I have a 93 sr5. I bought it partially out of nostalgia for the 89 I had in high school but mostly for utility as my sti doesn't haul anything. It's in pretty good condition other than some surface rust on the frame & around the wheel wells. I have been tempted to completely restore it so I can clean up the frame & every time I see a vid like this it pushes me more in this direction. Only real change I want to make is mine is currently automatic. A restore is a bit out of my comfort zone but between forums & yt I bet I could do it.

Nice mods on the truck, I ended up with 38.5 groundhogs on my 85 with 5.29 gears. Drove it everywhere and no problem dragging a boat around. Wish I still had it.

Greetings. Your hilux looks gr8👌🏾, well done. Takes me back to the '80s. In South Africa, this hilux model is referred to as "Hips". Will leave that to ur intelligence... It ruled the pickup (bakkie) market, the current model still does. We didn't get the xtra cab tho. The 1.8ltr engine was very popular. The 2.2ltr, 2.4ltr petrol and a 2.8ltr diesel engine were also offered. Then Toyota introduced the double cab. I own a 2009, 3ltr D4D 4x4. I've done 532,000km on it. All stock. It feels like it can still drive from SA to Cairo n back. That's how solid it feels😁. 🖖🏾🇿🇦

Man thats nice iam currently replacing a bunch of stuff on my 87 22re extended cab to get it ready for the road again. When you upgraded the brake master cylinder to 1 inch did you haft to upgrade the booster as well?

I did not, but the ideal time to upgrade the booster is while the master cylinder is already being replaced. The turbo trucks use a dual diaphragm booster. Not cheap, but that should greatly reduce brake pedal effort.

So I got an $650 87 4runner, I'm up here in the rust belt too. Wondering if you have a video explaining what you do to protect the frame (grind and paint or...)? My frame is decently solid (no holes), just a small front bend from some sort of accident before I got it that's all before the suspension and steering components (whole front end is pretty banged up) got some areas that might be getting soft if I don't do something. The body is basically shot, but I'll be welding in old license plates to deal with that since I wasn't too use and enjoy the truck and one day get it "presentable" (to my standards)

Both older videos. These frame rot from the inside out in this region, so be sure to spray the inside as well and keep any debris out of there.

Thanks! It's called Vermillion Red and it's from a Ford F150 from around 2012. I would have gone with the OEM red which was a little darker, but I was offered this paint for free. It's a brighter red, but I like it too.

I have a question for you, so I have a 22re engine and was wondering if you had the same problem in your 22r, it sounds to me like it is flooding/clogged exhaust, and I haven't found anyone else on KZbin who is doing a 22r or 22re that has posted a video in the last year.(2019) please help.

My 22r runs good except for a slight stutter when cold. Is your 22re original? how may miles and what maintenance has been done so far?

@@6thGearGarage It has 250k on it and yes its original, the plug wires spark plugs, it has been rebuilt, i'm not sure what year, the fuel pump has been replaced, and a new problem is that the other day I was driving in the mud and it cut off, it will barely idle and cuts off as soon as I touch the throttle, I suspect its something with the fuel pump but have been wrong before if you know what I mean. thank you for responding and answering my questions. I'm not sure how similar our gas tanks are but is your pump inside the tank? is there a filter directly connected to the pump? Thank you again!

Sean Chandler the 22r has a mechanical fuel pump on the left side of the block. The fuel tanks are not the same. I would start with simple maintenance like ignition, fuel filter.

I'm having to rebuild the truck pretty much. I had the frame sandblasted and painted. Today I am working on the brakes so I can drive on the highway to see how it drives. Previous owners did a number to this truck that had a 22RE. I bought the truck from Mississippi and brought it back to Florida took me a year to get the motor in the truck between family and work and things. I would need to get back with you on updates

The windshield. I checked for OEM rubber molding and it's discontinued. Did you just go universal molding? I don't know of anyone who makes an aftermarket molding for my 86.

@@RobFishYT I don't have any. It used to have the 8-piece chrome trim but I took it off when I painted the truck. I've seen the black rubber moulding that replaces the chrome on some trucks. I think it's a universal rubber moulding that some glass companies have.

Awesome truck Brian, congratulations...Tell me , can you drive it on the road legally? I own a 1996 Hilux doble cab, SFA ,2,8 Diesel, these were made in Japan for international markets , and I love it, but in order to get a RWC , you can not have bumpers, the truck can not be so high,the tyres can not be much taller than OEM ,nor wider than your fenders and so on....I have to put me winch under and behind the bumper, other wise with no RWC your insurance does not cover you and a lot of other legal bull...issues,let say so it has to be left pretty standard ! yours looks great ! cheers mate and thank you for showing

Great question! In the US, vehicle modification laws vary from state to state. I got pulled over once shortly after buying the truck when I still drove it daily on 35" mud tires. The officer said my bumpers were higher than the required height for my type of truck. He let me go with a warning, no fine or ticket. After that I bought the smaller & skinnier All -Terrain tires mounted on OEM alloy wheels to make the truck appear more factory and I never got pulled over again. I've been on the road with the 35" mud tires plenty of times since with no issues. I think it all comes down to the mood of the officer, as there are a lot of lifted trucks here in Ohio.

It already had 5.29 gears when I bought it. You’re right, running a 33+ tire on the original gears is not going to make the motor happy.

@@6thGearGarage I'm soon lifting my 87' with 3" spacer I have 31's now and for one of these old trucks mine seriously motors for some mild upgrades I have, but naturally I think I may run 33's with this lift n don't want to lose power so swapping ring/pinion to 4.88 gears was a thought. Have you done this and if not wanna try it n make video lol? Also yes a street cam or something is a future upgrade ide like to do aswell. Have you tried 82 Supra afm swap? Bigger intake on it apparently it helps to?
