The character's name is Hanschen, and he's reading a passage from Shakespeare's "Othello". And he doesn't "turn" gay, he just is gay (even in "The Bitch of Living", he says that he has a crush on Bobby Mayler).

I know it is kind of randomly asking but does anybody know of a good site to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@LaqOfInterest12 жыл бұрын
They wanted to give the impression that when the characters suddenly come out of nowhere and start singing a song, they're in their own little world and not literally singing. Throwing in the microphones (and Hanschen's mention of a stereo) is an anachronism meant to remind us of that.

To show that they've kind of stepped out of reality to sing a song. So they aren't singing in reality. When they don't use mics (left behind, word of your body, mamma who bore me) it's because they're still in the scene and interacting with others. The mics don't actually work.

this isn't consistent with the show. Its actually a flaw in the directing.

I've never seen this show in person, but this has to be the sweetest, funniest, most innocent yet punk runk, interesting and dynamic number (with one of my favorite showtunes) I can think of. This show is so brilliant!!!!

That's a good question. The reason why the characters in Spring Awakening hold their microphones to their mouth when they perform their numbers is because the "song world" in Spring Awakening are almost like private moments, instead of like in a usual musical where the characters are singing to each other. Even in Melchior and Wendla's numbers together like The Word of Your Body and The Guilty ones, they don't sing to each other, it's all about their feelings and inner thoughts.

It's a really interesting show when you think about it. It's set in the past but they're just teenagers at the end of the day, and have the same feelings as teenagers from the 21st century, so the modern references and the microphones reminds us of that. They could be modern-day teenagers just as easily.

@Rumevyione Oh come on. It's not their fault that if they have never heard of Spring Awakening before Glee. Music and arts programs were being cut across the nation prior to Glee. Broadway isn't exactly the most easy thing to have access to.

I think, its up to the play's title is up to the translator's discretion because I've seen "Spring Awakening", "Spring's Awakening", and "Awakening of Spring" in my college library. They're all the same play, but different translators.

You probably feel that way because that was the version you saw and are most familiar with. I saw this cast (but w/ Phoebe as Anna) and I prefer the OBC. I will say that, from a recording I heard of the London cast, I loved the way the Brit Thea said, "He's such a radical." And what do you mean there's barely any laughing? My audience was dying with laughter. In this vid, the people are quiet so they can hear Hanschen's lines better. They're still laughing at all the appropriate parts.

I think it's that when they hold the mics, it's supposed to represent their thoughts. That's why the boys talk during BOL, but then pull out the mics to sing because that's what they're thinking. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm not 100% sure. Haha.

That's quite possible. I've never read the official Libretto, let alone read Sater's comments on it or anything, so you're probably right. And believe me, I am so glad we could discuss this without erupting into "OMG Ur Wrong! U dont knw anything!!" like some other angry interactions I've seen on KZbin comment spaces. :) We're much more rational and respectful.
