I spent a year and a half at fedex. In that time i was a package handler, switcher, and ops administrator. I left the warehouse to be a driver. What this guy says is true. You show youre a hard worker your managers will exploit that and work you harder. Theyll send the lazy slow people home and keep the hard workers to pick up the slack. There is nothing but massive efficiency drops after 6hrs, unless you're doing meth perhaps. What we have is closer to the WWII Nazi Germany work enviroment. I started with UPS in March of 2017 as an unloader. Went straight to feeders and skipped package in May of this year. The job is easy as hell and if you drive everyday expect to gross 2000 plus a week and that's just starting out at the lowest rate. Being a part timer that went staright to feeders you'll be on call a bit before you get your feeder seniority. It's great though bro, get your CDL or CDL permit and sign the PT to FT bid sheet when it comes out and say you want feeders.

They worked the shit out of me and all the folks that worked hard. Busted my hand and it’s permanently jacked up because they handled the incident poorly. The lack of communication must be in their training manual as a right of passage! The dehydration is real. Comes from touching the boxes and you have to drink water! You sweat in the summer and worse in the winter because you have on two layers of clothes in those brutally cold warehouses. Pat downs, security scans, shoes off, hats off to enter and leave. Dummies for managers. Nasty asses. Drunk and high folks who don’t show up on Saturday because they got paid on Friday. No regard for the job and the job has no love for you. Unsafe conditions. Folks getting robbed, attacked and violated in the parking lot. Supervisors with the brain power of a fly flexing on folks old enough to be their mother/father...Just all parts of fuckery for the sake of greed. And don’t you dare question anything even in the most professional manner. For a lousy $200 a week, if that. Your body, brain and soul take a beating. 4am always got here too quickly. I would not recommend this shit to my worst enemy. But, if you go in with blinders on and not think about the bs, get your little change and go. I worked at UPS for 5 years and didnt think it was that bad. I loaded for 1 year and then was asked to go into the sort aisle because they liked my work ethic. Sort Aisle was CAKE and fun because you can literally talk the entire shift and call seniority (if you had any) to make the newer sorters do the messed up trailers or if you wanted to leave early the supervisors always asked you first. In other words if youre a badass in the sort aisle and handle your flow and know your union rights work is gonna be a piece of cake. For anyone whos thinking about working at UPS as soon as you get hired just grind out the hard work for the 3 months and ask to take the test for the sort aisle youll thank me later lol

In my Life I have determined that the lowest paying jobs are always the HARDEST ones to work, and take the biggest toll on your body physically. Hey man I totally agree with you. I also worked as a package handler for a company called Ontrac. It was the most miserable Job I ever had. Supervisors were disorganized, lazy employers would leave hours early. I remember on my 2nd day many package handlers called off and I had to unload a 18 wheeler all by myself. It took me about 5 hours to do. The other day I broke 15 pallets myself. Super visors did pick on me but only because they know i'll achieve their orders. I quit and felt so relieved.

Interesting video.. I just finished my first day as a preloader. 315 am to around 820 am. Didn't get ANY training, barring my 3 hour orientation and videos over a month ago.. A supervisor had me doing 2-3 trailers based upon how busy it was. I noticed the supervisors have awful communication skills. Splits suck.. hopefully they're not common. I got 15 at once had to sift thru my nearly full trailers to find them.. meanwhile the supervisor is watching the belt and tells me "oh, keep in mind you'll need to do watch the belt and do splits on your own eventually." Well, fuck. They said I was doing great, but I don't respond well to praise because I'm a cynic and I don't want to be buttered up.

I was that 10% bro I worked at the UPS Hodgkin location in Illinois. Oh my was I exploited all to hell after I watched this video. I would do some supervisor tasks such as open/close loads, at then end of the sort I would walk the belt and clean up or push down packages that didn't go through, and clean up my area. Then I'll move on to another location in the warehouse to reload up packages that failed to leave the warehouse to get resorted and I at first I volunteered just to get a little more hours and to show I was a good worker and eventually my "area supervisor" noticed me and labeled me as the "killer" of my area and then the main "head supervisor" got wind of me and then he made me come to reload packages everyday as some I have to do. So eventually I quit cause I was only 17 in highschool and I couldn't do it anymore after 9 months of working there.

It honestly sounds to me like you were a good supervisor candidate. I'm not sure what they were thinking in not pushing you to take the test when you turned 18. Lost opportunity for the company. Sorry to hear it worked out that way, but I'd be a liar to say I haven't seen the exact same thing myself. If you ever pick up any trades in the future, it might be worth looking into a specialist job with UPS, they tend to make some pretty good bucks without having to handle any package volume.

I understand what you say about exploiting those that work harder. It's easier on the supervisor. I have seen UPS drivers in the neighborhood and can tell they are under a lot of pressure. When I worked for an airline as a cargo handler, it was a lot less stress than at UPS, but people would exploit those that cared about doing a good job. If there was cooperation it would be easier, but the lazy always say, "It all pays the same". Hope you are going to school.

People generally work part-time for benefits and flexible shift opportunities (for example, a lot of night owls like the night shift, roughly 11:00pm to roughly 3:00am depending on the building). For the time investment, it's not that awful in regards to pay, and recent contract negotiations are going to boost that even further. It's an ideal job if you already have a part-time job that will line up well with your shift. I used to work at a pizza place alongside UPS. It worked for a while, but I eventually became a bit burned out from it, even though I had worked out the scheduling pretty well. There are many long-term opportunities, but you need to be willing to gain a lot of experience first. As a package handler (which almost everyone starts as), you do a ton of work in not the greatest conditions (I would argue better than most of the industry), and you have to deal with being lowest seniority for a while. If you do seek promotion to management the pay is even better and you do get more hours and a guaranteed minimum salary. As others have said, the lateral opportunities from there are great as there are tons of branches of this company. The reason I say the long-term is good is because a lot of baby boomers have been retiring, and job opportunities are quickly following. Even then, this is not a job for everyone. You should carefully consider how much physical work you can endure, and put a lot of effort into having good physical form when you do it. I'd give it at least a month to settle your mind on it once you've started, and then make a decision from there. They will hire almost anyone off the street that isn't clearly a criminal. Oh and last note, never steal something from the packages. It's considered mail theft which is a big ol' federal felony. Obviously most people don't need to be told that, but it's worth stating.

I sort, the raises aren’t like they used to be and I’ve considered supervision and driving as a result. But even as pt after 4 yrs your pension is locked in, and beyond twenty yrs that pension isn’t horrible. So even the pt positions aren’t as bad as some think. But I can make around 35,000 a yr without double shifts, which allows me to work in other fields and study bonsai in my free time. If you have no options in life UPS is a good job. Yes its very hard but like every thing in life it gets easier. If you are willing to work you can clear 50k a year easily. And all you are doing is picking up boxes and putting them down. If you are doing a good job they will approve almost unlimited overtime and sometimes come in on Sunday which pays double time. Again its not for everyone but if you don't have options in life this is the best route. Better than being homeless.

Hes soo right about them taking advantage of you once you show you're a hard worker. When I first started I was hired as seasonal with a chance to be hired on as a part timer. So of course after hearing about all of our benefits I wanted to stay there at ups. So I busted my ass to show I was worth keeping and after 2 in a half weeks they told me they were keeping me and to relax a little and let the other guys do more work so they could learn and earn their spot to stay, and it was all good until I got sent to help another belt. I impressed the supervisor from the other belt and he decided to get me switched over to his belt and every day he expects me to be 150% In some cases I'll be loading the truck with another guy and I'll be loading 2x faster than the other guy but only I get yelled at to load faster. On days where we have heavy flow i gotta cover 2 trailers by myself and help other trailers when they get backed up and help out with bulk (either really heavy items that cant be put on belts or super long boxes, normally 70lbs and up) while still keeping my 2 trailers clean. Its crazy and I'm only getting paid minimum wage . Dont get me wrong I love this type of work because it's a workout but sometimes they want too damn much. Most of the times they dont send anyone to help me out when I get backed and instead I get yelled at to pick up the pace, but as soon as some else gets backed up guess who has to help out, you guessed it, Me. Sometimes you even work 3=4hrs without any breaks. I strongly suggest you don't work at ups if you're not willing to put your body through an intense workout 5 days a week. A tip to keep you strong is just remember you're getting paid to workout, and keep checking yourself out in the mirror you start notice loss of weight and arms getting big

Ups destroyed my physical and mental health last peak. I worked at DFW and it was pure hell because the air hub facility was getting twice the load it was designed to handle. Working 12 hour shifts in the pouring rain and cold on the ramp. Quitting that hell hole was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Man I got lucky then! I work at UPS that is in the airport. I work in the Ramp and its the easiest job I have ever had. 4-5 Hours, the pay now due to the new Contract is 13/h which is great for my state. Except for pallets that weight 4-10k pounds, the rest are easy to push due to rollers. I have my college paid, and recently there was an influx of young high schoolers-first time college hires like me which makes the day go faster with socializing. Great job! but when we randomly get pick for HUB DUTY! Hell that is literally hell.

Back on in 2000 I worked at UPS for 4 days at a major city hub. If you go to work there as a package handler, make sure you join the union. If you don’t want to, this job is not for you. I decided not to join the union because my thought was why pay for representation seems an outdated way in today’s US workforce. Unions were created in the industrial revolution... Boy was I wrong, those union people will f you over. Lied about fans not working, leave you alone to unload/load an entire trailer w/o help, etc. They will make your life miserable to get you to either join or quit. UPS is definitely not a company I would recommend to work at, simply because they let that shit happen. Find a better job, they are out there. Thanks for sharing your experience there.

Some 20-30 years ago they used to do a scanner and loader (or a checker and loader) in every trailer, but the advent of better scanners and industrial tech has made this somewhat irrelevant. Not everyone can handle the job, but it's a little strange that he'd make that point. What it sounds like to me, is some supervisor had the bright idea to throw you into the fire in your first week, in one of the heaviest loads to decide if you can handle it or not. Sink or swim is definitely something I've seen training supervisors do. Consider that these people train a lot of new hires, and if you'd give up in one week you probably were going to waste their time in the first place. While I don't feel that way personally, many do. As for the union, while they may act underhanded if you don't join (I don't personally have this experience), they are still negotiating your contract. I honestly think people should join the union, even though I'm a supervisor. It's ultimately your choice, but if you're going to work a labor job and refuse representation that's a little silly to me.

Also I only work hard for managers/supervisors who have earned my respect everyone else gets a box every 3 seconds. I'm also a part time driver I frequently have to tell part time supervisors when they are about to violate dot/labor laws.

I was the nice guy at my UPS. I started there a little over a year ago, would say yes to whatever my bosses asked because I figured that’s what was expected of me and I felt obligated being the new guy. Well now I have to go in early everyday to “set up” and then when everyone leaves I have to stay and “set up” again for the next shift. I’m basically the companies “bitch” I’m getting pretty tired of it. I work Monday through Friday doing local sort. I was working saturdays as well because my supervisor told me I had to. I ended up finding out I didn’t have to and it was optional the whole time. He lied to me. So I stopped coming in on saturdays. Now he picks on the new guys. He lies and tells them they have to work saturdays. I get so frustrated with UPS because the lazy guys get left alone while they play on their phones all day while the hard workers bust their ass and then have to do carry the weight of the lazy employees. That company is so backwards. I get paid the same as a lazy guy but I do way more work in the long run. I’m getting fed up to be honest.

These people will literally work you until your broken, i hurt myself a few weeks back at the job and these dudes STILL asked me to come in, but one of the "higher up" managers seen i was uncomfortably in pain and sent me home ONLY BECAUSE THEY DIDNT WANT TO RISK HAVING TO PAY ME WORK MAN COMP or get sued if i got MORE hurt at the job. Dont get me started with the disrespect you get when your not a "TEAMSTER"(full time and in the teamster union). Them teamsters only take care of each other, so you will be put to sort the WORSE trucks with the WORSE unloaders ESPECIALLY if you the new hard worker they will rip you in half with the bullshit. Them teamsters will unload BULK 80lb boxes to your sort belt KNOWING thats a big no no(I no f*cks given in the world throw them to the small sort belt where only smalls go just to be a dick since they wanna be a dick) they just dont care for the new comers. All the new hard workers are told to come in 3 to 4 hours before the slow new comers and TEAMSTERS that dont feel like doing shit sorting one box per 20 seconds while texting on the phone or watching ESPN ZONE( remind you NEW COMERS are told no phones allowed which is total BULLSHIT). The new comers are the slack picker uppers, ESPECIALLLLYYY IF YOU PLAY THAT I WORK THE HARDEST CARD, they will abuse you they will only text you and tell you to come in at 2pm and everyone else(TEAMSTERS) walks in high off blunts and hennessy around 5 6pm and not have to do shit. They will call u to the hardest truck bays to sort while the TEAMSTERS pick n choose who or what truck they feel like going to. Theres a TEAMSTER chick on my sort belt thats the worse she literally dont touch shit and will let ALL the boxes come to you and the sort supervisors will flirtaciously say "you gotta sort something girl😉😊😋" with they simping asses(dudes at the UPS are the highest level of simps towards females so if you a new guy and you're smoove/handsome becareful brother the fellas will find you a threat in taking all they women and start doing salty shit to fuck your day up(SIMPS!). ***UPSER EXPERIENCE*** I work at Worldport in Kentucky. I was a union employee for 5 years before I decided to get promoted. I gained a lot of communication and leadership skills. I also got to know a lot of sups really well and learned a lot about the operation. Getting promoted was the best thing I ever did. From a management standpoint, we’re not picking on the hard workers or whatnot. We’re relying on the best people we have to get the job done with the best quality work. All the while we should be working with the employees that need more training and try to make them the go to people for when shit needs to get done. Not every sup does that but a lot do or at least try their damnedest. It does seem like you guys do things different at the smaller gateways like letting people leave before the sort is really done and using all the employees efficiently. Your supervisor should expect the best from you and you should expect the best from your supervisor. Hell expect the best from your fellow hourly employees. The better everyone works the better the easier the job is. I speak from experience.

I worked at a call center for three years. Now that job killed my soul. Haha. It was a terrible experience for me. I worked at UPS as a driver helper seasonal last year and got hired as a preloader this year permanently. I didn't do training. My first day they had me load a vehile. Gave me a sheet of paper that told me where the packages go. The 1000s 2000s etc. The supervisor checked in on me every once in awhile to see how I was doing. I enjoy working at UPS as a preloader. My supervisor is great, and so are the people around me.

Gpiforever1, Yeah, same. I had to unload 6,000 packages from the trucks during the morning shift, one time. My co-worker didn't make it, so I was expected to work on my own, while my Supervisor hovered over me, telling me, "Go faster!" Most packages weighed over 100 lbs. (2:30am - 9:00am)

As a current Package Handler in Houston Texas we are going to die when work starts they're eighteen wheeler parked everywhere including the customers parking lot, its bad to the point where the bay doors are all taken and outside the bay doors they're more eighteen wheeler waiting to get put on those bay doors Edit: About working there i'd recommend it to anyone just pace yourself its tiring even if you're fit or workout. You'll definitely be sore the first week even if you're an athlete. Edit 2: I weigh 110 and 5'8" and i unload like a monster sometimes; its not hard when you get used too it.

Hi! Handlers in my area are mostly either young in their early 20s or middle ages in their late 40s. There are a couple of women workers but the ratio of men to women is about 4 to 1. UPS does pay college tuition up to $5000 but the requirement for my facility is you have to have worked for over a year part-time. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Part-time supervisor present: This information seems to be pretty uniform across the country. Bear in mind that some union brotherhoods and local facilities operate differently, but this appears to be what most districts operate by. These are fantastic points to ask about in an interview. In my personal experience, ages tended to be early to mid 20's, and then mostly 40's-50's and up. My building also has more seniority than anywhere else in the district, so hard to say. You'll generally see a lot of college kids in most buildings. As a night sort, we had a lot of women relative to the rest of the company as far as I know, but most of them are actually harder workers than a lot of the men in my opinion.

I worked as a seasonal pvd and was fired after 4 days. They gave me all the crap job's, huge apartments, trailor parks, and busy areas. I had no UPS GPS to help me, no orientation and no training. I made $23.00 an hour but I'm actually an Esthetician and when I'm busy I make $60.00 an hour.
