The auto hubs I've dealt with would unlock and then re-lock when changing directions. For average daily driver people that only use 4x4 for an occasional snowy road, they are adequate. The lock/unlock/re-lock cycle usually rears its ugly head and breaks the hub from shock loads when a driver is rocking the vehicle back and forth, jamming the throttle without allowing some low speed rotation to let things re-engage.
