Private doctors offices (the ones insurance doesn't cover) in European cities often have tacky waiting rooms like that. No idea why. @@remisica here’s my mom’s advice: if you think you’ll need a lot of work done, find a dentist that has a good reputation and may be generally more expensive just for an evaluation of the mouth (to know what you’ll need done specifically). Not everything needs to be done at the same time, chances are you can spread it out based on what is most urgent and ideally find payment plans for better and more gentle care. Reviews can mean a lot! In the meantime she recommends keeping your mouth is as clean as possible: brush carefully and clean between the teeth and don’t let food sit.

The first time I read Paper Towns was halfway through a week absolutely stuffed with exams and was burning myself out studying every free second for these exams until I couldn’t do it any more so I started to read PT (I’d wanted to read one of John’s books for a while). Admittedly it didn’t help me get any more sleep than studying, but it gave me the escape I needed and let me know that there was more to life than stressing over grades. My needs met by a compassionate expert: I'll never forget the nurse who was my first contact when I came in for my first appointment last March to see my general physician. My husband asked me to go for a physical so we could get in there system, and I ended up breaking down about my deteriorating mental health. I explained to the nurse that I hadn't sought help yet because I didn't want to detach attention from people who needed it more. Her response was unforgettable to me. She stood in front of me, looked me square in the eye, and said "Just because there are other problems does not mean you don't have one." She helped me get an evaluation for depression and helped me schedule with their resident psychiatrist, who then set up a treatment plan for me that has slowly been helping since. Thank God for compassionate experts.

Today I too experienced a compassionate expert for the first time in a long time. It was my therapist who told me she had no idea what I was trying to say while I was going on a longwinded tirade, trying to not talk about how horrible I felt while seemingly talking about it. At first I was really hurt, embarrassed and felt suoer guilty and like a bad person. But then she explained that she saw I was suffering and that I was actively making it harder to get help by doing this. And that it was my choice if I didn't want to talk about it, that I could just tell her. But if I did want to talk about it she would try and help me. And honestly that broke me in that moment. All my life I pretend I am fine, so much so that most of the time I believe it myself. And usually people accept it, but here was someone who could see past that, and still left me the choice of whether or not to deal with it.

I refuse to believe that when he said "You have two pains: the physical pain and the psychological pain" out of his impossibly good-looking face in his Parisian accent that you didn't swoon at least a little bit. I mean, nobody's *that* heterosexual.

You're forgetting the third option were dentist "can't remember your name" moonlights as a world renowned art thief and dentistry is just his day job cover. He was actually just wrapping up a job before seeing you, that's why he got the cool protag. hair flourish on scene entry.

This makes me think of my psychiatrist. Most psychiatrists I’ve been to (and I’ve seen many) were just throwing prescriptions at me and then I was out the door. One particularly bad experience I had a psychiatrist basically tell me to kill myself during a crisis. Now though, my current psychiatrist is literally one of the best things to happen to my mental health. They actually listen to me, they understand my history with meds and always make sure I’m comfortable, they check in multiple times a week and during appointments they actually talk to me. It’s to a point where she can immediately tell if I’m not doing well by the tone of my voice or how much I talk. Having a professional that is both knowledgeable and cares is incredible, especially for physical and mental health problems

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'm actually in tears because I know that if someone had validated all my worst intrusive thoughts and encouraged me to give up when I was at my lowest, I probably wouldn't be here today. What kind of twisted person do you have to be to go into PSYCHIATRY and think that that is at all okay to say to a patient?? Best of luck to you and I hope you get all the compassion you need.

Now maybe I've never been a successful author who had one his works transformed into a feature film, and maybe I've never been to Paris, and maybe I've never even met Nat Wolff or Cara Delevigne, but I'll tell you ... I did once receive compassionate treatment at the hands of a capable expert, and then an indifferent and physically unremarkable pharmacist in my home town filled my prescription for Tylenol 3, so ... you know, similar story beats! John, sometimes you and your brother are simpatico, and work together either knowingly or unknowingly to touch on similar themes and advance a cogent point across multiple videos - and then sometimes one of you is the yin to the other's yang. Both are wonderful and lovely and I wouldn't ask for it any other way.

"...we all deserve to find a compassionate specialist..." after a life time of sadistic medical professionals and quacks misdiagnosing me and ignoring my concerns with a "silly child" that in at least one case became a massive issue that still defines my life today and a 15 year boycott of medical professionals, I have finally FINALLY found a doctor who is a Transgender Specialist and i have yet to find out if she's compassionate (my first appointment happens to be international women's day, 8th march) but I've heard many many very good things. I wish the first part of this story was much less relatable but I'm still happy I got here eventually

He's right you know. Having a need that is capably met by a compassionate expert should be a lot more relatable. I have seen so many experts that just want to get you out of there and move on to the next patient (and I get it that there are a lot of reasons for this but I am not trying to write an entire essay here) and it is really refreshing to see someone that actually still cares. I still go to my current doctor specifically because she has me call her with updates on my mental condition even though she has absolutely no obligation to.

I had a terrible bicycle accident four months ago. I fractured the tibial plateau bone in my right knee and had to get surgery. An orthopedic surgeon put eight screws and a metal plate in my leg. I am still in physical therapy. It was a chaotic ordeal, but the support of family, friends, and compassionate experts has made recovery possible.

I had a doctor who told me she was leaving for a new practice once. I looked up her new place seeing if I could keep seeing her. The practice a "concierge health clinic" had a $25k/year retainer fee so it turned out that I couldn't even really afford to never see her. It was the sort of place that you'd call because your kid broke their leg skiing at the mountain 3 hours out of town and then they'd arrange for a helicopter to come fetch you and while you're flying back to the city they'd call up the best bone doctor around, get them to come in on the weekend and have you sent directly to their hospital to have a cast applied. I suspect your dentist was that sort of dentist.

I'll never forget one time in high school, i was in the parking lot after school waiting for my sister to get to the car so we could go home. All of a sudden, this guy pulls up on a motorcycle, in a black leather jacket and black leather pants, as if he came out of the musical Greece or something. Then this girl came and got on the back of his bike, and she was gorgeous too. Then the two rode off, it was as if they were actors in a movie. I think about that still sometimes.

John, I am not a beat selling author, nor do I have tens of thousands of dollars to get comforted by handsome dentists that have fancy art in their waiting room. I do however have crippling ADHD and ptsd that has gone unchecked for many many years. This week I have an appointment to finally get medicated for these things after 10 years of try and receiving improper treatment. Your wish that I get to see a compassionate expert to capably dead with a need of mine is far more thoughtful and appreciated than you realise.

Now I'm imagining that in Paris, even the dentists with no money have paintings, like it's the first thing you buy when you are a dentist, like before you buy a dentist chair you get a painting and people can look at the painting while they lie down on the floor and you promise them you are saving up for a chair for next time

I love your writing, I love being apart of this community, I love getting insights in to how you think, but I've never thought to myself "I feel like I know John". I mean, no offense to John's meaning but this is definitely a story about how being poor is expensive, and wealth is more privilege than it is purchasing power. It's easy to imagine a person with the same toothache being out of work for a week waiting for a dental appointment. Haing the tooth awkwardly removed, weeks of pain and discomfort, buying a fake tooth or teeth paying to get them fitted etc. But for someone on a press junket it's a lunchbreak with the hot Parisian dentist and back to the opulent hotel room. This isn't a criticism of John or the story. Just what the story made me think of.
