Miriam, what is a “dl”? I’m in canada and I’ve not heard of that measurement before that I know of... could you give us the equivalent in millilitres or grams maybe? Thanks ❤️
@sozzish4 жыл бұрын
@@UrbanHomesteadMomma a dl is a deciliter, 1/10 of a liter so equal to 100 ml (milliliter).

The video refreshed my memory of the Christmas I had in Sweden 15 years ago:) I totally get what you said about the way you wrap the candies affects the experience when you eat them. It does "taste" differently when you put them in the cup cake holds:)

Oh, I thought everyone had the same recipe for "knäck", but seems like our recipes are very different. My recipe for knäck is just equal parts heavy cream, syrup and sugar, add a knob of butter (not important how much in my experience) and then almonds to taste. When I was a kid my mum would always try to use a spoon to place the knäck in each cup before it hardened (about 70-150 cups!) which often was very stressful. When I got old enough to take over I just pored the toffee into the cups right from the pot. A lot quicker but you lose some toffee when the cups fall over or you miss xD. Practice does make perfect though and nowadays I usually only miss about 5 cups in one batch (~75 cups). The missed cups go to the chef as a reward for the hard work ;) .

In Australia we also have a toffee in a cupcake mould. A little less complicated, ours are called Stickjaw Toffees and usually children sell them as school fundraisers during the yearly school festival (fête) or during bake sales as a class fundraiser! They’re so hard and sticky and that’s the fun in them because they might unstuck a loose tooth! We usually sprinkle them with colourful sprinkles but basically it’s just sugar 😂 nothing much else like nuts or cream like the Swedish version!

Remembered when my mother first came over from China, she did not always gets all the ingredients she wanted when it comes to cooking or making biscuits. What she does is to look for alternative to substitute what she doesn't have. Well at the end she did well and things did have its unique taste . It's all the more what a mother would do for us. Improvise is the answer. No cheese , make your own. My mum lived up to a good old age at 84 before she passed on after my dad left a couple years after. She was a very strong will woman and good in business as well. Much like your mother in law. Believed she'll pass on all she knows to you. That's how my wife learnt the cooking's and our family 's culture & traditions. Some might be useful some might not. It's up to you to choose, adapt. Improvise all that you had learnt from your mother in law. All that for you to pass onwards to your future daughter in-law !! That's chinese family culture. Good night, morning.

Tomorrow is 冬至, maybe you should bring it to your in-laws to celebrate. And also "Christmas Star" - Jupiter and Saturn conjunction happening on 21 Dec. Go star gazing on this rare celestial occasion and celebrate a fusion festival. I am sure that you would have a great view being in the country side and high altitude.
