It always sucks when watching a reaction video and the people are not reacting to what is happening but trying so hard to make comments about how they don't react to things about the movie - for example - when Samara comes out of the TV and the fat dude comments "i've seen that effect before..." - uhh yeah - you really sold the reaction buddy...

Japanese scary/horror films are known for NOT explaining everything. Adds to the frustration, anxiety & unknown. The Grudge epitomizes that!

Im pretty sure they did explain what happened from news reports to news clippings etc. But honestly the horror monster is more terrifying when they dont explain as much of their backstory. The unknown is more scarier.

The character of Samara (Sadako in the original Japanese film) is based on the mythological onryo (怨霊), or vengeful spirit. Key aspects of their design include long, black, unkempt hair, tattered white funerial garb, and pale skin with black or dark blue eye makeup (borrowed from Kabuki theater). Onryo-inspired characters can also be found in numerous other J-horror films, such as Ju-On: The Grudge, or in video games, such as Fatal Frame, Killer Instinct (2013) and Guilty Gear.

You realize there's a LOT of cultures with the concept of a vengeful spirit, right, including young female ones? This could be based off any of them; nothing unique to japan. Kind of weird that you're taking the time to publicize the exclusive heritage of a very common concept. lol Japan does not own this concept. All they did was redo a copyrighted drama-horror, not redo a copyrighted creature concept. lol

Have the DVD of this. Coolest thing was a "Secret Menu Easter Egg" that you could move the selection to an off screen highlight that would play the "Cursed Movie" from start to finish, then after a slight pause would play the sound of a telephone ringing with Surround Sound in rear speakers that made it sound like it was in your room. Totally valid! I was 23 when I saw this movie on HBO in January 2004. This movie freaked me out for years. For example, whenever I'd start a movie on VHS, I'd put the tape in and press play first BEFORE turning the television on to avoid the TV snow. There's a well at the back of my grandmother's house. All my visits were planned around daylight because leaving her house at night with the well in sight freaked me out. In 2007, I rented this movie, thinking I'd outgrown my fear. When my roommate and I returned to our apartment, I left the DVD in the freaking trunk and returned it the next day. A year later, I thought, "okay, you're 28 and "mature" now; you can do this. I bought this movie from Blockbuster. Got home, left it in the trunk, and got a refund the next day. I really enjoy this movie, and it's frustrating that it still creeps me out.

If someone else has already said this, apologies for repeating but… something I love about eastern horror vs western horror is that, in many ways, western horror monsters have rules. Silver kills werewolves, you have to invite a vampire in, kill a zombie by destroying the brain (usually). However, eastern monsters and dangerous spirits don’t have as many, if any rules. They can show up whenever, and wherever and their genuine nature/powers/origin, etc. aren’t known. There are also a lot more entities where encountering them is guaranteed death, which is the same feeling that the video in this movie gives. Anyway, loving the channel!

I saw the original Japanese version first on a bootleg VHS haha But I will say that despite loving this film very much after seeing it in the theaters, the girl in the original is much much creepier coming out of the well. She slithers towards the tv while the American version has her just walk. Far creepier. I don't scare easy but this was close for me. Keep up the Halloween theme. Gore Verbinski master of scenery. I only know him from PotC, but not surprised he directed this eerie compelling movie.

I was 11 in 02! Hasn’t seen the movie yet but I remember the hype! Gen Z totally missed out! This movie made a HUGE impact. Even jump started the VHS franchise!

Technically this video isn't dangerous at all, as you could just keep showing new people the video, then telling them to do the same. So long as people keep it up, no one will ever die.

Because of watching The Ring & The Ring 2 when I was in the 5th grade I actually had a fear of the dark/looking in mirrors for a whole year.
