When I first bought our house, I went with the cheap budget corrugated pipe route, I even meticulously ensured a slope with no low spots. But after digging it back up and attempting to reseal the foundation, the pipe didn't get laid back down or even reconnected by the contractor. More water started seeping into the basement and the millions of earwigs living in those pipes, I pulled the trigger & rented a ditch witch, redid the 100+ foot PVC SC40 run connecting 4 gutters, down hill to the driveway. Thanks to your videos I knew what to do; and had a full bubble the whole run! No more water issues here

It doesn't look like corrugated pipe was the problem. Just that they let gutters and pipes will up with leaves and other things. Need to filter that out and catch it in basins before going into the pipes. Then proper maintenance in this heavily wooded property. The gutters are probably also all clogged above the pipes you removed and likely still won't drain with your repairs. They are all just going to clog again in a few years.

For the custom shallow angles I have had luck using a heat gun to warm up either a fitting or a section of the pipe and bending it where I need it to go. I have used that trick to open up a 22.5 to make kind of a compound transition with one fitting and I once needed to offset a riser to line up with a downspout. Used on a straight run, like you did with the ferncos, it eliminates that joint so the inside remains smooth. The dewalt cordless heat gun does the job, a bit slower than a corded but quicker than a trip to the store if you don’t have a fernco on hand.

This had nothing to do with corrugated pipe. Ridiculously large catch basin that hadn’t been cleaned out for years, gutters that hadn’t been cleaned out for years, and a grate on the exit of the pipe doomed this system. PVC would have been the same.
@brabblemaster401
@brabblemaster401 Жыл бұрын
Thats not the fault of corrugated pipe, it was shitty install. Corrugated is better in many cases when it has the proper catch basins and cleanouts. Every time you connect to gutters you need a proper catch basin to stop buildup and if you using slotted for a French drain it needs stones and fabric, or the holes get filled. In many areas, mine included, you cant use PVC. It cant take the ground movement from frost.

Corrugated pipe = Field Tile! I live in Iowa, the Capitol of Field Tile. 90+% of farmland here has some sort of clay. One things for certain, when Joe Shmoe homeowners who consume a lot of video content find a KZbinr that they like, they will follow whatever that KZbinr is saying. This job was done well but corrugated would have worked too in this application. The customer just never maintained it. I’ve installed both types of pipe. It’s all about the installation and maintenance. Those socks are a joke. You need a massive amount of stone to keep the soil from entering the perforated pipe, and optional fabric surrounding the stone. Solid corrugated pipe needs tape around the joints when the trench is back filled with soil. Either pipe will need convenient access points for cleanouts.
@GCFD
@GCFD Жыл бұрын
@@jamiepippin3892 great point Jamie. That’s exactly why I don’t just say these things but I actually show the pipes working like they were designed to. That’s the scientist in me checking results. No one ever says, I regret installing pvc and should have used corrugated.

No matter what type of material is used, it must be installed properly and maintained regularly. With all the trees there, the gutters, downspouts, drainage pipes and surface drains should be cleaned more frequently than the average house and property. That corrugated system was old and parts were probably abused in areas where cement work was done. It was also no match for those roots. No doubt schedule 40 should be used under cement, through trees with the potential of growing large roots and under areas where motor vehicles drive.

Could you have lined the corrugated under the concrete from the catch basin with a 2 inch PVC?
@GCFD
@GCFD Жыл бұрын
Yes If you could manage to get the pipe through the corrugated. Anything that got through the 2" pipe wouldn't hurt the 4" once it got there.
@JE-zl6uy

This is where you have to get one of those Jetter setups like Drain Addict uses! Still you don't do cleanouts on these pipes as often as you tear them out for the better option so that investment is likely not worth it.

Love the plastic pipe but would it not pay to put more clean out places
@GCFD
@GCFD Жыл бұрын
The pvc doesn’t need cleanouts since it is smooth and glued. Nothing gets caught or held and the next downpour produces enough flow to blow out anything.

Do the pvc pipes also rot away at some point? The corrugated pipes all seem to have completely fallen apart.

It needs to be against the brick so there is no moat formed. If the concert was against he bring you could dump water right on it.

Looked like really old corrugated. On top of that it seems like the gutters werent covered at all and never cleaned at all. Seems like you almost need a drain cleaner type of hose to get corrugated cleaned out that is that backed up.

I completely agree. Having a snake and jetter on site was key to finishing this job well. If I was interested in doing more clean out work I would buy higher capacity jetter equipment (higher psi and gpm) and a better snake.

Would any of that stuff you pull out of the drains be good in the compost pile?

Yes it's a lot of organic matter in there and would be great compost.

✨Great vid 👍. With all said and done. As I've mentioned before in your vids. The gutters above should be the #1 first thing to look at..It's obvious the trees there caused the problem. People have to clean out gutters. Or put gutter guards on especially in a area with overhead trees ...Gutter shields would have prevented the clogs. That's years of neglect

Good point Charles. I try to wear knee pads and we don't work that hard. I have many sets of knee pads, but sometimes we don't wear them, as Steve mentioned above. I also ride my bike so I keep my knees moving, and I get them rotated regularly.

This is one of those jobs where you ended up with a solution you aren't really happy with but the "ideal" solution was just cost prohibitive. Lot's of negotiations and compromises with the homeowner before you ended up with a solution that works but is far from ideal. All based on cost. I'm sure you wanted to get out your concrete saw.

@@GCFD I hear you. I'm sure you did a great job of meeting the customers needs within their budget. I thought it was a good video. It showed a real world contracting situation. If price wasn't an issue, you would have gotten all those pipes underground. But that wasn't in the cards so you found a way to meet their minimum needs of getting the water away from the foundation. BTW: I really liked your fernco flexible coupling solution for that tight spot. I'll try to remember that one. You even left in the part where you forgot to loosen the band clamp :)
