My Journey from Nurse to Massage Therapist | Is Massage Therapy worth it?

I’ve been a nurse for 6 years, I was a CNA for 8 years prior to that. It definitely drains me giving my patients the best I can, but I always leave work feeling as though I didn’t do enough and could have done more. It’s very heavy carrying these feelings and my self care is nonexistent. I’m enrolling in Massage Therapy school next week. It’s time to love myself while being able to focus on my clients needs in a peaceful environment. It feels life changing and long overdue!

I get that feeling! You can still work in the medical field as a massage therapist, such as oncology massage. So many ways to specialize.

Quite glad I found this video! I am a nurse as well, only have one year experience, but that was enough for me to finally decide that I would rather prioritise my health and prioritise having a healthy work-life balance. I did wrestled with the decision for a bit though, but now I feel it's best to quit sooner than later. Like you, I very much enjoy helping others and supporting them to feel their best and yes the fact that you already have lots of experience with good communication and interpersonal skills from nursing is already an advantage point and a desirable asset for massage therapy. For quite some time, I fancied massage therapy and the holistic side to health and well-being and now I will just go for it. With how things are going in the world today, it is far better and more sensible to have a career that gives you the option to work for a company or independently. So with keeping that in mind, I do feel massage therapy is worth it, I feel there would always be a need for it. And either way, you can always keep it as something to do on the side if you end up deciding later on that you rather do something else. Wishing the best of luck to you and your career.

The more you work at it and the greater your desire. You will get there. We’ve pulled opposite cards lovely lady. I’ve been an LMT since 2000 but just recently graduated RN school. I have some fantastic clientele that I’ll keep for years. It sounds like you are on the right path for yourself

I've wanted to be a massage therapist for awhile. I know how healing it can be and I believe it can really help people. I was nervous to become one because I'm a guy and this one massage therapist said guys don't do that well in massage... but I've finally decided I don't care and am going to do it anyway

There are some taboos that male massage therapist go through, however you would just have to make sure you are VERY ethical and don't cross any lines , otherwise male therapist do pretty well, also you can do stretching or sports massage , those are often done with fully dressed clients if you are concerned

I play classical guitar and you need nails on right hand. I can keep them pretty short and angled towards only one side ( like there is more nail on one end than the other)

@@nursed2recovery I practically lived at the nursing home I worked at during the beginning of the pandemic. And it’s still short staffed. Still getting train wreck admissions. Still being made the supervisor of the building, and working the skilled unit, and falls, and codes and staffing issues, and crazy families… the list goes on and on. Now I just need to be patient, leave properly and let the peace come. I’m just grateful for massage because so many nurses are feeling trapped. I feel sorry for them.

I understand completely, but do what feels right for you, also I always suggest before switching careers and going to school, go job hunting for that career online in your area and see what the adverage income is. Because jumping from full time to contract work can be like being a fish out of water initially. Thank you for watching and I know you'll do great.

I am currently a CNA that just got accepted into an LPN program, and I am considering changing paths to massage therapy… As someone with anxiety, I feel like the more low stress environment of massage therapy might be a better route for me, but I’m worried that if I go into therapy I’ll regret not becoming a nurse and if I go into nursing I’ll regret not being a therapist. Do you have any words of advice, in general, in regards to my concerns

Personally, I would suggest getting your LPN license first. Then, get your massage license later. There are so many options of places to work in healthcare . I feel like nursing programs, in general, are great to just get out of the way. Also, if you can just go straight to your RN

I have been considering going to massage school for several years now, and just as I was getting closer to pull the trigger, and as my best friend went to school and is now completed his program and doing fairly well for himself. I actually ended up fracturing my proximal phalanx of my pinky finger and it healed with a malunion. I had to get several x-rays and CT scans and I feel like my hand has a lot more information and arthritis already setting in. However there is a part of me that thinks maybe Doing that massage therapy program could actually be better for my hand in someway. Because I am getting more exercise for it. I’ve always enjoyed learning about natural alternative remedies through herbalism as well as essential oils. I know they have different techniques where you can limit the use of your hands and also use other parts of your body like your elbows or even bamboo etc. i’m not sure I have such a good opportunity to go to school in Texas because it’s so close to where I’m at. Plus it’s a very affordable program. I just don’t know if I’m ready to commit to that yet. I would look at doing massage more like a side hustle part-time on the evenings and weekends around a full or part-time job at hopefully offers benefits

Hi Dan, Massage is a very physical career. I know some schools may allow you to shadow a class before fully applying. I would suggest doing that before making that commitment, especially with an injury.

As a RN have you looked into Holistic Registered Nurse. I'm a licensed massage therapist that specializes in pain management massage since 2006. I'm wanting to start my journey becoming a RN starting with the good ol general studies. Im thinking of doing the ADN. Any advice for a LMT wanting to begin the next chapter as a RN.

I have worked with an Holistic Doctor and enjoyed it , also my advice would be find a good program, and study study study lol There are so many things that you can do in Nursing ,so just know you are NOT limited to the hospital . You got this , good luck!

Thank you for watching. Most of the well paying LMT jobs are commission based. The chains are more likely to do hourly. So it all depends on where you decide to work and how they have their payroll set.

Hello, before leaving nursing all together have you tried working in other aspects of nursing. Such as physician offices or even in a med spa. There are way more positions outside of the hospital.

Great video. Comparing LPN Nursing School to Massage School, which was harder? Or were they equally challenging. I was thinking the A&P learned from nursing school would’ve made it easier to refamiliarize vs learning for the first time. Do you ever exchange free massages with LMT friends or co-workers? That would be a great perk.

Technically LPN was harder , however it did help some in massage, but there were also things in massage school I did have to study for. Trading massages is a thing, however I rather just pay someone , because I just want my massage and to go home lol

Hi, it depends. Are you just going to be an owner? You can own a spa and hire massage therapists. However if you want to do deep tissue, swedish etc you would have to get a massage license. Hope this helps.

To be completely honest, it depends on what you are trying to accomplish and your drive. If your 81k is guaranteed with set hours then I definitely can't say you would get that amount right away in massage. Not to discourage you but I definitely would NOT recommend diving in and expect that much out the gate.
