Welcome to another War Thunder guide! In today's video, we will be taking a look at the crew skills for aircraft. Much like tank crew skills, these increase the general performance of your vehicle. This is one of the most crucial mechanics in War Thunder, and it's important to understand what they do. To help you out, I explain all the crew skills and each of their parameters. Sorry if my you can't understand what I say or if my voice sounds different during parts of the video, this was recorded over a period of 4 weeks. I'm planning on getting a new microphone soon, so the voice overs should sound a lot better in the next video.

True, but their DPS is still really low. Twin .50 cals can only do so much. Only really starts becoming effective if you have quad .50s or some form of autocannon.

@Steven Yapp Don't bother. I did and it's not worth it. Gaijin nerfed them so they only start shooting at 210m, use manual gunners. They are destructive if maxed and someone closes in on you

3 Things to note: Mechanics skill carries over to ground vehicles as well. Reload speed is bugged it seems and actually only affects in air reloads. Rearming on the airfield is always the Repair Speed instead, regardless of if you're actually repairing. The only exception to this is in game modes with modular airfields where reload speed is lowered if the supply depot is damaged. Reloading turrets is only a thing in RB and AB. In Simulator your turrets have a fixed ammo count and cannot reload regardless of if they just a gun sticking out the side or not. Reload times varry with the caliber as well. .303's will have the lowest at 30 seconds base. .50 is 45 seconds base and 20mm is 1 minute base. You only listed the .303 reload.

AFAIK the maximum range on when turrets can fire highly depends on the plane you're flying. My b25 says .8km max range and 1.07km max tracking range. 200m is shit but 800m is pretty damn nice as I can't usually hit a target farther than 400m when trying to fly at the same time. With 3.5 precision and accuracy and a qualification my gunners are actually more effective than I am most of the time unless very close range. I wish you knew more about the g tolerance and stamina affecting aim accuracy. They don't explain it in the tool tip.

The plane has no effect on the firing range, you were looking at arcade stats vs. RB/SB stats. That being said, I've seen them fire further than 200m when I was hunting ai attackers with a He-111 H-16 frontal cannon, so I'm not convinced it's totally useless to upgrade crew accuracy and precision.

if ure lazy and want quick advice, here it is: if ure a bomber player, upgrade the 2nd window of crew skills (gunner skills) and pilot if ure in fighter, u should only upgrade pilot skills, and focus on gun maintenance, cuz dat will make ur guns be better, a bit better

Are bombers good for grinding RP until about 4.5 BR? I'm grinding US aviation tree until I hit about 4.5 so I can use a good aircraft for CAS in Ground RB. Any tips are GREATLY appreciated. I hopped in recently, haven't played in years and bombers gunners were super deadly

Bombers these days have low RP modifiers and high repair costs. There are exceptions, but I'd say you should stick to other planes. Feel free to give them a shot though, if you like them, you can use them.

You may wanna check out P-47D Thunderbolt or Hellcat, their loads are good, additionally, P-47D is a fighter but awesome for CAS

50 cal: use tracers any other gun: stealth, or if u dont know to aim (like me lol) use universal. if theres no universal, use something else similar to universal, the planes dat dont have universal belt normallyhave belts like night or something, use dat belt if u cant aim with stealth 7mm: cool to use tracers too, u wont be dealing many damage, but if u have planes with 7mm and bigger guns (italians for example) use tracers in the 7mm so u can guide ur shots easier

Repair rank is only for the hangar. Repair speed and reload speed are also for the airfield, so you should upgrade those two.

Exactly. The only thing that does is increasing your crew levels for an expert or ace crew. Basically a waste of points.

There are some fighters that have turrets. Like the USA's P-61c-1. It has a dorsal turret with 360° rotation and 90° elevation, 0° depression; armed with four 12.7mm mgs. Two AI gunners controlling the turret (one facing forward, one back) allows the turret to be used in an offensive role as well as defensive. The main armament being four 20mm cannons with 200 ammo each. Honesty, the AI gunners has gotten more kills for me then the main guns because it will start shooting long before I do. That is of course with the gunners accuracy and precision maxed out + ace.

I have a friend whom I fly with, and he has 7 plus years experience but, refuses to upgrade his crews. I, on the other hand make sure my crew(s) are fully upgraded. About three years ago, maybe more, Gaijin made upgrading your crews a major priority. Otherwise, even your fully spaded plane flies like it was just out of the factory. However, he refuses, says it is too expensive. Sadly, that means almost every game, he passes out pulling too many Gs. Some people you can lead to water, you cant make them drink. For me, it is worth it, and logical, to spend the money and buy GE to upgrade to EXPERT and even ACE. Most of my crews are EXPERT and a fair number of select crews are ACE. Did you know, without using some hack on rear gunners as some unethical bomber pilots use, a fully skilled EXPERT crew in a bomber or any plane with rear gunners will track an enemy plane faster, the turret will spin faster, and the maximum range of a rear gunner is 660 meters. As most fighter pilots use a convergence of 300 - 500 meters, that means your rear gunners will start firing long before the enemy gets within their convergence.

@@skDoger Oh, I have constantly badgered him both flying with him and in the comment section of his videos. Whenever he passes out, I leave a comment, that he needs to upgrade his crew. The thing is, he is a very popular KZbinr that I fly with. Some people are just stubborn. His argument, it is just too expensive. A good example is my ACE crew in the 229. I pulled a maneuver right in front of him one day where he exclaimed: What the hell was that.? I said, now you do it. As I said I have certain planes from tier one to tier 6 which have either an Expert crew in it or an ACE crew. 90% of all my crews at any tier have an Expert crew.

They still do. In sim, if you get close enough, it'll still show a marker. The skills affect the range. But the distance is pretty small, so you shouldn't focus on those if you mainly play sim.

Nope, repair rank is only for in-hangar repairs. Field repair is the skill for battle repair speed.

In general, AI gunners are only good if you need to adjust course briefly, as their range is so low. Nobody who has a brain gets anywhere near .2km of the rear of a bomber
