I will buy orchids at my grocery store that are at the end of their blooming and marked down 75% to $5. I have to repot and wait until the following year for blooms but fun to cultivate them to bloom again!

What a dream. Only once did I catch Phals discounted at $5, got 2, and I regret not grabbing more. Luckily no pests and healthy roots. They bounced-back wonderfully. But when they bloomed they were same as others I have, so I sold them... for $20, to people who appreciate that my plants are pests-free and potted for appartment conditions ( alot more holes, bark, with an inch of top layer of sphagnum moss to stimulate new roots . )

I was into houseplants way before the pandemic, but interestingly neither did aroids or variegated plants appeal to me. I always avoided both. I was more into palms and flowering plants (like orchids). I still remember how badly I wanted an orchid as a kid, but my mom never wanted to buy me one because she thought it would die quickly. Truth to be told, I was bad with plants as a kid because I kept overwatering them as nobody explained me how to properly care for plants and how dangerous water (anoxic soil) is. I also loved hyacinths for the fragrance. I really love this hobby and hope newer generation will remain interested in keeping houseplants.

I am an Aussie living in Thailand and I typically buy Dendrobium for 40 baht (A$1.70) and Cattleya for 160 baht. Very cheap! The Monstera's here are also expensive but I bought one recently a bit bigger than yours for 700 baht (18 Euro). I consider myself very fortunate.

When my mother passed away, I was going through old photo books and found a scrap book of my grandfather and his orchids. In the 60s, orchids were considered a rich person's hobby. I have amazing photos of grandpa and his ridiculously big floofy Cattleyas. Now I know where my love of orchids came from and they're so much more affordable now than they were back then.

I must share!!! I finally see a new leaf erupting from the stem of a sick orchid I have been tending almost two years! She grew 2 small roots and I remember you saying that was half the battle. I’m so pleased she will live and grow. Thank you. Without your guidance I would have thrown her away.

I have 8 Tolumnias and I LOVE them!! I have one in bloom, one with a small spike and one in bud!! I also have a Phal hybrid that came from a regular shop, with the speckled leaves and she's fragrant. Such a lovely scent. It's also very vigorous. I bought her in bloom in November, and she's still in bloom now!

I guess it depends where you live. Here, my phals are mostly 35 usd and my oncidiums, 50 usd. The only plants I've got under 20$ is my vanilla cutting. Also, no other orchids than phals are available in flowershops. You absolutely need to have them shipped or have a nursery nearby.

If you have a Trader Joe's, they have oncidiums and other random types of orchids other than phals. At Lowe's you can find Cattleya and dendrobium 'babies' usually in a netted bag. They've been given the term 'bag babies'. They are harder to find but they are usually in a box with various types in them, vs on display with the other orchids.

I'm near Québec city. Choice is extremely limited and price is very high. For standart Phals and sometimes minis, your best luck will get at grocery stores. Check often. If you get there on the day they arrive, sometimes there is a gem or two on the big delivery plate, and they didn't sit in the cold for long. Always check for thrips and mealybugs on the flowers.

Don’t judge me but I paid $250 for a huge schomburgkia tibicinis orchid, last March… It was a crazy birthday splurge but worth it in my opinion. The orchid flowered within months of taking it home and it’s already pushing more flower spikes for the spring. She’s a beast! She’s too big for a traditional pot so I have her in a huge low ceramic 12” planter with lava rocks. 😱❤️

Id love to grow on tolumia, i just heard they need alot of warmth. During the winter here in northen Europe, i think they will be a pain to keep growing. On the other hand cool growing orchids does very well. Id love tp grow tolumnias if i lived in south europe. The easier they are to grow in ur current setup, the more they bloom will makes u more happy than stressing over plants that just give up on you.

Here in South African Orchids are expensive. Mini Phals start from in the hundreds of rands and Orchids prices go up to the thousands of rands. Only Phal Orchids are available in nurseries and shops in my city; if I want a Cattleya I have to order from a Specialist Orchid Nursery in another province that imports Orchids - as for the other types of Orchids I have not seen them but I am sure some of them can be found somewhere in the country.

I'm in the Northeast United States and apparently because it's ridiculously hard to find them around here or even find them to ship here online I paid ~$90 for a clivia miniata plant (that had a large adult plant and a smaller clump of four babies that had budded seemingly off a second one that had died in the center combined in one pot) that was infested with mealybugs. After ~2 years I have I think finally managed to kill off the mealybugs.... I think... The adult plant looks ROUGH from that battle, but it's bloomed every year and I got viable seeds one of those years. I now have the large adult plant, I split the four babies from the dead one's core into three so far, I plan to split the two remaining connected ones the next time I repot, I was so new with them I wasn't confident splitting the final two because there weren't a lot of good roots when I did it. The adult made an additional baby last year that I split off that also looks pretty rough but is alive, and the year I got viable seeds I managed to get all five to sprout. So I was initially flabbergasted at the price, but bought it anyway because it was literally the only place in multiple states I could find them, even if I was aware it was infested, I don't regret it because it's beautiful when it blooms and I'm well on my way to having 11 of them now from that one plant. I've never paid for any other house plant close to that price. I had originally seen one at a job I had 15 years ago owned by my boss and spent years wanting one. I also have a bunch of unIDd baby phalenopsis I bought at BJs for cheap now, and an affinity for amaryllis plants, plus a bunch of more common plants like pothos and spider plants. I think I also have one of the other plants you mentioned... Philodendron I think. It was labeled a silver pothos at the store, but it's definitely a philodendron based on characteristics and it turns out I'm far more successful at pothos...

Really jealous of your prices! I'm in Québec, Canada and the only orchids I ever saw in garden centers, grocery store... are phal and mimi phal and the cheapests I ever saw was like 25$ CAD (16.95 EUR). Big phal can generally be found around 35$ to 45$ CAD here (23.7 to 30.5 EUR) my cheapest was 25$ at Costco. And Canadians growers online stores aren't cheaper (other than unmature plants that you can't find in garden centers and grocery) , they just have more choices.

My most expensive are coleogynes at 15 euros at a nursery. Because I adore the cristata and the unchained melody looked very similar. Sadly the cristata keeps dying on me, but the melody is reblooming. Different demands... Phaleonopsis I buy max 10 euros, preferably 7 euros or lower. The supermarkets keep having them and new colours are hard to resist. Oncidium, miltonia and similar at 7 euros. One of those rebloomed. I'm running out of space in my windows! Sadly the mini mini phaleonopsis keep dying on me, so I have to go for more developed mini and the big ones. Some of the big ones are reblooming. And I got a poor slipper orchid in bad condition but I think it will survive. Tried bulbophilium... died. I would like to try more types of orchid but like I said, no more space. 😢

The most expensive orchids I've been purchasing in the last 2 years must be the polychilos hybrids. There are soooo many of them! My favorite are from Mituo cultivar. The ultra glossy waxy blooms and huge light green leaves... ah 🤤 I just can't get enough of them! I usually go for the more "cheaper" option - crosses/seedlings. But if you go for a particular mericlone, man, those can be really steep. From the phal species, which I love just as much, a FS phal gigantea can be quite pricy.

The prices here in the uk are pretty similar , except I have never found a Vanda in a flower shop yet. If I did find a bangcock sunset I would bring her home! I’ve been growing houseplants for 13 years now & gardening for a decade. it’s been interesting watching the crazy prices throughout the pandemic. I’m like you Danny, I held on until the plants I wanted became affordable. Growing plants taught me much patience in that respect. I managed to bag myself a monstera albo for £24. I was so happy! I’m still hoping to get a Thai con soon, they are around £50 now here , but I might wait a little longer . I’m running out of space 🫣 I picked up a philodendron billietiae for £12 the other day, that’s one planted I have waited 4 years to find a cheap large one . I could t be happier with it. They add a bit of extra jungle feeling to the orchid shelves. Orchids are the true loves though, only collected for 18 months , but I know it’s a life long love . I can tell, orchids are incredibly powerful plants. I’m not sure why, but they’ve driven us to orchidelerium and I couldn’t be happier. Your collection is utter goals, it’s really quite wonderful. So much variety & beauty.

Im so jealous of the prices in your area! At least in my experience in the US, online prices typically range from high $20 to in the $40's, with somewhere in the $30's being the average. Flower store/garden centers sell big phals for $40 and minis for $20. Grocery stores and home improvement stores sell phals anywere from $12-$20. Theres also one seller that while known for healthy plants, really hikes up the prices for everything. The more afordable ones tend to be smaller plants 1-3 years from blooming size. And the only place near me that sells non phals has a set price of $40 and $20 for phals and usually the orchid health is not always that great. The most i've splurged was for a Fredclarkeara After Dark 'SVO Black Pearl' for $95 (including shipping), it was a wishlist plant for me aand hard to find, so I was kind limited to options of were I could order it from.

I bought a mini monstera for R209. 99( €10. 26), Vanda R195 (€9.53) and Phals you can get for R95 (€4.65)... Monsteras is not so expensive... They do very well in our climate and you can propogate them quite easily. But yoi need to know whereto go... Assome can charge aso much more just because of wherr you buy them...

Hi Danny, Happy New Year. Congratulations on your home purchase! I just found your channel, I have been trying to grow Phals 😂 for about the last 6 years, I also have 1 Noble 😂😂. I had mentioned in your video about the seeding Tolumnias you had purchased that I would love to see a video that shows what a seedling Phal looks like. The price I paid for what I thought would be 2 small mini Phals with stems 2nd yr plants was $35 dollars On Sale each 😮. I thought I was going to receive plants that had already bloomed once. I received plants that had never bloomed. I ordered a Mini Mark and a variegated Sogo Yenlin Coffee haven’t seen in a store. I generally pay $10-$12 dollars for mini Phals at the supermarket etc. The Mini Mark was in a pot 1” (almost) 😂, falling out of the pot with 3 holes on the bottom, spagna stuffed on one side, roots on the other. I could see rot on the bottom and on 2 roots on the top ROFL. I carefully transplanted it into a 2” pot. The Sogo was woohoo 🎉 in a 2” pot ! Stuffed in Spagna. After carefully digging around I found the top of the roots😂. At least I could water it or so I thought, the Spagna was too compacted. I fixed that, I hope. I also ordered a large variegated Chia E Yenlin that was supposed to be in bloom…nope! I paid $55 dollars it was supposed to be my treat, the condition of the spagna is the same, etc. The most I have paid for a large Phal is $22 dollars. PS The nursery is in the City I live in. They are apparently moving soon. I have my doubts. Live and learn as the saying goes, I wanted a treat, I received challenges 😊! Perhaps I will be able to visit a nursery soon. PS You should google Nurseries in Canada selling Tolumnias . One is using your site as the place to go for growing etc. I would hope they are paying you a commission for helping to sell their product.

So lucky. Here Phals typically cost $25 in grocery stores and $45 in garden centers. Choice is very limited too. White, pink, purple, sometimes the yellow-red stripe one which fades extremely dull after a week ( like the Baldan Kaleidoscope ). I have more interesting ones on my shelves most of the time. Minis are half the price and choice is also very limited in most batch delivered. P.S. : Thrips and mealybugs are extremely common in them no matter the retailer ( so those bugs come from the grower that put them in bloom ). Who wants to add a pest-infested orchid to their collection? Not me.
