Love the mention of Al's use of the Tube Tech multi band. I just started using the PSP multi band comp and was always after the effect that I heard Al get when he just tapped the Tube Tech on the 2 buss. It made the mix just come alive. The PSP seems like a really great plug.

Nice reviews! Honestly I was excited about the UAD shadow hills version a while back. I demoed it and couldn't get it to groove the way I wanted. The Elysia Alpha Mastering compressor is great though! These days I use the 500 Series Dual Vandagraph and it's a beast. All the engineers love it at the studio.

I couldn't agree more with your opinion on the "all green" Shadow Hills MC. But to do PA some justice - the Class A one is pretty much dope - as long as you only use the discrete "circuit". Either that or the Unisum will end up on my 2 bus.

Fair comments about the Shadowhills, I do agree to some degree, although I have found a good use for it that I hope is worth sharing..... I use both the hardware version for mastering and the UAD version for mixing, the hardware is running through an SPL DMC Console. Using the Shadowhills in parallel can have a great effect at adding deep, rich texture / character to your sound without affecting the overall dynamics. Think of the optical part like an LA-2A, don't go past -3 GR and then balance it back to unity gain, the discreet circuit use as you would an SSL Buss comp (adjust settings to taste) again not more than 3db GR adjusted back to unity gain, blend this with the uncompressed signal and then watch your music jump out of the speakers! You can then add further gain at each stage for different types of texture.... If you're using the unit in serial, anything past 1db of gain reduction renders the whole unit useless imo, so I see where you're coming from, but worth trying it out in parallel... Blending the hardware using the parallel switch in the SPL DMC console sounds so, so good, it really is a majestic unit. Hope this helps, it is underrated, in parallel it really comes to life. There is a reason why the hardware version costs what it does 👌✌🤘

I fully agree with the SHMC. I bought the hardware unit based on reputation (NEVER do that!) and I really tried to use it on a lot of songs, but I don't think it ended up on a single release. It's just not a great mastering compressor. But it looks amazing in the rack.

In serial, anything past 1db of gain reduction turns your song to mush and even 1db doesn't sound great, but in parallel it's a lot more forgiving and can add great texture without affecting the overall dynamics. The hardware sounds amazing in parallel 👍

I simply LOVE your videos. Your striking appearance kinda put me off to your channel at first but you slowly won me over with your technical expertise and candor. Now I RUN to your channel as soon as you post a new video tutorial or review! in fact you are now in my top three YT music production content creators: Produce Like a Pro, EDM Tips and MixBus TV 💖💖! Now, ... how did you get Ozone 9 Advanced for $250.00?!?!? My copy cost me like twice that! And you're right about it as a "MUST" have. I went Solid State Logic plugins and hardware (UC1 & x2 UF-8) for one mixing/mastering chain and I went Ozone 9 Advanced/Neutron 3/Nectar 3 (vocals) for the second option. I mixed the same track down each path and I ultimately just love the simplicity yet complexity of Ozone 9 Advanced. It holds your hands and actually explains what it's doing versus the SSL path not so much. Using it is kind of a no brainer especially along with Mix Assistance of Neutron 3. Those two in combination are a game changer for my productions. I do like the color of the SSL plugins and their Bus Compressor, but there is also a very VERY steep learning curve to using them correctly.

I can agree with the judgment on a couple of those plugins. The DS1-MK3 is great but takes some time to get the hang of, the maag EQ is a waste of money, Gulfoss can really help - but I only demoed Gulfoss, it's not something I feel that I urgently need, same thing goes for soothe 2. Further more I've heard there's a great alternative to the Inflator now - called PiMax from Arboreal (20 Bucks but a better Inflator - from what I've heard). I don't know the PSP compressor you showed at the end, but I know PSP has one of the best limiters (Xenon).

Hey David, You mentioned that there is a typical 90s metal sound coming from the Sonnox Limiter. Very curious about this and would love to hear a bit more. Thanks so much in advance!🤘🤘🤘
@dualityofmindrocks
@dualityofmindrocks Жыл бұрын
Btw this is chat GPTs view on the topic: The settings for the Sonnox Limiter can vary depending on the specific track, mix, and desired outcome. However, here are some typical starting points for using the Sonnox Limiter in rock and metal productions: Threshold: Set the threshold level to a point where the limiter engages during the louder parts of your mix. This will depend on the dynamics of your track, but starting with a threshold around -6 dB or -4 dB is common. Attack Time: For rock and metal, you generally want a relatively fast attack time to capture and control the transient energy of instruments like drums and guitars. Start with a setting around 10-20 ms, but adjust it to your taste. Faster attack times can make the mix sound tighter and punchier. Release Time: The release time determines how quickly the limiter releases the gain reduction once the audio drops below the threshold. In rock and metal, you typically want a relatively fast release time to maintain the energy and sustain of the instruments. Start with a value between 50-150 ms and adjust as needed. Gain Makeup: After applying gain reduction, use the gain makeup control to compensate for the overall loss in volume. Increase the gain makeup to achieve a desired level of loudness and make sure your mix stands out. However, be cautious not to push the gain makeup too high, as it may introduce unwanted distortion or artifacts. Remember, these settings are just starting points, and you should use your ears to make adjustments based on the specific characteristics of your mix. It's important to maintain a balance between controlling the dynamics and preserving the natural dynamics and impact of the instruments. Experiment with the settings and listen carefully to how they affect the overall sound and feel of your rock or metal mix. 🦄🦄🦄

I'm a musician, retired, trying to learn how to make good sounding music on a budget and without years (or ears!) left in which to do it. So whilst things like Weiss may be wonderful, I can't be getting into that arena cost-wise. I buy a lot of PA stuff, never paying more than the offer prices. I bought Shadow Hills Class A at $29.99 and it gave me instant mojo just using presets on my master buss. No doubt an experienced engineer would have got there and more using their skill and top grade (top cost?) plugins. But, for people like me (and there must be quite a few), plugins that can give instant mojo might save a lot of thrashing around in the dark. As I get more seasoned at mixing, I think I will look back (in fact I already do!) on some of these purchases and realise I could have done better by instead spending more on fewer, more expensive plugins. But, that is not how learning curves work, and when you are starting out, you don't know which expensive plugins to blow your limited funds on. And, of course, you don't have the cash upfront to spend anyway, especially when you don't know how committed you may become to your new hobby. Shadow Hills Class A has worked great for me on the kind of music I do (heavy on CPU though!). Love your reviews though, so keep 'em coming :-)

Let's get things straight: the difference between two of the same hardware is BARELY measurable, and it has zero to no impact on the result. The difference between hw and sw is WIDELY measurable and it has ALL the impact on the end result. The two things are not even CLOSE. And the "listener doesn't know" no it doesn't know because he'll never have two mixes, he/she will have one and it will compared to the rest of the stuff on the market and just like with everything else, they will know sub-par. They won't know WHY but they will hear good vs average vs bad. Not going into this again.

why scam companies by naming them and giving your opinion that is worth as much as those plugins and all this just for hunger for views and likes? You do not know the damage you do to poor developers because this video will stay forever here on youtube and whoever searches for info on certain plugins will most likely be influenced by your opinion which for many is seen as true since you are popular on youtube, with a nice studio behind.

@@jackc8120 i don’t care about if he’s get paid or not by big. Just youtubers should stop with this kind of videos because they damage the image of poor developers and small companies. Don’t you like a plugin? Ok don’t use but it is not necessary to make a video.
