Hi Esther this is Susie I'm in Illinois and you are such an inspiration. I did want to tell you a few things about the bronze fennel, I grow it as well as milkweed, you know the milkweed is for the monarchs . The bronze fennel, dill, parsley, and rue, are all habitat plants for the Black Swallowtail butterfly. So next time you grab a piece of bronze fennel and Squishy between your fingers, just make sure you don't have a butterfly caterpillar or an egg.

Thank you. Yes that's who I grow it for. The swallowtails. Thanks for the tip I'll keep that in mind.

How do you keep up with the two plots and your home garden? They all look good. I'm definitely impressed!
@EsthersGardeningAdventures7 ай бұрын
Hahaha. Good question. I have no life lol. But seriously it is a lot of work. I put in probably 3-6 hrs a week on average, but more than double that in the spring I'd guess.

I enjoyed starting my asparagus by seed. I did them in 2021. I also direct sowed some the same year. I harvested maybe 5 spears this year to eat, left the others because they were still pencil thin. But about a dozen popped up. I added a couple of crowns of purple asparagus this spring. Great tour! Things look great!!

Makes me feel better to see those jugs still on your deck 😂 Also some jugs I reseeded because they were duds this year.

We had such a mild winter here (6b) that most of my snapdragons survived. My bronze fennel came back and a bazillion fennel babies. I feel a bit guilty about weeding them out. It's always such a rush to get stuff done each spring. We have had a ton of rain and therefore a ton of weeds. I grew some natives via winter sowing and today i managed to slog out to the native flowerbed and try to tame it enough to transplant them! The list grows longer everyday! 😂

Great to see you! Garden looks great! All of us have been busy. My planting has been a glorious experience. My comfrey is blooming and I’ve cut off some to ferment for fertilizer.

everything is looking good. I imagine it's hard upkeep doing garden plots away from home. adding travel time would make me less likely to keep close tabs. Youre amazing!!
@EsthersGardeningAdventures7 ай бұрын
Yes it does make it harder to keep up having to drive to the plots. Luckily the drive is relatively fast.

Hello Esther, thank you for sharing your successes of all the different variety of plants you grow. You influenced me to try growing Jimmy Nardello peppers, I got great germination and the seedlings look very healthy so far. Best of luck for your summer growing season!

Oh nice. That's a wonderful pepper to grow! I hope you enjoy them as much as I have.

Nice idea about bucket gravity system! We did that one year for squash because we couldn’t reach them. I’m wondering if yours will make the skip over to next bed though. The tomatoes do seem to catch up to each other. I think the WS onions I did look better than inside grown. Had year old seed that didn’t germinate indoors then one variety of new was bad seed. I showed them too thick-next year sow thin. I just noticed our lettuce looked excellent and was tasty and all of a sudden it’s turning bitter and not bolting. It’s so fun when there are surprise volunteers. Watermelon needs a lot of water-good candidate for new water system. I just attacked the poison Ivy patch today and threw a ton of collected seeds on it after we tilled. It will be an on going battle for a while and if need be I will paint on herbicide. Lol, I just seen seeds for mini roses 😅 that is Mini! Oh Wow, I sowed old Amish Cockscombs in WS and all Three packs germinated 😂. Would you like some?😂 Everything looks like it’s booming! I’ve been watching ‘Grow Up’ and he decided to move his allotment stuff next to another allotment he has and it was a major undertaking, but he had some help. You may find it interesting.

Good point on the bucket gravity system. It does skip over to the next bed. I had to let the cups fill up (air purge) with water one at a time via the system and the water made it all the way to the end. It did take a little longer to get there though.

I’m SO interested to hear how you like the thirsty earth set up. I was so close to purchasing it this year but just couldn’t spend the money. But it’s on my list to purchase for next year!

Nice. I'll be glad to share my thoughts as the season progresses. The initial set up does take a little bit more work than I expected but the how-to videos the company provides were excellent and very clear, which I appreciated.

Please share your method for removing poison ivy. We have not had it on our property for the 15 years we have been living there and suddenly it is overtaking everything! Crazy!

Hi Esther, thank you for giving me courage to winter sow! My garden is doing well. However, my zucchini (2 plants) are only producing female blooms in abundance! I have no other squash, except cucumber. Can I use these flowers to pollinate?
@EsthersGardeningAdventures7 ай бұрын
Give it some time. The squash will start producing males soon. They usually are inconsistent at the beginning
