Hello and Welcome!
In this video, I share my easy homemade oat bread recipe - soft, hearty, and perfect for any meal. Plus, I walk you through my frugal shopping finds and simple weekly meal ideas to help you save money while eating well!
Homemade Oat Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
• ½ cup rolled oats
• 1 cup water (for soaking oats)
• 1 tsp instant yeast
• 1 tsp sugar
• 1 tsp salt
• ½ cup lukewarm water (for activating yeast)
• Splash of neutral oil (about 1 tbsp)
• 1 cup of warm water
• 3 cups all-purpose or bread flour
• Optional: Seeds for decoration or mixing
Instructions:
1. Soak the Oats:
• In a bowl, soak the oats in 1 cup of water for 40-50 minutes until softened.
2. Activate the Yeast:
• In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast, sugar, and salt in ½ cup of lukewarm water.
• Wait 10 minutes or until the mixture becomes foamy.
3. Mix the Dough:
• In a large mixing bowl, combine the foamy yeast mixture, soaked oats, splash of oil, 1 cup of warm water and flour.
• Stir until a rough dough forms.
4. First Rise:
• Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let the dough rise in a warm spot for about 2 hours until doubled in size.
5. Kneading and Resting:
• Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead briefly to form a smooth dough.
• Return it to the bowl, cover, and let rest for 40 minutes.
• Knead again, then allow it to rest for another 40 minutes.
6. Shape and Prep:
• Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased cast iron frying pan or your preferred baking pan.
• Optionally, make 3 shallow cuts on top with a sharp knife and sprinkle seeds if desired.
7. Bake:
• Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
• Bake for 50 minutes until the crust is golden and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
8. Cool:
• Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Enjoy your hearty, rustic oat bread! Would you like any creative variations for your next loaf?

Thank you with all my heart ❤ Vera for the bread recipe. Your meals looked so good. I just got back from the store and everything was just so expensive. I live in upstate NY and our prices are just to high. Thank you again for the bread recipe. Can't wait to make some bread. ❤❤❤❤❤😊

You are very welcome! If needed you might add a bit more flour. I like mine a bit softer. Also sometime I like adding oats for a change, seeds, olives, sundry tomatoes. Other time I bake in a rectangular baking pan this way I have enough dough for a couple of burger buns. Agree with the high prices. Same here, and being creative with meals helps. Have a lovely weekend! 💐❤️

So… you’re part of the chocolate sisterhood 😄. Chocolate is actually good, I have one square a day of the darkest chocolate, two if I’m naughty 😂. I’ll do my shopping on Tuesday, it’s the 15% cash back day on certain goods at my supermarket. Have a great Sunday! ❤

Vera, thank you for the bread recipe. I’m going to make it today. I’ve never had oat bread and it looks really good. I make lots of soups in the winter and it will go with my soups wonderfully. Variations would be nice to see too.

Hello, Please let me know how it turns out. I like mine a bit softer, but if you feel it is too soft just add more flour. I forgot to mention when I knead the dough I add a bit of oil. I keep in the freezer and it lasts me for a week. Enjoy! ❤️💐

I love making bread! I’ll try your oat recipe! I was wondering, do you think your homemade salad dressing with the sun dried tomatoes would be good on cooked pasta? I think it would be with a little grated Parmesan on it❤️

Hi Julie, For sure, I did add to penne and bow pasta salads. Adding Parmesan on it, it is like “icing on a cake” yammm😊 Please let me know the outcome. Have a lovely day!
