I made this in response to people asking me how I keep my aim steady. It also can help if your joystick is starting to get worn out and is no longer accurate.

It is important to realize what is causing your specific problem of wobblyness, because joysticks are different and users are different. The main difference between controllers is the range of movement. The larger the range of movement is, the more precisely the user can control small changes in joystick position. Second difference is smoothness of motion, which has a mechanical component and an electrical component. This determines how accurately you can control the stick movement. Mechanical issues include non-continuous friction ("sticky" stick or rudder) and large clearances ("clunky" feel, large mechanical deadzones); electrical issues include badly behaving potentiometres (spiking, loss of range, loss of calibration, etc.). Third difference is whether the joystick includes a twist-handle axis for rudder control or not. The advantage of twist handle joysticks is that there's no need for large and expensive rudder pedals, but as far as precision and accuracy goes, a two-axis stick and rudder pedals are going to beat a twist-handle joystick in almost every context. If the main problem is that the range of joystick's motion is too small, then the biggest thing to reduce wobblyness on the central control area is to increase the non-linearity setting, so that at the centre area moving the controller for 10 units to one direction only returns 5 units to the game axis, which expands the range of motion on the area where you most need the accuracy. The downside of this is that the control range on the *edges* of the stick movement is *twice as sensitive* as with fully linear settings. This is not normally an issue, however it *can* lead to problems when trying to fly at the edge of stall, and suddenly you find that a very small difference in stick position results in a very large change in control surface position. Mechanical and electrical problems making the stick's movement non-fluid, and non-continuous can be solved by reducing the sensitivity. Sensitivity in most games (including War Thunder) is basically a temporal average filter, which basically acts as a "damper" on how fast the control input can change. This filters out any discontinuities from unintentionally jerky stick movements or slight electrical "spikes" or gaps in the potentiometre, and it can be a very useful tool to use. The downside to this is that your ability to *intentionally* move the controls as fast as possible is *also* hindered - which means, decreasing the sensitivity too much is actually also going to hinder your ability to control the aircraft. That said, non-linearity and sensitivity settings are very much a personal thing and pretty much connected to whatever joystick you happen to be using and what you're getting good results with. Twist handle sticks' main issue can be that it's almost impossible to properly isolate rudder inputs from aileron/elevator inputs - moving the stick and keeping rudder input steady can be very challenging, and steadying the rudder takes concentration away from manipulating the elevator and ailerons. While some fine-tuning of aiming is done with rudder (though not the best way to do it), aileron and elevator are the primary flight control inputs; that is what you mostly use to bank and turn the aircraft. Rudder pedals do this naturally - stick movements do not affect rudder, and rudder movements do not affect the stick position. Rudder pedals also offer a far greater range of movement than a twist handle rudder - even when you're manipulating them with your feet which are much less precise than your hand.

OMG finally a combat wobble video!!! My 1st flight (arcade) had mouse aim, managed to get myself 6 fighter kills and 3 ground targets. 2nd match, switch to manual control and couldn't even hit stationary ground target. Plane wobble was so bad I thought my controller was broken. After about 8 hours adjusting sensitivity, I got the wobble down to a manageable level. Wish I had found your video before that. damn youtube algorithm wouldn't bring you up in my searches. Separate note, Realized mouse aim is OP as hell and needs a major nerf. Or its own server separate from manual control pilots.

As said, an older video but very helpful none the less. I’m on PS4 and have the rudder pedals with my hotas 4, but the Info up to the calibration part is relevant. As he stated, those settings worked for him. I’m tweaking mine a bit to suit my comfort. Nothing a little time in test flight won’t handle. Thanks for posting!!

I cant think joystick wobble comes purely from the pitch sensitivity. I think it has to do with nonlinearity settings- I can fly as stable as your 0% pitch with my 90+% and ~2.0 nonlinear settings with my 2011 thrustmaster t16000m.maybe it's just muscle memory,too? I think players need to adjust their response settings(as you show).sensitivity does only move control surfaces at a slower speed. But note the guy who can move his plane faster has an advantage in dogfight. Assuming one's joy is centering itself: Generally,the real wobble comes from the plane rocking up and down because of too low sensitivity( input is delayed). It does not need 100% but useful for those who 'want to to move their plane faster'. I m one of these people. Salute

They do help Wobble, A lot. I am trying to get into SIM, and I am having the issue of fishtailing trying to get on target. So I've been around looking at settings and found that 2.8 Nonlin and .9/8 multiplier on the elevator makes that fishtailing A LOT better. For the more sensitive planes, there's nothing you can do about it but use the stick a little less aggressivly, or just don't fly it.
@commodorejones8044
@commodorejones8044 6 жыл бұрын
It's really a personall prefrence. Mess around with the Nonlin, and multiplier settings until you are satisfied with how your planes flies. There is no surefire solution to any one issue. Just set it up until you are comfortable.

The big issue with joystick wobble in my opinion is that auto trim doesn't auto trim the plane. In full control when your plane is trimmed for its speed you don't wobble but in arcade or realistic where you play against mouse aimers, the auto trim should keep the plane stable how you set it it unless your stall. But it doesn't, the plane tend to climb which when you release for the shot makes the plane wobble.

Oh man, finally I found it! I had been looking for this video, well at least the 'old and worn out" part and how you set the deadzone. My 3d pro I have been having trouble with it. It pretty much acts the same as I see yours doing so I guess that is what it is. Might want to add some keywords here like deadzone and wore out and such to help, as there is basically nothing on youtube at least about how to handle that issue. Thanks man.

a 0% sens player will always lose to a 100%. the bounce is because joystick sucks in both sensors AND the length, the length can never be fixed by software unless you get an extender for the shaft. Non-linearity is basically a cheap 'fix' for short home-pc joysticks.

What i like to do with the controller 🎮 is: To control the roll and pitch with the left stick, and have the yaw on the same left stick, but holding "B" to enable it. That way i can fly normally with the Left Stick, and when i need to aim accurately, i hold a B to only control the yaw and the pitch. I also found this useful for the Logitech Attack 3 Joystick, because it doesn't have a another axis for Rudder controls.

Nice, It would be great if the game allowed you to have Jstick settings for each individual plane, I find that the rudder authority differs wildly between planes. However, my sweet spot is 56% sensitivity for Yaw & Pitch and 100% for roll. (I have an 11 year old X52)

Hey William! Good to see new content on your channel. Speaking of which, is nearing 1K subscribers. I don't know how much it means to you as you mostly stream, but hey, a milestone is a milestone nonetheless. And about streaming; Did you take a break off of KZbin and Streaming? Because I haven't been getting notifications for the past month or two from your channel. I don't know if it is on my end or you just stopped suddenly? And finally, about the video, as I said, always great to see a new one from you. And this one especially, as I just started using a new gamepad for Simulator (my 3D Extreme broke sadly), so after playing around with different settings with the new gamepad, I stopped playing simulator for a while. I was getting frustrated by the shitty aim I had with that thing. For example, with the He 112 B-2 (it is the premium one), which happens to be my best scoring aircraft and one of my favorite to fly. I used to have 60 kills and 24 deaths with it (pretty good in my records) with it. this weekend it went to 65 kills and 47 deaths. Yeah... that's bad. But I think this video will help me until I get the new 3D Extreme. Really love that thing. So I was having fun over the weekend, and back to school and all that jazz. How you doin' William?

Does the graphics card quality affect the wobble effect? This game is totally unplayable for me due to the planes wobbling so much. I used to play Warbirds many years ago and had no wobble problem whatsoever using an older computer and my Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro. This game looks totally worth the expense of a better GPU and new joystick, but not if the planes are still going to wobble.

No, but it does make you think about how you're going to fly since your plane wont be flopping around the sky. For most people I tell em to lower it all to zero, then adjust up to your taste. but leave the rudder as low as you can deal with.
