Restoration job or not, I love that you are doing it for your sister. Locker hubs are definitely the way to go as long as your sister remembers to lock and unlock them.

As a (sadly) former Xterra owner I believe the auto hubs only engage if you are able to move forward but then would stay engaged. I may be wrong but never had any problems with mine. Also was taught to not come to a complete stop when bedding pads. Love your channel content, especially the Xterra, hope to have another some day.

Now that you have a REAL shop (lol), you should look into getting a media blast cabinet. Awesome for removing rust, old paint and it puts a nice satin finish on metal parts in general.

They do unlock, but almost immediately lock again when the shaft starts turning backwards. Rocking back and forth trying to get unstuck can be really hard on them. I prefer manual, but auto hubs work great too for most people.

The auto hubs will stick in the unlock position if the 4x4 isn’t used often. I bought the warn manual locking hubs.

My buddy had a Nissan pick up truck that had those types of hubs we took him apart 3 or 4 different times to find out that's how they worked and yeah it's pretty rough on them when 'rock' crawling. P.S. can anyone guess what color the next car is that Sarah's gonna do a review on?💅LOL!!!

The auto hubs look for change of direction and axle input to lock and unlock. If the axles aren’t turning in the hubs in reverse they’ll unlock.

Always open the bleed screw when compressing the caliper, I've seen ABS units ruined by forcing brake fluid backwards through them. It also allows you to contain the mess with a simple hose and container setup.

The auto hubs I've dealt with would unlock and then re-lock when changing directions. For average daily driver people that only use 4x4 for an occasional snowy road, they are adequate. The lock/unlock/re-lock cycle usually rears its ugly head and breaks the hub from shock loads when a driver is rocking the vehicle back and forth, jamming the throttle without allowing some low speed rotation to let things re-engage.

With the old school hubs, it was always known to reverse a bit after you lock, or unlock your hubs to ensure proper function. Don't you remember riding in grandpa's truck 🤣
