I'm a contract engineer and have worked with a lot of different manufacturers. I've only been working since 2013, so maybe they were better before that, but Toyota's TRD stuff has always struck me as nothing but some cheap off the shelf suspension upgrades, a sticker package, some interior bits maybe cheap skid plates too if their feeling generous. Especially after working with some other manufacturers who are touching almost every single component on their performance vehicles. In any case Toyota has put themselves in a weird spot with their incredibly long product cycles. All their TNGA-F products had to play 2-3 generations of catch up in one product cycle, it was a recipe for disaster even for a brand like Toyota.
@GooglePixelGoogle7 ай бұрын
I'm going to dissagree. Long product cycles tend to help solidify reliabilty. It also helps build a larger aftermarket following that would most likely be limited with a short cycle. Also the TRD stuff for the 4runner was not just off the shelf stuff. It was more than suspension. It was crawl control (multi-terrain select), manual transfer case, and rear locking diff. Some of the stuff that you could not get in the other packages.

Unfortunately, it isn't that they don't care what their customers want. It is EPA mandates, plain and simple. The same reason that the Hellcat variants of the charger, Jeep, and challenger, camaro, etc are going away is because the EPA wants Internal combustion engines gone so they can force everyone into EV's, but they realize it has to be done slowly. They are forcing the manufacturers to these smaller, overengineered, less reliable engines to "control emissions:. It isn't any different than the "gas guzzler tax" that manufacturers instituted skip shifting, auto stop/start, DoD, AFM, all these systems were implemented to avoid the tax that would tale them out of the market because of pricing. If you think that 70-80k is pricey for a new Tundra, a V8 powered one with penalties would be 100-120k. I agree that the quality of vehicles have gone down exponentially over the last few years and it's not just Toyota, it's all of the major manufacturers. I was in the same boat as you when I had to purchase a vehicle a few weeks ago after an accident that totaled my four wheel drive vehicle. I researched, and the only thing that I could rationally do was go with a 24 $runner, before they were unavailable when the garbage 25 model came out. There is no hope for the V8's coming back, and I suspect quality will continue to slip as the manufacturers struggle to meet this insane fuel efficiency and emission control measures. Welcome to government bureaucracy. Cheers.

You may not care about emissions or power numbers or gas mileage but the federal government requires that Toyota and every other manufacturer care about these things. As far as power numbers go most consumers want the power. The only way to make the power and satisfy federal requirements is small displacement turbocharged engines. Without these requirements Toyota would have kept the 5.7 V8 forever as well as the 3.5 V6. Toyota didn’t make these changes to piss off consumers. They didn’t have a choice. Federal mandates made the choices necessary. Large displacement naturally aspirated engines cannot meet federal air quality standards. Smaller engines can’t supply the power consumers want without adding a turbo. This is what the future holds for all light duty trucks. As far as the Tundra goes, Toyota laid a big fat rotten egg! They probably need to start from scratch! BTW, that 4.0 V6 and 5 speed trans in your 4Runner date back to the gen 2 Tacoma. This shows how long Toyota hangs on to a power train that works until they’re forced to change!

I agree, Toyota needed to prepare themselves for the 2027 CAFE requirements. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) system sets fleetwide efficiency targets. People gripe that Toyota should keep a V8 like Ford or Chevrolet. What they don't understand is that Ford balanced gas guzzlers like the F-150 Coyote and Raptor R with EVs like the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning. Toyota is not going to do that, and they had to implement a new engine, like it or not. There will be teething pains, BUT, that is why I have always told people to NEVER, EVER, EVER, buy a 1st or 2nd model year vehicle. I have made that mistake twice and it was a hard lesson to learn.

I mostly blame the government mandates on emissions and fuel economy and rising cost putting them in a tuff spot .Nobody makes a good long lasting reliable vehicle now . I will be driving my 21 Tundra till I bite the dust !
@GooglePixelGoogle7 ай бұрын
That is the key. Government regulation, like it or not, increases prices an everything it touches. There is one more thing though that many people don't think about. Toyota can only charge what people are willing to pay in a free market economy. Therefore if people would stop paying what most of us see as crazy prices, the manufacturer would have to cut costs and deliver a different product. In reality, people are still willing to go into debt with a 6-10 year loan instead of just walking away and buying something older and used. I have not bought a new car since 2017, and I don't plan on buying another one at this point. It's not that I enjoy driving older cars, I just find that even if the car is complicated, it's still much cheaper to repair than buying a new vehcile.

So sad what happened to Toyota. All these recalls on the new Toyota are mostly engine problems. On one channel the guy is mentioning, that instead of sending the dealers a new box engine. Instead, Toyota only send certain parts and they want the mechanics there to tear into the engine and put the new parts in and replace the old defective parts. A lot of mechanics are not up to the doing that interior tear-down very technical work inside the engine. And people are now also mentioning the interior workmanship, and the materials that Toyota is now using are of cheaper quality. All this and a much higher cost vehicle compared to last year.

What doesn't make sense is that the engine is made in the same place that the V8 was made. This recall couldve happened to the V8 as well. I understand that these trucks still aren't as good as we wish and too expensive for what they are, but c'mon man. People are overreacting.

There has always been plastic junk. In the 70's I drove plastic junk. In the 80's I drove plastic junk. In the 90's I drove plastic junk. In the early 2000's I drove plastic junk, honestly my newer 4runner is much nicer than any of those old cars. Cars have gotten better over time, they are just more complicated now. Older cars were easier to work on, but they had their own set of issues that had to be repaired (that is why we had mechanic shops back then). I know this because I lived it, the good old days were not as good as peoples selective memory tells them. My fleet and issues: 1972 Gran Torino Sport (carb and distributer issues, main bearing retainer failed on the toploader 4spd), 1983 Mailbu Classic (never ran right, would not idle, removed the smog equipment and it ran a little better but never 100%), 1984 Cavalier (total junk mobile with engine failure), 1987 Dodge Van (ran great no issues), 1989 Camry (burned oil), 1991 5.0 Mustang (no issues), 1996 Mustang GT (cracked intake @ 11k miles, 4R70W lost OD @ 120K miles), 1996 Toyota Avalon (still have it 90K miles, rack and pinion replaced), 1997 GMC K2500 (spider injection failure, hydrolocked twice destroying an engine. I'm on the third injector set), 1998 Ford Ranger (constant electrical issues), 2004 Ford Exploder (transmision replaced twice at 120K miles), 2008 Lexus GX470 (no issues), 2014 lexus GX460 (No isseus), 2012 Mustang GT (main bearing failure @ 120K, but it was raced), and 2017 Toyota 4runner (No issues).

I’ll link my video below, but I am on my third master cylinder. Also, watch out for the tailgate rust issue while you are under warranty. It is NOT weather or salt related…but a garnish part issue. Toyota has a TSB addressing it. Everything else in my video is dealership-caused BS. Cheers. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqCQfHehrZ2Xg9Esi=Zn7E-eQ16gxyjbj4
