My guy is a electronic music grammy award and dude and also does a ton of mastering for Kompakt, and you guys do theexact same thing on the printside, he always uses analog and routes a little different but having the printed track inside the stems proyect is a heck of a hack! Thanks mixbustv, these rapid fire shots of info are really helping out. A id love to check out a new vid series from the channel. Thanks for putting out these vids, tru intentions man

I'm gonna try this. My mentor said that running your mix to just the master fader causes a bit of a delay while tracking. That's why he has a similar method to yours of using an AUX track as a master (or for metering as he calls it) then routes out to a master fader. Very interesting 👌

Question. When printing stems, wether it’s different group elements of the mix (drums, bass, strings) or instrumental version etc.. how do you maintain the processing from the mix bus such as the compression when the whole mix was hitting it all together so each stem or print versions still have the similar processing effect & gain reduction as the whole mix version? so when i pull up the faders to 0db of all the stems i printed, it will sound like the stereo official mix.. Hope I didn’t confuse u. Thanks David. Looking forward to your thoughts. ✌🏽 hopefully u can do a video on this as well in the near future.

@paulrucker1889
@paulrucker1889 5 жыл бұрын
Yea, the sum of all stems, if all processed additionally at the mix bus one by one same as the stereo mix, will not perfectly match the stereo mix that goes through the same processing. But it can be close. To match perfectly, you'd have to do all your 'mix bus processing' at each stem separately and no mix bus processing at all. That's a lot of extra work. I've never been asked to do that since the way the stems get used is for a different result anyway. I'm speaking from tv underscore music viewpoint but it should apply across the board.
@SleepNoMore720
@SleepNoMore720 5 жыл бұрын
Paul Rucker Interesting. Good point Paul. Another way to possibly do it which I haven’t tried is to 1. bypass the processing on the mix bus. 2. bounce a copy of the whole stereo mix, add it to the session & mute it. 3. add the same compressor or chain that is on the mix bus to every stem you’re printing. 4. Then going back to the muted bounced track, set it to prefader & side chain it to trigger the compressors set on all the stem busses and print. That might get it close but not perfect. Hope that made sense.. definitely can’t wait for David to make a video on this. 🙌🏽

So big question here, I hear people say for bass drops (in metal songs) to keep it outside your 2 bus. Does this mean the bass drop track will not be routed through the 2 bus and only to the master track? I'm confused because the master you said still goes through your 2 bus, so wouldn't the bass drop still be effected by the compressor on your 2 bus and duck everything when hitting?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know who said that but, it makes little sense so me. But it also depends what method of mixing and what context who said it uses. I'm guessing he doesn't want the bass to overtrigger the 2bus compressor, so it sends it to his master fader (which is not routed like mine obviously of it would be completely useles) and bypasses the 2bus compression. I think that's not only not necessary, but you leave one of the main elements out of the 2bus compression which doesn't help anything, it's called 2bus because everything goes there. If the problem is the bass overtriggering the compressor there are several better options: 1) use a compressor with an HPF filter, 2) if the bass triggers your 2bus compressor (on the whole track) chances are it's too loud. 3) automate levels 4) Use an external sidechain of your mix without the bass and still send the bass to the 2bus so everything has the same movement (dynamic) and color. I know I can be annoyingly right

Also I think I understood them wrong, they said keep the bass drop outside your mix bus and have it only hit your 2 bus. Something like that, but yes it was to bypass the compressor or something. I read it more on a FB Group discussion and we know how those can be.

What I don't understand, is if everything goes into the MixBus Channel/Track, where all the signals come from in Master 1, since Master 1 output is routed to MixBus? Because as in your video, if you lower the Master 1 fader, the signal going to the Mixbus Channel/Track also lowers, so all the signals must go through the Master 1 fader/track first, no?

Can't you use a group in group track in ProTools? I use something similar and call it rear bus, for parallel compression, etc. Maybe the terminology is only different. In my DAW an aux is more or less like an aux on a desk. It would be some sort of hassle to do it that way. I'm just curious.

@@mixbustv I just said what I was using such a track for, I watched your video, you know ;-). Thanks for answering. I guess what's called group in my DAW is quite the same, like the auxes in PT.

Hi David. I have a question. I like how you can push into your mix bus chain with the master fader . I have a Burl Audio B32 Vancouver 32-channel Mix Bus . I route everything to the burl b32 (kick on output 1 snare output 2 and so on). The sum comes back into a pair of input to pro tools and I make another track to print the mix. How can I use your work flow with my summing amp. I would like to route my mix to the master fader and then push into the burl transformers. John

What would it be the difference if you use 2 aux channels instead the master buss? I mean routing the whole mix to an unprocessed aux which would be routed to the final mix processed aux, this way you can push your mix to the final mix chain in the second aux just moving the first non processed aux channel's fader. Not sure if that's possible in protools since I use Logic. Congrats for your useful Channel.

What I don't understand is, if the inserts on the master fader are post fader anyway, couldn't you just route all of your tracks to the master fader and use that as your 2bus and it would have the exact same result as this? The only benefit I can see is that you have an additional fader after all of those inserts (your mixbus fader). Do you need to alter the level of this fader?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 4 жыл бұрын
The only benefit you see IS the benefit, because you can automate pre and post 2bus chain.
