When I was a poor black kid living in the inner city projects back in the 70's. Funny Girl came on tv and I just happened to watch it. She blew me away. I had never heard a voice like that before. It was life changing. I started buying her records whenever I could afford them and would lock myself in my room and listen to her music for hours. She brought something beautiful to an otherwise bleak and miserable childhood. Where I was surrounded by ugliness and horrible people who bullied me daily. I would escape in her music to take me away from all of misery that I faced daily. I have loved her ever since. And will forever be grateful to her for what she brought to my miserable existance that my life back then.

Stephen Greer- I felt the same as an adolescent in high school. Bullied, thought I would never get out of a rural town of idiots. I was suffering from depression by the age of 16. I first heard her in “The Way We Were”. There was such beauty and vulnerability in her that I identified with. I bought some of her recordings and I would skip school and just listen to her music and somehow feel a little bit better. And I’ve loved her since.

Steven... Incredible, isn't it? That Art and Music transcends the every day mundane pain of this world and transports us to a place of beauty, of hope, of the 'ideal' we hold in our hearts-- that our common every day doings of kindness, generosity, and respect can, and will, make this planet more a place of such beauty that the 'ideal' is no longer a thing of 'grandeur' but a living reality.

If this scene doesn’t convince you she deserved her Oscar...nothing will!
@richardlee84954 жыл бұрын
this scene is WHY she won the Oscar. she had recorded the number, then told director Wiliam Wyler she wanted to do it live. he agreed. a risky choice, for sure. but Wyler knew it would work, because Barbra had smart instincts, and wanted, for some reason, to do it that way. and it did. still her best performance in a movie, her first. she thinks so, too, when asked. but Wyler brought it forth, and, for that, she has to be, maybe, just a little bit grateful, you know?

One interesting fact of this recording is Barbra was actually singing the first part of the song "live". The last part was recorded. This was Barbra's suggestion because she had to cry and be very emotional and the only way she could convey those emotions was to do it live. You can tell when listening to the track when the recording part starts. It is at the climax of the song.

I love how throughout the movie she’s so head over heels in love with him but never comes right out and says it. She dances around it and makes jokes but never as bluntly as she does in the end… when it’s just about too late. It’s almost as the the thing she was chasing this whole time wasn’t fame or anything of the sort, just to be loved and she thinks it’s gone. So one last plea to end it all. Wonderful movie!

Who wouldn't have fallen in love with the absolutely gorgeous Omar Sharif ? Makes you wonder what could have been and maybe how it might have changed the world for the better. What absolute perfection in her singing...just beyond comprehension. Hard to imagine conveying SO much raw and beautifully touching emotion and still hit it out of the ballpark - times 1,000. And...she was SO young then.

+Cindy Beshara God, Holy and Wondrous, gifted her with a voice unlike, and in my opinion, beyond any other. Then Miss Streisand shared her amazing gift with all of us. My sincere THANKS to both.

Using fanny brice’s signature tune to close the movie was such a wise choice. Whether live or not , Barbra’s performance just works so well and Wyler was a genius. The scene was distilled to its bare minimum and shows that, Barbra singing in complete emptiness/black backdrop on the big screen. And that’s all you need. Barbra. The final seconds as she finishes the last note and drops her hand, and cut to black. Amazing. While she was faultless thru the whole movie, the ending guaranteed her win at the oscars. It’s truly breathtaking, bet u, people at the premiere were holding their breath, waiting to cheer

I remember in the early days of her career that many said she did not have the "Hollywood" look and even tried to persuade her to have a nose job...!! I have so much admiration for this strong woman.... but of course it helps if you have the greatest female voice of her generation.

Out of the ballpark! The absolute best because she is an actress who sings and there is a fully developed character in each of her songs.

My mother loves this song and I remember listening to this as a child 40 plus years ago. My father died 20 years ago and she never fully got over death of our beloved father, her husband of 33 years. She's dying now and we will play this at her funeral.

I knew this song from Glee but only recently did I watch this movie for the first time and really enjoyed it. Her performance was brilliant and we don’t even need to talk about her talent, let alone her voice. 🧡🧡🧡 And this song is stuck in my head it’s so emotional 💔

I remember seeing this film as a kid when it came out and absolutely insisting that my mother come with me when I went to see it again. LOL! I don't think she was as wowed as I was, but I appreciate that she humored me and went to see it all the same!

Greatest finale in the history of film. When I saw this for the 1 time at age 8, the first of a 1000, I was totally spellbound. I knew then that there was a G-d as no human being could have that much talent; there was definitely devine intervention. Nothing equeals seeing it on the 70mm screen. This is talent!!!
