Some of y'all have asked me to put together a video about my live looping rig. So I finally did! I hope this answers some of your questions. This vid goes into the gear that I'm currently using, how things are routed, and a few Mobius Looper parameters. :)
Thanks!

great video. I'm just getting started with mobius and would like to know how you've got the tracks grouped so that you can record across all tracks at the same time. I've set up my first three tracks as group A and then in the midi bindings I've set the function record to group A. Is there anything else i need to do? it just doesn't seem to be working for me. TIA

One thing I forgot to mention in the vid, is that Mobius looper is not updated very frequently, and is only available as 32-bit software. I have to run a 32-bit version of Ableton Live for it to work as a plug-in.

Thanks for posting this video. It was super inspiring and eye opening. I have struggled with the (Built in) Ableton Looper for years because of the latency that you get and your video pushed me to explore Mobius more. After a couple days of reading the documentation I got it all set up and working and latency free! Wanted to let you know that I run 64bit Ableton and got the Mobius 32bit to work with it by using a piece of software called J-Bridge jstuff.wordpress.com/jbridgem/ It creates a 64bit version of your 32bit plugins. Worked very well for me. Also, at only about 10Euros it is the least expensive, most useful software I have purchase in a long time. Thanks again , and happy looping!

wow. i really wish you went completely through the entire routing. like point to point of every line. im still confused. Like where is the Strymon Timeline? before or after Mobius? If your recording delay fx-ed audio, how are you avoiding the loop end cutting of the delay tail? The Ableton sends? what are they? are they the monitor and pa etc? either way why four sends?? sounds like your stutter edits are able to be looped. is that right? is that in Mobius or ableton? how? I really have so little idea about how this rig is working.

Hey man, incredible setup. I've been a live looper for around 9 years now (using the Rc-300), and have recently acquired the softstep 2 to start to expand my looping horizon (inspired by you). Unfortunately, ableton live has a finicky loop machine, and I can't for the life of me get my softstep 2 to work with Mobius, nor get mobius to work with ableton as a plugin. If there is a simple explanation for either of these questions, I would REALLY appreciate it if you helped me out. If there is a more complex answer, I wouldn't expect it, but I would be indebted to you if you answered it.

Great video and I'm loving the sounds as well! I've chopped and changed between Möbius, SooperLooper and Ableton's built in looper a few times over the years and have currently settled on pure Ableton, with 2 looping tracks controlled by a Softstep 2. Given the 32-bit restriction, I'm interested what you find Möbius lets you do that you'd struggle to do with Ableton Looper?

Thank you! :) I haven't been able to figure out an elegant way to sync and switch back and forth between multiple Ableton Loopers while recording multiple tracks, which is what I do within Mobius. I spent about a week building an Ableton session full of dummy clips and MIDI commands to try to achieve this, but it ended up being too hard to keep track of everything. I also really like Mobius' visual feedback-helpful for me to keep track of many simultaneous tracks and loops :)

Hey! I commented on this video a while back when I was trying to get Mobius setup. I have a new problem... and I have scoured the internet trying to solve it. I can not, for the life of me, route audio to tracks 5-8. More specifically, access more any of the input ports other than 1-4. I don't want to clog up your comments section, I was wondering if I could shoot you the details privately? Or simply tell me if under the "Audio To" section of your tracks do you have 8 options, or just 3 or 4? Thanks!

hi there! You're amazing:) I am just now trying to figure out if I can hack Ableton + Mobius, or if I should just keep it simple and keep going with my Boss 300. The problem is, in bigger performance spaces I run into audio quality problems with Boss… it seems that it compresses preexisting tracks that I trigger and do vocal and keyboard looping on top of. I was hoping using Ableton and Mobius would solve this… but I am a little intimidated. Theoretically I'd like to use my electric guitar, keys and vocals to loop live and trigger clips of pre-recorded audio from Ableton.

No prob :) If you have a halfway decent Mac or PC, you can get started on the cheap. Mobius looper is free software. My MacBook is 6 years old and runs it just fine. The Presonus audio interface is also a great value. If you want stay real simple, there are a bunch of decent pedal loopers on the market.

Thanks for the tour! It gives me a few ideas. You say that mobius has a steep learning curve? That's an understatement. Aside from reading the entire manual(s) (Which I've done several times over the past few months), is there any direction that you can point me in to even get a basic set going for Ableton? Everything that I've tried doesn't work at all for what I'm trying to do and I end up with very basic set up issues. THanks again! Cheers.

just for clarification, at 7:23, Switch Quantize is a setting for when you switch between loops, not a setting for using a physical switch like a button on a controller as you seem to imply.
@jregras
@jregras 3 жыл бұрын
incorrect, it absolutely quantizes the command to the loop: enabled as such, if you hit mute for example, it will not execute mute function until the loop starts over. I just tested this to confirm in Mobius 2.5. Cheers!

first of all, legit set up! I'm a solo artist, currently using RC 50 looping pedal. Various other pedals including strymon timeline. the RC 50 has been good to me, but I'm very limited as far as what I can do with it, so I'm wondering if I should go to Mobius to have more customizable access.... my questions are pretty technical, so typing them out would be hard, but I was wondering if I could pay for some of your time to help me get a set up that would work with what I'm trying to do.

+State Shirt sure! Thanks for being awesome! basically, I'm just needing to figure out i/o for the setup. my current i/o...... wireless guitar- volume pedal w/tuner - compressor- drive-verb- timeline - rc50 panned left and right in system. rc-50 has sub out to my in ear system, also has looping mic out to vocal fx pedal. main vocals run through another channel. main issues with setup. -no individual eq on guitar and looping mic (eq is overall for guitar and looping mic all run through rc-50) -I'd like to lay down 1 measure of beatbox/drumming on guitar, and loop over it with more than one bar of riff or vocals, but each loop has sync where you cannot overlay more measures than you initially laid down, which hinders me streamlining my live songs. -I'm working around that by using my three phrases as separate parts of song..... i.e phrase 1: verse riff, 2: chorus, 3:drums/percussion, recording something and using undo button as a 4th phrase, but it's taking up all my phrases that way and it's a tap dance. -cannot record something and have it not automatically play with rc-50 - have no option for 1 hits.... meaning all phrases recorded play one beat and automatically stop I know there are more issues but my brain is drawing a blank the moment...:) if you'd like to hear some of my looping stuff, I have two songs listed at facebook.com/brianpinkmusic.... they are the first two songs I've got listed.....they are old, so not as polished/good as my current set, but oh well. again, any input you have would be greatly appreciated! I'm releasing my first full length album beginning of this next year, so I need to purchase a better setup for my tours coming up.... thanks!

Hey Brian, with looping rigs there are always tradeoffs. You'd gain a lot in terms of looping flexibility by moving to something like Mobius, but you'd lose the stability and relative simplicity of a hardware looper. Mobius can do all of what you're looking to do (and more), but it comes down to a few things. Do you want a laptop on stage? Could you get away with a couple other hardware devices to do what you're looking to do? I've seen some people use two separate loopers as a cheap way to overlay multiple measures. And you could use a mixer to EQ your separate tracks. My looping requirements are a bit insane, and no hardware looper comes close to Mobius (with the exception of the Echoplex Digital Pro, but that is mono). So I'm willing to deal with the complexity. Hope this helps a bit :)

I have been able to use it with Ableton Live as a Vst, BUT I can't get the midi bindings within Mobius to save. So everytime I open Ableton, I have to remap all the footswitch controls for Mobius. This doesn't happen when I use Mobius as a standalone. Have you had this problem? Any advice? Pretty please

Great Video! Quick question... Why do you route from the Presonus audio interface, to DI boxes and then to PA instead of just using the outputs on Presonus interface straight to the PA?
@JoshGlennMusic
@JoshGlennMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris. I had this same question, too. I can't speak for Ethan, but one article I was reading about DI boxes says that a direct box allows you "to send signal over extended cable runs without losing volume and significant high-frequency information." So, in the case of playing live shows through a different P.A. system every show, this would protect your equiment and ensure a good sound every time. Probably not needed if you're just doing stuff at home.

Awesome video! As an amateur who's not too familiar with pedals, DAWs, and effects, it's really cool to see such an awesome set-up! I had a question about your Mobius-Ableton setup (it may be a dumb question, but I'm trying to learn). How did you get all the tracks to record at the same time? E.g. when you recorded track 1, all the other tracks were recording simultaneously to maintain a consistent loop length. I'm assuming it has to do with "Track Sync", but I cannot figure it out for the life of me. Thanks so much!

Hi apreciate your passion n' your setup...question: what about latency? are u able to set a zero latency setup?... i tried for years but even those 4ms latency eventually always started to bother me that's why for now i relate to hardware loopers... but i love mobius n' i'd love to make it the center of my setup..n' i wonder how even ed sheeran is able to use mobius even in big concerts with a zero latency setup...that's why my question. Thx a lot anyway for your video...inspiring to say the least!

Thanks for watching! I have never really noticed any latency issues. If you're having noticeable latency maybe it has something to do with your audio hardware?

Hey Ethan, great video and music. I've used Stereo Echoplexes for years now (live vocal looping) but am starting to think it's time to move to a Live setup. Mobius looks like it was built with the Oberheim/Gibson architecture in mind. Having said that, do you find it fairly intuitive as a past Echoplex user? And do you think the move was worthwhile? I'm solid and happy with hardware, but it severely limits the options for live editing (e.g. Stutteredit) and collaboration - as we know, Brother Sync can be a tricky beast! Thanks

Hey Tom! Sorry for the delay in responding! Thanks for the kind words. Yes Mobius is very much like the EDP-it's actually like having 8 sync'd EDP units. In terms of looping operation, I found the transition pretty seamless. Though the learning curve is very steep in terms of setting it up for how you want to use it. One huge advantage is the useful visual on-screen feedback. Only real downside is the laptop on stage. My Macbook locked up on me once during my tour last year. Luckily it was in between songs, and I had enough to talk about while I restarted :)

I really want to be able to use Mobius as a writing tool. Does it work just as well with Pro Tools? I work at a Studio so I can't be switching around DAWs.
@stateshirt

Haven't tried it with Pro Tools, but I imagine it should work! Keep in mind that Mobius is still 32-bit as far as I know, so that might be a limitation for you.

Thanks for this, it gave me a lot of insight into my own looping setup with mobius. I was curious, how are you mounting the interface and other gear on the bottom of the table? I like the design since it allows for a more compact system. Thanks again!
@stateshirt
@stateshirt 7 жыл бұрын
No prob! :) It's a PedalTrain pedalboard. I attached some metal pieces that run the length of the bottom, and bend up to attach to the pedalboard sides. The rack gear is essentially just wedged in place with some velcro to keep it from moving. Not pretty but it works and has survived a US tour :)

hello! I really enjoy your video and love your music :) was wondering how you are able to plug in all those midi boards, do you use a USB Hub? what would you recommend? I currently have a few midi boards and I plug them all into a 4 port USB hub. it works fine, I was just curious to see if there was a better alternative :) thanks again for your videos!

Thank you so much for the kind words!! :) Yes I am using a D-Link 7-port USB hub. It works fine for me. Although I found I have to plug the Keith McMillen Softstep directly into my Mac-through the hub I was getting a ground loop hum in my audio.

Very inspiring video, thanks! I'm on Catalina and the OS doesn't support 32-bit anymore (and "32 Lives" as a converter is not compatible). Do you know (or anybody) how to make Mobius running on the latest Mac OS? Thanks! B
@JoshGlennMusic
@JoshGlennMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Get an old macbook and run Mojave or earlier. Keep that computer dedicated to your looping rig. Mobius is great! The best out there for live looping as far as I can tell. but it's not likely to be upgraded anytime soon.

Man I just stumbled across this video and I am astonished as your type of performance kit is basically exactly what I'm trying to build for myself at the time - thanks for the great video! Right now all my instruments still go through a DittoX4 looper from a mixer so the signal is a single mushy stereo track which is why I'm looking into the Mobius right now. My only issue - always having to play along to the click. Is there a function inside the Mobius Plugin that allows me to make the loop (just like a regular loop pedal) as long as I want it to be and then adjust Ableton's BPM accordingly ? Is that what the 'empty loop action' in Mobius is for ? Thanks again !
@stateshirt
@stateshirt 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn't see your comment sooner. Glad you enjoyed the vid! You can set Mobius' sync preferences to ignore Ableton's tempo. I'm not sure if there is a way to then have Ableton utilize Mobius' loop length as it's tempo. It may be possible, but I haven't found that functionality. :)

hi ethan. nice job with the video! i'm a mobius/live user too (have been for many years), but i set mobius up to generate midi clock, so that everything is in sync with the first loop i create (mobius very cleverly calculates the tempo from the loop length). the midi clock is sent from mobius to the iac bus in the mac and then routed into live, which is set to external sync. this means that i don't have to play to a click and all the plugins i use still sync to my loop tempo. i'm wondering why you've elected to use live as the master? anyway, great sounds, man!
@stateshirt
@stateshirt 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Simeon, glad you dig the vid! :) Good idea with the IAC bus to create your sync. I vaguely remember trying that method a while back, but can't remember why I didn't stick with it. I'll have to give this a try. Thanks for the tip!!
@Simeon_Harris
@Simeon_Harris 7 жыл бұрын
no problem. just make one track the master. here's another idea for you, as you're using stutter edit. create a midi track in ableton and fill it with lots of clips. make all of them two beats long and make all of them have the "follow on action = any" (available at the bottom of the launch pane). have each midi clip play a different midi note. route the midi out of the track to the track where you have stutter edit located. have a button on your push launch the first clip. now when you launch the first clip it will play and when finished, another random clip in the track will play...and then another...and then another...until you stop it. good for some random crazyness that can go on without you constantly pressing keys. :O)

@@Simeon_Harris I have been searching the internet for months and I finally find your comment randomly. Can you shoot me an email or describe a bit more in detail about how you get Mobius to communicate your "first loop capability" tempo to Abletons? Essentially setting Abletons master tempo based on my first loop. I have everything routed properly (for the most part). Im using Windows so Ive just learned I need the Midi Yoke. Whats my next step? Spencerprice5@gmail.com Thank you so much for all the help both on the video and comment you guys!

Hey there! The vocal stutter effect is Izotope Stutter Edit. It's pretty simple to set it up to be controlled with any MIDI controller.
