MY IDEAL NWR ~ Episode 7: Duck & Diesel

I forgot to check my head code reference sheet while drawing diesel. I was just trying to give me more unique head code, but accidentally gave him the “express goods or livestock” head code. Since I severely doubt a small shunter like diesel would be pulling anything related to the express, I guess he’s preparing to pull livestock in this image?

In my AU, Duck was originally built with the number 5764, it's the only 5700 I could find in the BR Database that was built in 1929 and was stationed at Old Oak Common. At some point Duck and the real 5741 were both at Swindon for an overhaul and the workmen accidentally mixed up the numbers. When Duck realized he had already returned to his post at Paddington and he didn’t really see it as an issue. Aside from that, there’s nothing I'd change about Duck.

My AU of Duck was he was 5766, one of the actual 57xx class to work around London Paddington. His arrival to Sodor was when 5741, Archibald, got Thomas dragged behind Gordon's first Sudrian Express train in 1923. He became Arelsburgh Pilot until the arrival of Dennis in 1966 during the BR NWR split after the NWR/BR Lawsuit. As such, Duck has been a hero. During the incident of Close Shave, Diesel had convinced the trucks to push Duck into the Crosby Oil Refinery to destroy Duck beyond repair. However, due to a passenger train, Duck made a controlled crash into the infamous barbershop. Diesel was sent to assist alongside Derick and Harvey, the two works engines at the time, and basically outed himself. He got sent to BR and threw off their whole subtle dieselization plan for the Northwest Region of British Rail. As for Diesel, he's still an 08. His number was never taken down as he was scrapped shortly after leaving the NWR's facilities at Carnforth.

For Duck in my own take: He keeps both his GWR number and NWR number based on MidlandsEngine’s take on Duck and Oliver on DeviantArt. As for the sandboxes: he gets them after the close shave incident. For Diesel: I like to imagine Diesel as one of the Class 08s that were built in Swindon as a way to rub in Duck’s face.

In my AU, Diesel would Return to Sodor as Vicarstown Station Pliot in 1967, to replace The Lady of Vicarstown (Who is My AU of Lady) and remains as it to this day, and if I ever gave him a real name, it would be Bruce (And you might know where I got it from, don’t you?)

I’ve watched that series and I do think it is a brilliant character study of Diesel. I definitely agree with his idea of how diesel should be characterized. The difference with my version is, I think he should have a character where he finally discovers who he is rather than pretending that he is not an individual.

He has a yellow dome in my AU, just like in the William Middleton illustrations of Three Railway Engines I have no particular reason why I chose that, I just think it looks neat
