@@drugfreebobbyIt's a web app. It works on basically any device on the planet that comes with a modern web browser. Whether or not it will run good depends on what browser you use and how new your device is. An iPhone 13 should be more than powerful enough to play everything in at least the free tier, especially if you use Chrome or Brave or any other Chromium based browser. Safari should work as well, but won't be as fast.

Bro, I literally just got my Backbone controller & I’m honestly blown away by the gaming capabilities. Feeling like I didn’t need to spend $$ on Disney Dreamlight Valley & Stardew Valley, Shovel Knight Dig, etc. on my Switch… I have Apple Arcade & I just downloaded Afterplay like yesterday!! It was mad easy to download roms & start playing. (I’m playing the Fire Emblem game for GBA rn actually! Never played it before tbh) Got mad love for Nintendo in my heart, but I feel like half my most played games run great on my iPhone 15 Pro. & Xbox Cloud gaming *hasn’t* been terrible for me! And my very normally priced phone easily runs stuff like Genshin with very acceptable performance, it's pretty crazy. I thought I'd have to shell out like a 1000 bucks to be satisfied, but for the occasional supplementary gaming session on my balcony etc., this is incredible value and convenience. I just wish phones came with power and volume buttons in places where they'd serve as gamepad buttons so you don't need a peripheral as much, I'm surprised they haven't leaned into that as much with the rise of games such as the aforementioned Genshin. I also miss the popularity of the mechanism present in PSP Go etc., makes the phone thicker and complicates cooling, but I'd get tons of use out of a panel that has a gamepad and an actual keyboard I can feel.

Man... I remember playing PS1 emulators on my OG iphone SE several years back... The leaps in tech we've taken are absolutely astonishing, in that we can play such huge, demanding games on such small, efficient hardware. Considering both give you NES, SNES, N64, All the Gameboys, DS, and even the Sega Genesis (Ignited includes genesis, master, and game gear for free). Another thing to consider is that when the EU also forces Apple’s hand to allow sideloading apps, retroarch is a perfect solution for the iPhone. I was recently in the same position wanting to use my phone as a gaming system without installing shady custom firmware. I was able to find a workaround to allow sideloading (admittedly still kinda shady) and played systems up to the Gamecube using retroarch without issue.

Just a heads up for anyone interested. Backbone silently updated their Backbone One to v2. This v2 of course ships out of the gate with iPhone 15 (Pro) support, but also made a few quality of life changes. It has interchangeable and removable magnetic adapters to fit more phones, and the brackets at the front have also been raised. It basically eliminated all the issues I had with the v1, the iPhone 15 Pro Max fits perfectly, with a case as well. Highly recommend it.

@speedracer123222

What’s cool is if you sideload on iOS, you get pretty close to how many consoles android can work good performance. You talking about switch emulation is interesting because iOS now has a switch emulator that’s a port of yuzu. Since iPhones don’t have as much ram as androids. Really the 15 pro and above can only run switch with its 8gb ram. The app is called sudachi and it’s in its infancy and is not even a month old yet so it has problems currently but is getting better. I was able to atleast run Mario odyssey at a ok frame rate but crashes at opening door or beating boss because of hitting a memory limit which might be a memory leak of some kind. iPads with 8gb ram and above can run it too. I belive that started on m1 devices.

I think it would be a good thing for apple to be more involved as a gaming platform. They certainly have powerful enough hardware. It's just a completely different infrastructure to the x86 stuff like windows and most consoles. And that takes it's own dedicated development time and development staff that know how to work on that. Arm64 is basically going to have to prove it can consistently run anything that can boot up on x86 and likely have some sort of emulation of x86, if that is even a possibility (I have an extremely basic and miniscule understanding of CPU architecture so this is as best as I understand the landscape), so development can be a smoother process all around and that can entice more development for Arm64 based hardware.

I'm basically having the same issue: I'm positively drowning in devices like 3rd party gaming handhelds as well as unmodded and modded official ones. I take one with me whenever I go on any trip that takes more than an hour but hardly ever end up using it. The fact that my phone can emulate almost any game with up to Game Cube/PS2 graphics without issue and that there's also tons of offline playable premium games on phone, from indies to official ports of almost every older Squeenix Game and even some old AAA titles makes it hard to justify carrying these dedicated devices around, let alone buying any more of them. Phone emulation takes maybe an extra 20-60 seconds to launch a game but a phone pairs with any Bluetooth and USB-C controller as well as keyboards, I'm already wearing the headphones for it and it's smaller than even the DS lite with an infinitely better screen. It's just part of your holy trinity of items when you go out - keys, wallet, phone - so you have it even without any luggage or carry-on bag. When I do use a gaming handheld it's usually on the couch, not on the road.

Man I remember emulating FFX(PS1) on my Samsung Galaxy S3 over 10 yrs ago. I've been on/off iPhone/Android (mostly Apple). We need more emulation for sure

You just described the exact reason I sold my retroid pocket 3. I just don’t take the time to change from my phone to the handheld EXCEPT for the only handhelds I use and own still- old Nintendo, my original gameboy advance I modded, sometimes a gbc, and even a ds sometimes

Only reason a docked Deck would run a game slower docked is due to it running the game at a higher resolution than it was on the handheld's native display. If you go into the settings and crank the Deck down to 720p, you'll get those frames back. Just a resolution jump from 1280x800 to 1920x1080 is a doubling of total pixels that handheld is having to push to the display, if the GPU is the primary bottleneck then having it push twice the pixels per frame can lead to half the framerate. The Steam Deck having more PC DNA than anything, will choose the highest resolution both the console and display are compatible with, rather than what is probably best for game performance

I've definitely been playing games more on my s24 ultra since they made it powerful enough. I have an iPhone 15 too I've been messing with the delta app on. Pretty solid experience.

Great video! I’ve been looking to retrofit my iPhone 13 mini plus MagSafe battery as a on-the-go gaming machine. All the other browser based programs I’ve seen require a controller which defeats the purpose. For my daily flow, I must keep packing light, and I do not want another thing to carry or charge. Touchscreen work just fine for retro JPG’s (which is what I play)

You can run apps like this natively on an iPhone without jailbreaking it but you would have to use a sideloader like scarlet with no pc or on sideloadly with a pc. Both of these options aren’t great because you can only have a certain amount of time until you have to redownload the app. You can run the NES all the way up to the nds for free and no ads. There is also dolphin emulator but you would need a jailbreak for jit support 😐

You don't need to redownload the app. If Sideloadly is running it refreshes the apps automatically over wifi, with no loss of games or data. You can also enable JIT without jailbreaking but to be fair it doesn't work on the latest versions of iOS.

There is always a chance something could happen with Steam on iPhone after the EU forces sideloading to be available on iOS, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I use a Galaxy Phone with Samsung DEX and a type-C hub. For portable use I pair a dual shock 4 and put retroarch into forced multi-window mode, hold it in portrait mode and just use the DS4 while holding the phone with my back fingers.

Considering the RE4R only runs at 1080p/60fps on a PS5 without using upscaling, 720p/30fps on a phone isn’t bad. The PS5 GPU is like 12tflops whereas the top cell phones are around 5tflops on Android or about 4tflops on the iPhone.
