That was brilliant - I’m in the process of scanning 2,600 transparencies taken in the 1980s and they all need some editing and this will certainly speed up the process. Thanks.

Hi Phil. Do you mind if I ask what you're using to scan the transparencies and how you feel about the results you're getting?
@DiveDiva2007
@DiveDiva2007 3 жыл бұрын
@@tompatton2086 Hi Tom, I’m using an Epson Perfection V700 Photo scanner. As well as being able to scan flat items it comes with 4 carriers to hold various items of different sizes - negatives, transparencies etc. I can scan the transparencies in batches of 12 and they take 18 minutes to complete the scan to jpgs. I experimented with different resolutions before starting. The scanner will scan up to 12,800 dpi but that took ages for each one. In the end I opted for 3,200dpi - scanning with higher resolution didn’t produce any better results and lower resolutions were definitely discernible on my large iMac screen. The resulting jpg is between 1 & 2 MB. I also set the image type to 48 bit colour which seemed to show the colours best - except where the transparency had degraded to have a lovely pink tinge all over! Thankfully there were only a dozen or so of those. The original film was mostly Agfa with a small amount of Kodak I remember Kodak tending to be more blue and Agfa being a warmer result. I’m happy with the scanned results - the colours are true (to my eye) and the resolution shows up some good detail - particularly after Luminar has had a go at them. Quite a lot of photos have also had a spin through Aurora HDR, particularly when there has been lots of bright and dark areas. Most of the photos were taken on a Canon A1 with Canon lenses - which was exchanged for an EOS 60D some years ago. And that has now been replaced by a Canon EOS R - my first full frame camera. The difference between pictures taken with the EOS R and those from 1980s is startling. I got my interest in photography from my father who was a photographic chemist working for Ilford Films so growing up there were always loaded cameras around. Any films that needed developing he simply took them to work and got the lab to do them. Very convenient - and cheap! All the photos (paper) taken by my parents have also been scanned and the b/w pictures go back to the beginning of 1900s, photos of my grandparents and even my great grandparents. My earliest memory is of the twin lens Roliflex which needed a 120 roll film holding just 12 photos and producing 2¼” negatives. I’ve still got many paper pictures from that camera - and their clarity leaves a lot to her desired. I’ve scanned those too and whilst they aren’t going to win any photo competitions they do serve as a great family memory. To date I’ve scanned 7,584 paper photos and 1,049 slides - with at least a couple of thousand to go. I store all the photos in the Apple Photos app - all backed up to the iCloud and separate SSDs. That way I can view the photos anywhere on my iPad and iPhone. I find this convenient as once I’ve edited a photo I can easily revert to the original at any time - or even copy and keep the original and edited version.

great video Anthony. Have added it to my list of videos I collect from all the tutorial creators. You are coming up with some very unique and useful videos. Now if you can figure out what all the differences are between MAC and PC that would be great and then find a trick for layers (yeah, I know, won't happen but maybe push on Skylum)
@AnthonyTurnham
@AnthonyTurnham 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks phlotographer. Yeah layers are a bit of a miss, but Skylum keep touting that it was a necessity to get the speed of the program up. Who knows though, some smart coder may yet have the solution.... As for PC and Mac differences it's difficult for me as I only own Windows based machines. I get a lot of enjoyment from building my own editing rigs so I've never gone down the Mac route. Cheers for all the comments and being so involved with the channel. You're a legend!

Well yes, I think this is the most useful video on Luminar AI I have seen. I have in the past kept to simple photo editing software so I can't waste too much time editing and so I don't end up over-processing the photos. What you have suggested should cut down the time to get basic edits done to the majority of the photos so I can spend more time tweaking the best of each bunch. I agree that a lot of the build in templates are related to looks that will go out of fashion, and of course all of them tend to need pulling back with the slider at the bottom. Getting a generic template which does not look over-processed is a must, and should enable batch editing. I shall follow your recipe with some adjustments.

@@AnthonyTurnham is it also possible with Luminar to do the opposite to what you showed here. I have quite some pictures from China that I would like to try to get more blackness in to. Recently I came across a Norwegian photographer called nina_carlsen_photo on Instagram that does something similar to that. But I cannot understand how it should work?
@AnthonyTurnham
@AnthonyTurnham 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lennie. So I've just opened up @nina_carlsen_photo on instagram. What a great portfolio! Anyway, first thing to note is that much of her look would come from the intial lighting set-up rather than the post production. Although the editing style is unique and quite involved. Very illustrative. Looks like an almost HDR approach to start with and then toning that back and playing with colour harmonies. It's possible to create something similar but it'd require Aurora too, or a similar HDR program.

@AnthonyTurnham
@AnthonyTurnham 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Khalid. That's not the case. You can save a template and an edited photo separately. What I demonstrated here is only for saving the settings you applied as a template. Changes made to a photo with Luminars tools are automatically saved in the Luminar database. If you want a finished version of your edited photo then you need to export it.

Hi Brajesh. Hmmm, it's not something I've come across, although I'm shooting 46mp D850 which is known for it's low file noise. If you're experiencing introduced noise from a particular setting I'd just ease that off until you're happy. Sharpening settings (radius particularly) are very much file specific. A larger radius is better for high megapixel images whereas it'd be overkill for a smaller, say 12mp file for example.

@AnthonyTurnham 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Maureen. Yes, it's automatically picked up on my differnet nikon bodies when I open phoos and assumed that would be the case for most/all cameras. Sorry I'm not sure if there's a list of supported profiles, however this is the official info from the manual: "Profile. For maximum control over your raw files, be sure to give DNG camera profiles a try. Luminar recognizes the industry standard DCP files that you may already have on your computer (or have bought from third parties). These offer a high degree of control over how the color and tone is handled in a raw file. Need a bunch of free DCP profiles? Install the free DNG Converter from Adobe."

Well, I have created my own version of your template and it works really well. It will be a great timesaver once I have finished tweaking it. One comment is that when I renamed the template , after entering the new name I clicked away to apply the new name and it reverted to My Template. I found that I had to press the Enter key after putting the new name. On other programmes running on Windows it is sufficient to click away to save the new name. Maybe it was the same in Luminar 4. The other thing I would mention is that the Fast Fix or Simple templates under the Scenery collection do a similar job without being too trendy or over-processed. And I wonder whether to include teeth whitening in my standard template - as far as I can see Luminar AI only applies it if it can find teeth!!
@AnthonyTurnham
@AnthonyTurnham 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ian. Good feedback. Yes, hit enter after the renaming. And as for teeth whitening - if white teeth is your thing I don't see why it couldn't be built into the standard template... 😀

Hi Marianne. You'd just need to delete the template you don't want because it's too green (are you using the correct profile for the camera?) and then rename the new one you want to keep and just remove the word "edit" from the end.

Thanks Anthony - VERY INFORMATIVE! What I wanted to help simply batch processing for wedding shots to produce the first pass! Would you stick with the same template using this method for all the images or, in the case of weddings, have slightly different ones for Outdoors, Inside Church, Inside reception for the different feels? It feels like by not changing the Kelvin colour temperature and sticking with the in-camera reading that one template would fix all but I would appreciate your guidance.

Hi Sir Nigel! I used to shoot a LOT of weddings and to get my processing speed up (or down, whichever way you want to read that!) I had Lightroom presets for the basic adjustment and then had alternatives for very different lighting scenarios as you mentioned. I'd probably be doing the same in Luminar and setting up a slight variant to best cater for differing situations and camera settings (e.g. more noise reduction for the reception shots shot at higher ISOs etc.)

This does not work on my pc version. It saves all the settings except for the OPTICS settings. I can copy and paste and optics gets pasted. I have not tried cutting and pasting the settings between shots with different focal lengths. I haven’t yet tested if Luminar AI pastes the distortion settings from the first photograph over everything else or if it looks at each photo and determines what the correction should be for each lens setting.

I bought Luminar AI. Still wondering what's the fuss all about. After editing in LR and PS, I tried to see if I can improve it in Luminar. (no Luck) But definitely a market for those who don't want to go LR-PS route

Do you have to pay monthly/yearly for LR and PS?
@phlotographer
@phlotographer 3 жыл бұрын
@@DB7PHiL yes it is a monthly subscription model. Because Skylum offers a totally new version usually annually, some users feel that this is a substitute for a subscription but the major difference if you stop paying for PS/LR the program ceases to be usable whereas you do own whatever version you have purchased from Skylum so it is more like one payment rent to own concept. @@phlotographer Thanks for that....it does put me off subscribing indefinitely for PS/LR, that's why I like Luminar. I can either update or not!.. I'm a bit peeved however, as it was only 4 months ago I got L4, so still considering whether to keep AI or not!....as it is I'm quite happy using Luminar (AI or L4 🤔) and my old copy of CS2 😊 stay safe

@@DB7PHiL well remember, LAi has no ability to handle Layers so L4 is necessary unless you have Affinity Photo or PS/LR (which you don't but others might). LAi will have Sky Replacement with reflections soon and maybe some will find Bokeh Ai of value and both are going to be updates likely soon. My personal concern with both have been with PC users not getting the same functionality as the MAC user gains for the same price.

@@phlotographer Skylum has only committed to support L4 for one more year - Will they improve it anymore, or just abandon it altogether in favour of AI? ....For now, I think I'll be keeping AI and L4 and see what happens in the near future.

I'm new to photo editing..I have Luminar 4. Luminar AI is a different program?
@phlotographer
@phlotographer 3 жыл бұрын
totally different. check out the manual manual.skylum.com/ . Keep L4 installed and when you install LAi the looks you have will be imported but it must be done at initial install. There are still differences between MAC and PC versions of the program. Quite possibly in the first quarter Skylum will add a free update to this pay for program which will include (likely again) Sky Enhancement with reflections and Bokeh Ai. AT has done other tutorials related to LAi and there are many on YT to learn the program from.

Yes, slightly different programs. LAI is faster than L4 and will also have a few more AI bells and whistles coming this year too. L4 is good if you're after using layers as LAI works with local adjustments instead - which is great for single photos but not if you're wanting to do compositing.

Thanks for the advice! I actually did this and now I've basically stopped to use the luminar presets and instead nearly always use my own one. One thing though: At least on the windows version, the preset does not remember the camera profil and always uses Luminar standard as a default.

Glad it was helpful! There's a bit on profiles in the manual but not a whole lot. Using .dng rather than straight raw from the camera may get around it although I haven't tried that yet... "Profile.

I haven't even started watching the video and I have hit the thumbs down button - not because of your video, which I am sure will be excellent as usual, but because KZbin's no doubt artificial intelligence algorithm is advertising petplan insurance to me. So I left a thumbs down for the ad. Since Google knows much more about me than I do myself, surely they have worked out I don't have any pets? Which is not to knock the AI in Luminar AI, which works well, albeit many other things in the programme are full of bugs for Windows users.

The thumbs down doesn't affect the advertiser in the slightest. It affects the content creator. .There's not an option to rate the ad as you're saying. It's a shame to think Anthony's worked hard on a video to help users only to have it receive a thumbs down because you didn't like an advert KZbin's algorithm chose to serve up. Not cool.

@@hannahmountry5030 I am sorry but there was a question on the advert, within the ad screen, which was 'do you like this ad' with a thumbs down and thumbs up button. Completely separate from the thumbs up button below the screen which relates to Anthony's video. This option to rate the ads appears fairly regularly but not all the time. Irritatingly, I keep getting ads for Luminar AI, which I have already bought and paid for - another example of Google's AI being rather dumb, given Google's extensive knowledge of me. Luckily, Luminar AI's artificial intelligence is generally very good.

Hi Ian. Thank s for the comment. I see you'd had a couple of issues with bugs on Windows. Has Luminar done an update to v1.01 and if so has it resolved those issues. I know the coders have been working under the hood to sort a few things. Cheers :)
