@@remisica here’s my mom’s advice: if you think you’ll need a lot of work done, find a dentist that has a good reputation and may be generally more expensive just for an evaluation of the mouth (to know what you’ll need done specifically). Not everything needs to be done at the same time, chances are you can spread it out based on what is most urgent and ideally find payment plans for better and more gentle care. Reviews can mean a lot! In the meantime she recommends keeping your mouth is as clean as possible: brush carefully and clean between the teeth and don’t let food sit.

My needs met by a compassionate expert: I'll never forget the nurse who was my first contact when I came in for my first appointment last March to see my general physician. My husband asked me to go for a physical so we could get in there system, and I ended up breaking down about my deteriorating mental health. I explained to the nurse that I hadn't sought help yet because I didn't want to detach attention from people who needed it more. Her response was unforgettable to me. She stood in front of me, looked me square in the eye, and said "Just because there are other problems does not mean you don't have one." She helped me get an evaluation for depression and helped me schedule with their resident psychiatrist, who then set up a treatment plan for me that has slowly been helping since. Thank God for compassionate experts.

Today I too experienced a compassionate expert for the first time in a long time. It was my therapist who told me she had no idea what I was trying to say while I was going on a longwinded tirade, trying to not talk about how horrible I felt while seemingly talking about it. At first I was really hurt, embarrassed and felt suoer guilty and like a bad person. But then she explained that she saw I was suffering and that I was actively making it harder to get help by doing this. And that it was my choice if I didn't want to talk about it, that I could just tell her. But if I did want to talk about it she would try and help me. And honestly that broke me in that moment. All my life I pretend I am fine, so much so that most of the time I believe it myself. And usually people accept it, but here was someone who could see past that, and still left me the choice of whether or not to deal with it.

This makes me think of my psychiatrist. Most psychiatrists I’ve been to (and I’ve seen many) were just throwing prescriptions at me and then I was out the door. One particularly bad experience I had a psychiatrist basically tell me to kill myself during a crisis. Now though, my current psychiatrist is literally one of the best things to happen to my mental health. They actually listen to me, they understand my history with meds and always make sure I’m comfortable, they check in multiple times a week and during appointments they actually talk to me. It’s to a point where she can immediately tell if I’m not doing well by the tone of my voice or how much I talk. Having a professional that is both knowledgeable and cares is incredible, especially for physical and mental health problems

This is, surprisingly, exactly the story I needed to hear today. It's a need that was capably met by a compassionate expert, funnily enough. Thanks, John!

I loved my childhood dentist so much i used to get excited to go and was very confused when i learned that it’s a common fear. I’m so grateful for kind healthcare workers. They can set a life long precedent in your mind.

Even your least relatable story still feels deeply relatable and important. You are truly a masterful storyteller!

John one of the things i really like about you is the level of privacy you keep in your life. I love your writing, I love being apart of this community, I love getting insights in to how you think, but I've never thought to myself "I feel like I know John". I don't and that's because you keep much of yourself private and I have such a respect for that. Thank you for letting us have these windows in to your life.

This literally sounds like the premise to one of your books. Highly romanticized, out of US location, and an anxious protagonist. 5 stars.

It wouldn’t be a tuesday video without a surprisingly earnest moment - i’m currently in the hospital recovering from surgery and yeah, i relate to the wish for a compassionate expert. but i also almost woke up my roommate laughing because of “the impossible levels of facial symmetry”. wonderful story john, hope you won’t collect anymore of these, seems like you have enough for a lifetime

As a dental student, this is the most relatable story I’ve heard on this channel. Haha (I am relatively new here tho) Great content as always. Love the channel.

There is nothing quite as sweet as the kindness and insight from someone when you don't yet know how much you need it, thank you for sharing your story, it reminded me of the compassion I received in the past from graceful people

I had a doctor who told me she was leaving for a new practice once. I looked up her new place seeing if I could keep seeing her. The practice a "concierge health clinic" had a $25k/year retainer fee so it turned out that I couldn't even really afford to never see her. It was the sort of place that you'd call because your kid broke their leg skiing at the mountain 3 hours out of town and then they'd arrange for a helicopter to come fetch you and while you're flying back to the city they'd call up the best bone doctor around, get them to come in on the weekend and have you sent directly to their hospital to have a cast applied. I suspect your dentist was that sort of dentist.

At a hotel that fancy, when the concierge gets you a dentist, they get you a DENTIST.

I was recently diagnosed with cervical dystonia. Thanks to the passionate expert at the Cleveland clinic I get great treatment. He is leaps and bounds ahead of any other medical expert I've ever had to deal with! Thank goodness I live in a place in time where getting the help you need can be achieved on a Facebook group page and the medical treatments are available like the botox I require to live a normal life. Thanks for your insights John

I hope someone is able to recognize that dentist from your description and let him know how he touched your life. The other possibility is that there are enough Parisian dentists matching that glowing description that it can't be narrowed down to just one. I'm not sure how I'd feel about that.

John, as a person with a genetic enamel disorder and neurodivergence of which one expression is oral fixation, I unfortunately spent a lot of time in dental chairs in my youth. I have to say dentistry was part of my sexual awakening as a teenager. You unknowingly feeding into my fantasies was simultaneously the worst and the best thing to happen to me today.

I've met loads of experts and loads of compassionate people. I can anecdotally confirm the confluence of the two descriptors together in one person aligning with the person needing help at the right moment is rare.
