They use various ways to convince you that something is wrong. What I've seen from Kitboga's streams: Win+R, type cmd, press OK, type either netstat (oh no established connections), assoc (theres GUIDs in that list), or tree (so much output), and press enter. And that whole process is often excruciatingly slow because they somehow have to use some sort of spelling alphabet they made up on the spot.

My favorite is having the scammers remote into the my sacrificial virtual machine running windows XP and trying to use the debug tools to modify sites to show that I am hacked.
