I had 2 Broncos in my life. The first Bronco lasted 170,000 miles. The second which was an 92 Eddie Bauer Edition was my baby. Had it 8 years and then I ran into tough times and had to sell her in 2006. I cried like a baby the day I sold her. Because I knew it was gonna be a collectors item. GET THE BRONCO !!

I work in a paint store so I've learned a few tricks to getting lids off. If you have another one like that, or if it's rusted down, open it some without demolishing it and then hammer it back down and repeat. The hammering breaks loose most of it while easily trying to open it will legit it more and more until it comes off. And usually it's still usable afterwords.

POR 15 is the best. If you have anything (i.e. a floorpan) that is even thinking about it (rusting), put that on and forget it. If you are using it on the outside of the vehicle, you do have to paint it because it degrades in uv light pretty quick. But if it is under carpet or on the undercarriage and therefore under undercoating, that is all you need to do.

Don't fear the low range! 😜 Seriously, I had a '97 Dodge Dakota 4x4 with the V6, 5-speed manual and 3.55 axles, and often found I needed low range on the more rugged trails. Once I shifted the transfer case, it was like a mountain goat climbing up hills or through snow up to the doors.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned this, but POR-15 will degrade in UV light. You will need to go over the POR with some of that semi-gloss black to protect it from sunlight. Other than that, POR-15 is a fantastic rust encapsulator. For the love of everything that's holy, don't get it on your skin. Love your channel. Keep Rockin'

POR 15 is basically a water cure Polyurethane. In a humid environment it will cure fast and you only take what you need out of the container and seal it back up quick. My guess is humidity is not that big a problem in Arizona. The frame is not in direct sunlight so you should be ok, but anything the is exposed to direct UV should be top coated.
@pauljenkins25013 жыл бұрын
My preference would be for you to mod an old 4x4 rather than a factory new car, but of course you are already having to juggle lots of other projects..... One thing that you and Celine may or may not know - when driving off-road, hold the rim if the steering wheel with your finger tips and thumbs. Do not put your thumb inside the rim of the wheel, because if you hit a rock and the steering kicks back, you can injure or even break a thumb....

POR-15 - Paint Over Rust. I remove anything chunky or flaky or loose and paint it on. You can get it in a spray can or brush it on and it does a great job. I used it on a crappy rear axle housing once, that I didn't care about. It was kind of an experiment. When done, it looked like I spent weeks prepping the housing. Actual time was just long enough to spray it with some brake clean to remove any grease and then the time it took to sloppily brush it on.. Maybe 20 - 30 minutes..

POR15 is great stuff, I’ve been using it for the last 20 years. Make sure you always wear gloves because it’s impossible to get off. Also, putting saranwrap between the can and lid allows it to be easier opened. Ideally you’d put on a second coat, because each coat it quite thin.
@anydaynow013 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've coated differentials with the stuff and nothing has happened to them decades later. I second your recommendation to put on a second coat, especially the areas that will see some sun or will be exposed to possible scraping.

Fun upload! Thanks for the laughs! Makes me happy I kept my 2001 Pathfinder. It has a 5 speed manual! Keeping it forever! Bought a 2020 Insight Touring as a daily driver. So now, I can turn my Pathfinder in to Beastus Maximus! Highly recommend you get a 2001-2004 Pathfinder 4x4 if you want a cheap beater 4x4, if you can fund one. From 2001-2004 they made it with the 3.5 V6 Nissan took 5 years to develop. And that motor is still the backbone of Nissan and Infiniti V6s, (OK, the new ones are a little different and some are 3.7s). As far as I know only the 3.5 SE badged version has a 5 speed manual. But all of them have the same aluminum V6 they put in the 350Z. 240 HP for autos, 250hp for manual. Ton of fun in 2WD on a dirt road in 2nd gear. Basically turns me into Drifty McDriftalot!

Important lesson about POR-15. Don't get it on your clothes. I have a shirt I was wearing one day about 11 years ago that still has a rubberized patch. On the plus side, it hasn't rusted.
@abpsd733 жыл бұрын
Don't wear those nylon painter's coveralls either, POR-15 gets through the weave and wrecks the clothes underneath. Buy the Tyvek coveralls.

POR-15 seals the rust/metal so oxygen can't rust it further. I usually have some small mason jars handy to put the leftover in when I open a can of the stuff, they usually get mangled trying to get them open.
@f1y7rap3 жыл бұрын
@Sarah the 3.3 was never a torque monster and you gave it larger tires, effectively decreasing the gear ratio and forcing the engine to struggle. When wheeling slow and steady is the answer (unless its Deep mud, then its wheelspeed to clear the mud from the tread). Always use low range in the dirt and rocks. Particularly now that you have created an effective lower final ratio. Other option is to regear (out of the question price wise).

Get POR 15 in small cans and have extra stuff around to use it on. You can put Saran Wrap over it before sealing the lid, but best if you can use it all up. Next time you open the leftovers you’ll probably find a hardened crust with some paint underneath.

POR-15 does not convert rust. One of the main advantages is, that this stuff cures with WATER. It even kinda "drys" out light rust and this prevents further rusting. But it is not a Rust converter.

Apologies in advance for writing a book.. I had an 04 xterra I had to use 4 lo on tricky terrain it just seemed perform without worries, yeah they just aren't powerful. I didn't look in the comments but if you haven't already heard or researched it... there's a thing called Lokk and Drop, Lokka Diff locker & replace the diff bushings with new ones designed to lower it and align the axles better on a lifted front end. Something to consider while you have the front diff out, its a pain in bohonkus. But its one of those "while you were there" things you'll appreciate later on. And also I think a low budget off road project xterra would be alot of fun! Well u kinda got one. IMO The xterra doesn't get as much love as it should, seeing how capable it is. And there are alot of other more popular choices, a bronco would be cool too. But that's just my 2 cents. And yeah I will be converting my "new to me" 00 xterra v6 to 4wd once I replace the head gaskets and reseal the motor. It's from Texas and very little rust. And not a complete turd as some parts were missing. 130k miles. And it was 300 dollars. And it was yellow. When I did was reassembling the engine from its basket case condition to see if it was even fixable. I pulled out the original spark plugs. Yeah for real. Sorry for the geeky long read.
