You know those movies and TV shows with the stupid trope where two supposedly great players are playing chess, one player says "check!" looking smug, and then on the very next move, the opponent says "checkMATE!!", leaving the first player stupefied? Today, those movies are vindicated.

White makes a discovered check but black blocks the discovered check with a knight, making another discovered check with both pieces now being pinned, but since it’s a double check and the king is trapped, it’s mate. One of the coolest checkmates I’ve ever seen

So sexy omg I hate how people start calling this kind of stuff weird names like ghost protection or ghost pin or ghost mate.. when its just them forgetting the point of chess.. you only mate when no matter what the opponent moves next turn you take the king, so a position like this explains it well.. no matter what white moves next, black can take the white king before losing their own.

here's a funny fact about this line in the traxler that I discovered last year: after 8...Nd4 9.c3?? (most common move) Bg4 Qa5+ Nd7 Kxf2 Qh4+ Kf1, black has mate in 13. however, if d6 Qxd6 Nf7 Qe7 is inserted before white plays c3, the same line c3 Bg4 Qa5+ Nd7 Kxf2 Qh4+ Kf1 can be played, but now it's a draw. the reason is that the only winning move in the 9.c3 line is O-O-O, which is illegal now that the knight is on f7 instead of h8. (also, if you leave stockfish running for several hours, it says 5.Nxf7 is a draw with best play)
