I have worked at UPS for 44years. Started out as an unloaded the became a package sorter.I worked at two hubs. I started out on day sort, then had to go to the night at BEDFORD PARK. Transferred to twilight then moved to CACH in Hodgkins. Later returned to the DAY SORT for the last 16 years. I considered Package Car driver but I'm glad I didn't. My attendance was in good standings. I had started to have taken days off due to a change in my lifestyle. I hated missing days, then one morning woke up with pain in shoulders. It was then I decided maybe I should consider retiring. As of March 1st, after moving towards retirement, I finally left UPS for the last time.

Unloading and loading are both SEVENTY percent mental and THIRTY percent physical. If you know a thing or two about physics and energy conservation. Less movement in the power zone is definitely more. There are ways to make heavy packages travel further with 1 move than newbies often do with 3 or 4 moves. Watch for opens, leakers, HAZMATS, and Irregulars. Remember that preparation is huge no matter what shift anyone chooses to work . Handle only what your arms can reach and don't worry about everything else. Always use your HEADS Hydrate, Exercise, Alleviate stress, Diet right, and sleep/stretch daily and you'll be fine. If there's any tip I can give to new hires or temps, it's pick the brains of old school workers and get to know what it is that drives them to keep coming back to the daily grind.

Just started working there this week, they raised the pay rate for part time package handler to 22$/hour which is great, but for me first week is really tiring, I basically load the trucks with heavy packages up to 70lb. or more, a lot of bruises on my forearms, some cuts at the back of my hand, and after the first two days everything hurts and sores, I had to take pain killer the next day in order to continue working, but that's probably because I never exercise before and just get into this job certainly, I was supposed to load at least 300 packages per hour onto the trucks, but I was really slow since most of them are too heavy for me. I learned to bring gloves and I'm thinking of long sleeves but it was too hot for that because there was no air conditioner or fans or anything because I think the building I work at was an ancient one so it's really old. Wouldn't recommend for someone who never exercise and skinny like me(I weigh only 120lb.) but since the pay is good and with a lot of benefits I'll have to endure it, maybe I'll get use to it in a couple more weeks or so, once I built up more of my stamina.

In Michigan, the buildings were heated to 40 degrees but in the winter time they opened all the doors for semis and so the building was 5-10 degrees. I was paid 22k a year for part time work with vacay and health insurance. Its a good part time job for high school education. However, I found it to be a toxic working environment. Unless you work doubles. I challenge anyone to do that in New Orleans, doesn’t matter what time of year. Pay here for package handlers is 15.50 an hour. By no means are you a package handler alone. It’s jumping from bulk, to clearing jams, to up and down the ladder sort, to in the trailer scanning and stacking. By far the most grueling job for the pay you can possibly have. @@rudyisog702 drivers get the most hours. But if you build up seniority in the building you can get more hours. Most positions get almost the same hours; unload is done first, then sort/smalls then the loaders all in the same hour. But if you really want more hours you need seniority that allows you to stay longer than others. I have 4 years seniority that allows me to start 30 minutes early and when we’re done I have the right to choose to leave first, or stay til the end. I want hours so I stay longer than anyone else in my area. We also have another area where we repack boxes and with seniority we’re able to get an extra 1+ hours after shift there. Moral of the story, I’m able to get nearly full time hours with seniority and the position doesn’t necessarily matter.
