For today's review we're looking at Comix Zone, developed for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by Sega Technical Institute, a game certainly praiseworthy for it's style and how impressive it looked for the 16 bit console, but style means nothing without substance...

I had a very similar experience when I first played this game. It felt like a lot of potential wasted. This was when I first played it on an old Sega Genesis. Years later, trying it again, there is no room for button mashing. I was "playing it wrong" according to some people, but in reality, I was playing it like Final Fight, Double Dragon or Streets of Rage. If you play it like one of those games, which are more leaning toward a button mashing playstyle, yes it will be a bad time. I revisited the game later and discovered that there is more strategy, resource management, etc to play the game and get anywhere in it. However, I did not beat the game for some of the reasons you pointed out. It gives you options but they are a bit convoluted and tedious. It starts to become a chore to play, and after playing through several times, it finally gets to a point where I say. Eh, I'll take a break. But I've never come back to it. It is certainly a product of it's time. I think its a GREAT concept and idea, but not for everyone. I will say they could update it with some more modern features and it'd probably be great. I completely understand your frustration with it. Games are supposed to be fun. This one had some really bad slowdown when it came out as well.

This game teaches you to use your brain rather than brute force everything. It's really not that hard, you just gotta play smartly. You almost never need to actually lose health breaking obstacles unless you've messed up somewhere.

That, and there's actually a lot more than "9" moves. Up-Down Attack is an Somersaulting Axe Kick, Down-Up Attack is a Drop-Kick and Back-Forward Attack is a Shoulder Slam. Sure, these moves cost some health and some enemies are immune to them in certain situations, but using them saves you time and in the long run, health, ironically. And that there's more to this beat-em-up than just mashing one button, it's mashing one button whilst's finessing the D-PAD with high, mid and low attacks to break and trick the enemy's guard.

Guy refuses to use items, never tries to swap up his button combo, never attempts to learn the level or secrets, and wants to belly ache that the game was rough. Also Sketch Turner is gimmicky because it's comic. Like Sketch isn't the only comic book character named after what he does. Or do we give Starfire trash because her name is Kori Ander. And yeah he dresses like a dude from his time period. God forbid the Doomguy dresses in power armor because it's edgy...

Some advice next time you play (im not trying to change your mind): -Use the items the game gives you smartly for example you can use the dynamite to explode the flaming barrels and traps and you can use the rat to set up some of the traps and enemies. -On combat use the high - low strategy (one standing normal punch fast followed by a low sweep, not a low kick, a low sweep fast followed by another standing normal puch and another low sweep, you get the point) it will always break the enemy defense and the combat will flow faster. -Use the rat to search for items in the scenery ,she will find energy drinks, bombs to destroy objects (for example the big iron door in the beggining of page 2) and power ups. The rat can one kill certain enemies like the girls in the second chapter. -Some doors have secret switches hidden in the scenery -You can toss enemies against objects to destroy them (example the fans on page 2) and use the shoulder smash to destroy objects to lose less energy instead of punches and kicks. -Map the guard button and dont use auto guard and use a 6 pad controller. -You gain a continue after you beat the first level.😉 This is not a bad game you just need to learn from it every time you play and die, thats how i finish it back in the day.

You didn't even bother yourself with learning this game before you review it. Oh, man. You picked up the rodent but you didn't put it down in the comic panels to find you super useful inventory items. There are many tactics in this game on how to use your inventory. The rodent does much more. It bites female enemies to throw them off the panel! Also, you don't have to wreck down the temple door. You just hang from the wooden post in front of it and the door slides up! The first boss fight is the easiest. Spot a barrel in the far side of the panel. Then easily slide it under the monster while he/she lights up the barrel with one of those flame breaths. Then just let the lit barren burn the monster to dust while you chill out. One of the shallowest reviews I've ever come across on this game.😑

My friend, you simply do not understand how useful the items are. Think of this game more as a puzzle/beat em up hybrid. You can't just punch everything until you win. Lots of the things you complain about in this video have work arounds if you really look around and use items. Sorry dude

I respectfully disagree. The game is a classic of the Mega Drive. It's unique and while it can have moments of being unfair it also gives you a lucky break when you least expect it. Put it this way: I'm terrible at video games and even I managed to complete this game.

As a guy who has zero childhood memories of this game, as someone who emulates everything, who started playing sega games well into the 2000's and someone who completely agrees the middle part of Comix Zone is the most bullshit one... it's impossible to agree with this review the first few times I played the game I got my ass kicked by everything but the problem really should solve itself if you put some creativity into the game, most if not everything in Comix Zone follows a rock-paper-scissors logic, you'll get drained of a huge chunk of hp if you use a move or you'll get by fast and easy if you use a different one, yeah of course, it's not explicitly said so (unless it is in the manual which I of course don't have) but as I said, it's solved by pure curiosity, shoulder bash an empty drum and it'll pop in one hit, crane kick the scorpion-bat things and they'll pop in one hit, release roadkill in front of the braid women and they'll jump to their death I refuse to call Comix Zone a puzzle game but most frames have a "hidden" way to solve them, quotation marks on hidden because they literally give you the means to do it every single time so it's not even the correct word To me Comix Zone is probably in my top-20 games in it's console, definitely not the best and by god I'll NEVER consider buying an original because I'm just not that attached to it, but it's a much better game than portrayed here

all of this is honestly just an unpopular opinion followed by skill issue, well not even skill issue more so just refusing to adapt to the game mechanics. the game in my opinion is "Ok" definitely not as bad as your making it out to be. It's a beat'em up. from watching your video while taking notes on it to write this response, it's like you're going into the game with the expectation of it being a traditional fighting game or Streets of rage 2. I'm just going to tackle some points you've made and give my opinion on them. I'm not trying to change your mind on anything it's your opinion, but I can give critical criticism on you opinion of this game, 1) "You can attack from pipes and ropes but you'll rarely do this as it takes too long over simply using combos." -Attacking from ropes and pipe are safer to do since you will not risk-taking damage from enemies. 2) "a number of items you can pick up which I won't go into because half the time I left them and didn't bother using them even if I did pick them up" -the game relies on item management so you can progress easier while learning the game mechanics 3) "all the fighting in this game boils down to nothing more than button bashing" -Again, it's a beat'em up. That's what you do in all of them. final fight, SOR, Sailor moon, river city, etc. 4) "Problem number two presents its self-right away (complaining about the reuse of enemies)" -This game is not the only game that reuses enemies. look at Mario, Final Fantasy. even modern games reuse enemies. to complain about it in a beat'em up is just strange. If the combat is a big issue well let me tell you that using punch combos is not the way to go. the high and low kick combo is the best way to deal with most enemies in the game. 5) "Problem number 3 barrel and an enemy at the same time complaining about chip damage to health when hitting objects" -They give you items to deal with objects that you literally said you don't bother using or picking up because you said multiple times throughout the video that they are useless. You cannot complain about this if you refuse to adapt to the games mechanics and use what they are giving you. 6) "no lives or continues you have to do the whole thing in one life" -There are continues that they reward you with for completing entire chapters. So, your rewarded for playing and progressing. 7) "tedious repetitive combat items which are next to useless" - Numbers 2, 4, and 5. This game is heavy on learning how to item manage and using what's need to progress easier. If you are not willing to learn the basic core game mechanic (and based on your review you weren't) than of course you are not going to have a good time.

I admit I never beat the game, but each boss has a weakness 1st boss: After she gets stunned, go to the other side of the arena, have her set the barrel on fire, and push it under her 2nd boss: Slam him into the wall where his nails are, Final boss: Use the rocket booster when he's at ground level. Plus, the tips help. Hell, in one room, she said to use Roadkill to chase away the female monks, over and over till you or them are dead

I got a saga mini at home, I thought this and castlevenia where the best games on the console. The comic zone concept is so novel and the dialogue is very clever. Obviously u have a diffrent viewpoint but seriously I really like this game.

I worked on this game (coloring and cleaning up some of the art). While I don't think you gave this game the play or attention it deserved, I will say that it is the ONLY game, that I worked on, that I was not able to finish without resorting to using cheats! (but I was also never very good at 'fighting' games)

I liked the game & I've completed it many times. 1990's games were meant to be tedious, I could probably mention some other games that are more tedious than this one. But again, its not supposed to be a walk in the park. I may be wrong, but I think there's a difficulty settings in the options menu. Developers from that era purposely designed it this way, its a strategy they used to draw the game out more. Yes, while I played the game, I died a lot & I saw the same levels a lot more than others that I care to remember but, the more you play, the better you become. Yes the game can be tedious, but do I hate it? Definitely not!

i didn't even know that you could hold the attack button to do the special move i didn't realize this since I was little until now i was a bit naive and when I got to the end of the first chapter i kept falling into the bottomless pit when I was trying to jump to the other side i was a bit dumb at the time i don't know why but i want to finish this game so bad it's 1:01am and im writing this so whatever no big deal starting the game over and over again started to get over my nerves 😡 when I got to the final boss one of the earlier times i got the bad ending for the first time i remember crying and punching the TV the game certainly made me mad and I got to the point to where I didn't want to play anymore i didn't even touch the game or select it anymore until many years later this happened the game was fun at first but me being 18 it's not anymore

I´m reluctant to disagree, because i don´t want to go f... But... the rat is only good to pull levers? Combat is bad indeed, but i´m often so flush with bombs because of that rodent that i barely need to throw punches! Not to say what happens when one releases the rat around the spinning hair girl assassin. Almost every screen has a hidden trick or exploit to experiment with, including the 3 boss screens...wich i don´t even save bombs for anymore, it´s easier to spring them on their own traps.

I really loved this game when I was a kid, now looking back at it, it is kind of short, and some mid levels are kind of bland compared to the rest, but the art style, music and combat are great for the time IMO Never knew you could do that paper plane super tho, you learn something new every day I guess haha

Gotta admit I do really like this game - fighting each enemy has their own weaknesses over just spamming controls. Will admit - getting damage off every inanimate object is just poor game design! I think originality wins for me on this one despite the stupid bonkers story. But hey 90s! Loved the video

This game was so damn hard I wasn’t able to beat it until they ported it to the iPhone because that version lets you save and has a button that lets you rewind by 15 seconds, though it balances out the latter by giving it a cooldown. For the record the shoulder bash breaks stuff with less damage to you. Also you actually can get two extra continues in the original but only if you manage to beat the even numbered levels. Apparently Mortus feels bad you got so far only to die so he respawns you in order to be sporting. Additionally you can use environmental stuff and the tools to solve puzzles and kill the bosses quickly or knock enemies into environmental obstacles to break them. For instance, you can combat roll under the first boss, trick it into igniting a barrel with its ranged attack, and then push the barrel under the boss to kill it. Finally roadkill can also be used to find hidden objects if you deploy him near them and deploying him near that one female enemy with the whip hair will cause her to run away in fear.

You know what, I actually really like the music! It's got that jagged midi guitar that was so indicative of the mega drive's soundchip, no way it would have sounded anywhere near as good had it been made for the snes

Hey just wanted to say that this is how you do a proper negative review. I think we all loved avgn but it's awesome to hear actual critiques for games. It was a very innovative game for the time but i think it was stuck in that limbo where they made the game too hard and unbalanced because arcades wanted all your quarters and developers kept that a thing in home games as well for some reason Roadkill pulling items out of the paper itself and the paper airplane were read as heck. Those bo staff guys are so poorly balanced. Jump kicks are about the only savior of this beat em up like a lot back in the day.

I always rewind your intro like 3-4 times just to keep hearing that opening PS2 soundbite. I was the first out of my friends to own a PS2 and I'll never forget that moment of booting it up for the first time. Of course I had no PS2 games, the initial console launch had NO pack in game. I could do nothing but check out the PS1 backwards compatibility and its "smooth" graphic enhancer.

Dude there is a video of someone just breezing through the game on KZbin. They made it look like the game was a joke but that's totally deceiving because there is no way he hadn't play it'd over 150 times to master it. He clearly knows every little..which you pretty much need to know to beat it on top of the ridiculous enemies and bosses. I don't recall GameFaqs being around just yet when this came out, so I never was able to beat it. It fell under the "not big enough to warrant a strategy guide independently or in Tips N' Tricks..and ya no GameFaqs to find out how to beat it, so ya just overall fucked. It had such potential if the enemies hit like a ton of bricks and there wasn't hazards everywhere, including transversing the comic pages having to attack it and take damage. A truly confusing aspect of a game that has one skill level (the worst games)

Played this one a couple of years ago when I got the Mega Drive mini for the kid. It was not a good game, despite looking good, animating well, and working very well within the palette limits of the console... it's not the 512 palette limit that gets developers on the mega drive, but only a total of 4 palettes of 16 colors for a total of 64, but realistically 61 with transparency. It kinda misses the point of what made beat'em ups like SoR series enjoyable: lots of enemies that aren't damage sponges and that force you to prioritize targets in that Doom kinda way. That being said though, I did replay and finish it on retroarch with some gamegenie cheats (much less spongy enemies, no damage on barrels, and 50% health for player) and it made all the difference. Oh, and I used an MD+ for CD audio music. Makes it sound more like the mid-90s grunge music it was trying for. As you said, if the game's not going to play fair, why should I?

Oh god only 1 life?! sometimes with old games you can forgive certain flaws because of limitations but....games had given players more than 1 life LONG before 1995....oh wait there ARE continues. The ruthlessness is so frustrating, more than if the game had no redeeming qualities- could've been hugely celebrated if only it was more playable (which, in fairness, is a pretty massive factor when it comes to video games) it's like they wanted to make a missed oppurtunity

You need to realize that this game takes 30 minutes or less to beat when you're good enough to do so. They had to make the game hard or else people wouldn't paid $90+ USD in today's money to go home and beat it in 30 minutes. I wish the game were longer, but I guess the development started late and they needed to rush it out because it came out at the end of the Genesis life, or maybe they ran out of space on the cartridge because of how limited they were back then because of the cost of memory; I'm talking 5 MB being the biggest Sega Genesis game back then, and yes; that's MB and not GB.

Spot on review! I'm not a fan either! Graphics are nice, sfx nice, music everyone loves bar me! I just find it sounds like farty guitars with no real depth behind it. Overall I find the gameplay a bit tedious too! So we are pretty much in agreement bar the music 😂
