us to survive. Sad❗

Abi, thank you for your story. I was married for Three years and divorced on the Fourth year. I don't believe that there is anything good thing about an abusive man. The thing that's unfortunate is that women accept abuse as normal. Kindness is normal And abuse is unacceptably a No! No. Same as in my case, he started the assault when I got a baby. That's then that I decided to go home, but as you say, going home was not going to help. The assaults continued until I decided to lay a charge of assault. He received a suspended sentence. Generally it was said that he'd kill me, hence expectations were that I'd withdraw the charges, thus as soon as we came from Court, I challenged him to start killing me. He said that he wouldn't kill me because he loved me. That's when things escalated to death threats until it turned out to be organizing assassination which failed because people in the Residence that we were in became more alert that my life was in danger such that when the potential murderer attempted to open my door, the whole neighborhood was woken up. That's how I got out of that marriage and eventually got divorced. I've never looked back since then. I can't believe how strong women that are used to abuse are. I couldn't take a slap on my face. I would be fighting back so much that the in the fight, I'd hold him there And he'd lose the energy thus giving me the opportunity to run. I don't know how I could ever stand repeated assaults as our people who have endured a violent home. I have no regrets in having left him because after divorce, he got married while I lived my life to the fullest. He got a woman who made his life hell. God was And still is very good to me. I brought up my child his wife was having her own life right in front of him. When he reacted to that, she came back and stabbed him to the extent that he ended up at the high care unit. Coming back from the Hospital they never stayed together again as his family threatened to kill her. He stayed with another woman And never had good life until he died Eight years after our divorce. Never be violent to your partner And never allow anyone to be abusive to you. Abuse and violence are very bad in a Relationship. Keep off and Divorce as soon as possible before he/she psychologically controls and manipulate you.

Abbie is a great strong woman indeed. I admire her. Her story is a wake up call for me. That the then husband of hers was a demonised person. Her story actually has caused me to look at what is happening to me. In Abbie's case, at least there was a relationship between her and the evil man compared to my story. I am being abused by a man I had never had a relationship with. I don't have friends, he destroyed the friendships and even destroyed my relationships with my siblings. This is a man of high social standing and quite influential. By the grace of God I live. Yes, the Christian principles tell us to forgive those who do us wrong, but how do you forgive someone whom you don't even talk to, but abuses you through using other people who live near you? Forgiveness gives people a fresh start. It is a means of freeing the offender from the shackles of being abusive or of doing wrong to others, whatever is the case may be. It expresses hope that there is more to the person than their faults and failures. At the same time forgiveness frees the wronged person or the forgiving person from possible prison of anger, hatred and probably revenge. Forgiveness as well offers hope to the offended, making her or him realise that there is more to her or his heart than harbouring wounds. The cycle of evil begetting evil is broken by forgiveness, but in my case I find it hard to forgive the man because I don't know how I can do it. I tried to forgive the man even though I have never had any relationship with him and that he is robbing me my freedom to live in peace, I offered him my forgiveness. What happened after that, made me to realise that I was dealing with a person who was beyond reasoning with. He, instead of embracing the forgiveness and realise that he was in the wrong and move on, he doubled his abuse to me. And for his convenience and unfortunate for me, the person he uses is my next door neighbour. Life is unbearable for me. I think I have now reached a breaking point. I can't take it anymore. After listening to Abbie's story, it was a wake up call, if it means sleeping in the streets, I am prepared to do so to free myself from the abuse. Thank you for sharing this story. I am now hopeful that I can get out of this situation and have freedom and my life back.
