Rats, too. Both are naturally incredibly empathetic and loving because those are traits needed for being able to live in large colonies like rats and mice do. Hamsters are popular pets but they lack the same innate sociable sweetness of character that mice and rats have because they are solitary animals. Rats and mice don't even have the same rights as other animals because they're considered vermin, despite science having proven they are complex individuals no different from dogs in how they form relationships with humans. It's actually easier to form a friendship with a wild mouse or rat than a wolf.

wondertwin yes I totally agree I have guinea pigs and have had them for about two years now and I’m still struggling to create a bond with them but rats and mice aren’t as long-lived as they are and it’s so much easier to create a bond with them like an actual bond that you don’t regret making because they are such lovely pets but I personally wouldn’t want rats because I don’t have the time for them

Amber I know how how you feel, I have kept hamsters for many years and have loved every single one of them very deeply indeed, after my first beloved hamster passed away I was so heartbroken I had to think things through very seriously about ever keeping another one, I had two choices, either I had to stop keeping them because I couldn't face the inevitable, something every living thing must face eventually, or, I could continue to give a hamster a loving and happy home for the rest of their lives, I decided that loving these little creatures and the knowledge that I have given them the very best life I could was worth it, I had to accept the inevitable, the most any of us can hope for is to be happy and loved during our lifetime, how ever long that may be, and they bring me so many smiles and happy times in return.

I have four mice I got from a store and the seller at there was sooo relieved that they were pets and not for food. Three of them are fearful and skiddish, but one is friendly and curious, maybe not to the level of yours, but that's to be expected. I'm just happy to be giving them a good, happy home, even if it means leaving them be physically and just cooing at them through the tank walls. I want to get some from you someday. Especially one from Archie's line. He's so friendly!
@MsLynn11134 жыл бұрын
Give your mice some time to adjust. It can take a while for pet store mice to stop being skittish, but you may find that eventually even they calm down. Just give them toys and a safe place to hide when they're nervous...and some treats don't hurt, either. Sometimes the way to a mouse's heart is thru his/her stomach! Good luck!

I do the same thing, I’ve got 3 girls that were feeders but also only one of mine has no fear of humans. The thing is sometimes it’s more a luck thing, a few years ago I had 2 mice that were two little albino females and they were so tame they wanted to sit on me all day everyday. I hope your mice are still doing well, even if your comment is a year old. How has it been with them? Any updates?
@CrowCoded3 жыл бұрын
@@alexis0453 Salem, Evie, Nisha, and Ana all pasted away! Those were the original four. I believe they were two years or three since getting them! I've, in this post, probably spoke of them or the more recent four from around that time: Sugar, Sprout, Jelly, and Kiwi. A few days ago I had Sprout pass away, who was one year. She's buried alongside the original four who passed as well as a baby, Wynter, who I got for $3, but ended up passing away. She was much too young to be sold (probably a hopper) but I wanted to give her a shot at life. All in all, the three that are alive now have all been healthy, happy, and taken care of. Sugar, the friendliest, is still curious. Jelly is the definition of lethargic personality wise, but she's not fearful by way of being skiddish. Just doesn't react much. Sprout and Kiwi are the fearful/skiddish ones, who I've often left be unless I wanna try and give them a smooch or two, but never more than like...once a week if that. Chain store mice are just a gamble with their life spans and temperament, so the best one can do is just give them their best life, treat them as individuals as they need as everyone can be slightly different, and treat every day you get with as a gift. And, almost lost of all, be patient with them. Many might never 'warm up' to human attention, and that's ok. Our instincts is to be selfish and pick them up, hold them, play with them, and all that, but if after awhile that doesn't happen, take the safe route and just observe and take care of their needs. No need to stress them out more than need be. We can take enjoyment from watching them and just knowing that, as long as they have us, they're safe and cared for. Even if they don't know it.

I do have 5 human children so feedings in mice I found adorable in your videos as it is close to a human baby in needing feeding every 2 hours and also some helping with toileting. But maybe one day, possibly just start with one litter at a time and see how the process works. But not anytime too soon. I had debated on getting a feeder pinky and hand raising next year possibly to have a very tame little one. Locally mice are only sold as feeders at shops and no breeders within a few hours. I know that although rats and mice are both rodents they have some distinctive differences in behaviours and I was wondering is it possible for mice to be litter trained at all?

Mice have an instinct to pee in corners, but that is about it. Un-neutered male mice mark territory by peeing on everything, female mice and neutered males are much cleaner. But litter training them is not really practical.

I work up this morning, and his back half seems sluggish like he is dragging it, not using his feet enough and it looks like his butt has a hard black poop stuck in it. Until now his poops have been a yellow/brown color and soft from the formula? Is this normal?? Im worried he is going to die!!! Please help!!!
@CreekValleyCritters4 жыл бұрын
Sometimes they can get constipated. Gently soften the poop with water (or if very hard, vegetable oil) and slowly, carefully remove it. Other than that not much you can do, except make sure he gets enough fluids (jam jar lid of fresh water at all times, milk feedings every 3 hours or so until he is no longer interested). @@liamdepam You should also support and promote good breeders. Unless you want domesticated mice to go extinct, you need to push for a world where all mice are bred by responsible, caring people, kept by knowledgable people who take super care of them and where few mice are in need of rescuing.

@@CreekValleyCritters While I get your point, I'm not going to buy an animal from a breeder when there are plenty of animals available that need a good home. Although I didn't take area into consideration, I do feel like it makes no sense for me to purchase mice from a breeder if there are rescues available. I'm sure it wouldn't take as many breeders as there are to keep domesticated mice from going extinct either; one could balance those numbers. .

My mice I got as babies in September there a bit smaller should I still breed them
@CreekValleyCritters3 жыл бұрын
No, breeding is complicated and the death rate for females is surprisingly high. It is best to leave breeding to experienced mouse keepers. The biggest danger is being overrun with baby mice that you no longer can care for them properly. Finding good homes for pet mice can be very difficult.

This is kind of a strange question, but is there ever incest between the mice? Like do sons ever try to mate with their mothers or daughters with fathers, etc.? I'd hope not but I know some animal species unfortunately do that. However, I know that you keep a good eye on them so maybe it would never get to that
@K9Katie4 жыл бұрын
Yes, they breed indiscriminately, which is why you have to separate intact males at about 3-4 I believe :)

I would LOVE to get some mice from you, despite living in the deep American South. If you ever open up for business, I’d make the drive (so long as you okay’d it)!
@CreekValleyCritters4 жыл бұрын
I would be open to it, as long as you could prove to me you would take super good care of them and if you were to combine it with a holiday to Alaska and/or the Yukon. You would also need to do some research into how to travel with a mouse safely, it is risky and stressful to a mouse, you want him/her to arrive safely home and not too traumatized.

@@CreekValleyCritters Oh my gosh, I did not expect you to reply! This might sound odd, but you're a bit of a celebrity to me. Currently, my boyfriend and I own five mice, three of which we had to travel a few hours to get. While that doesn't compare to coming up to the Yukon, that did mean that I read up on traveling with the lil' guys. We'd prioritize their comfort and safety first, of course. We're currently keeping our girls in two 25-gallon bins, which we can attach together with pvc pipe which, from what we've found, is safe for them. If we were to purchase any mousies from you, we'd definitely upgrade to a Detolf and keep the bins (and our extra quarantine bin) in storage in case anything goes awry. We've found a vet in our area which works with mice, though we haven't asked them about neutering. As for a holiday in the Yukon... Oh my god. That'd be amazing!!! After the global pandemic has ended, of course. My boyfriend's dream job is observing and documenting animals in their natural habitat, so he'd be thrilled to check out the many national parks and reserves. Meanwhile, I'm a history and religion nerd who hasn't left the country since I was, like, 4, so really a trip to anywhere that isn't Atlanta or Myrtle Beach is going to get me absolutely hyped. If you need any information from me, please let me know :).

@@ItsTumbleTime You sound like wonderful mouse keepers :) There are quite a few issues to deal with when you travel long distances with mice, especially if you are not staying in hotel rooms or do not have a camper. If you are sleeping in your car or tenting, then keeping mice warm if it is too cold and cool if it is too hot becomes a major issue. Still an issue if you are staying in a camper or hotel room but way, way more if you are roughing it. Depending on where you live it can be a 5 to 20 day drive up to the Yukon and then the same back. Flying is another option, much easier on the mouse, but expensive plus you need to make or purchase a travel container that is acceptable to the airline and do a lot of research about what air travel with a mouse or two would all involve, e.g. if you can keep the mice with you or they have to go in cargo, which is much more dangerous. You could compromise: drive to an airport that has direct flight to the Yukon, e.g. Ottawa, Calgary or Vancouver and fly from there. I highly recommend Air North, they belong to Yukoners and are very proud to offer the best service, we always try to travel with them, they are the best. Then rent a car or camper once you get to the Yukon, travel a bit and then before you leave for your return flight, pick up your mice. It is very complicated travelling with mice. The last person who did this, roughed it and one of his mice got a serious respiratory illness by the time he got home after a two week trip. Luckily he is very experienced with mice so was able to nurse him back to health, but ideally you want to avoid this from happening. Mice are very fragile and easily harmed by adverse temperatures, drafts and stress. I know you would really enjoy your holiday in the Yukon, especially if you combine it with a trip to Alaska, but if it includes picking up mice, it will be complicated. I do not sell my mice, just adopt them out, so this will not be an expense, everything else though will be super expensive and complicated.....

Serious question though: Why would you breed when there are so many mice that are so many rescues available?
@CreekValleyCritters4 жыл бұрын
There are no mouse rescues where I live. Buying from the pet store or breeding my own are the only two choices I have in Northern Canada.

Do you think that it’s ethical to breed mice? I would love to start breeding mice but I don’t know how ethical it is and how easy
@CreekValleyCritters2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. On one hand we need ethical breeders to provide good quality, healthy mice for others to enjoy as pets and keep the species going. At the same time breeding is ethically complicated since to do it responsibly, hard decisions sometimes have to be made. There are also still too many mice out there that need rescuing. But then by rescuing, you are encouraging unethical breeding. It is all very complicated, you are the only one who can decide if breeding pet mice is for you. The main issue is finding good home for the excess mice. Assume that you will have to keep most of the babies you will breed and limit the number so you don't get overwhelmed and can no longer care for them properly.
@abigaillovell2 жыл бұрын
The reason I want to breed them is because I can’t find any mice for adoption in my area and I can only find one breeder but idk if they breed anymore
@CreekValleyCritters2 жыл бұрын
@@abigaillovell This is one of the reasons I breed mice, I live in a very isolated area where getting mice in the future may be difficult. Breeding mice is not easy though. It can sometimes take a while for them to become pregnant especially in winter. Females cannot be safely bred past 6 months of age, maternal death rate becomes very high past this point. Past a year old, females become increasingly infertile. This means that if you want to keep your line going whilst producing the fewest mice, you have to breed three times a year, every four to five months, factering in that sometimes it can take a while for them to become pregnant. Ideally it is best to have two pregnant females at the same time, just in case one dies or fails to care for her little ones, then the other can take over their care and you won't have the problem of orphaned mice. Each litter will contain six to twelve babies. This presents the biggest problem since finding good pet homes for mice, (especially the boys) can be very difficult. Assume you have to keep everyone. To be a responsible pet owner, you can only keep as many mice as you can care for properly, it is all too easy to become an animal hoarder and then everyone suffers. This means you have to make some very hard decisions when the baby mice are three days old and you can first tell gender, you can only keep as many as you know you have a good home for. You have to have the rest humanely euthanized. This is what makes breeding mice so emotionally hard. Once past this point it becomes easy though. Mom will do all the work for you. You just have to socialize babies and take good care of mom. When the babies are four weeks old, you separate the boys from the girls since at this age they can start breeding and the last thing you want is even more mice. Also make sure you separate dad from mom before she gives birth, he can make her pregnant again within hours of her giving birth. You need to keep records and bring in the occasional new mouse to prevent inbreeding. So breeding mice is both easy and hard, fun and heartbreaking, ethical and unethical, all at the same time. Only you can decide if you can take that next step. I love my line, your mice are extra special if you know your past favorites live on in them, but breeding also takes away some of your innocence. It changes your experience with keeping pet mice, makes things more complicated and less pure. Once you start though it is hard to stop. Your line becomes like a living thing and you don't want to let it die, it contains so much of the past and your love for your mice.

How much does neutering cost?

It varies a lot depending on where you live and the individual vet. It can range from $50 all the way up to $500. My vet charges $150.

Hey, you said that you bred one of the little girls to her uncle. Is that not bad to do? Like, not accounting for human morality or whatever, but wouldn't it lead to genetic problems? Why are you doing that?
@CreekValleyCritters4 жыл бұрын
A certain amount of inbreeding cannot be helped, but this is why every year or two I will bring in an outside mouse. Last year it was Perseus, who was rescued off the streets of Las Vegas and driven all the way up to the Yukon by a friend. Perseus's genetics are completely different from that of my mice, so that will ward off the bad effects of inbreeding for a while. I do keep track of pedigrees and avoid inbreeding as much as I can with the small amount of mice I have.

Was archie ultrasounded or opened up more to see if he has an undecended testicle? A chriptipchid or monocriptchid?(spelling?) Often times the retained testicle Isn't as developed, so doesn't always produce much if any sex hormones. But it being retained makes it much more likely to developer cancer. It's in a5least a few species genetic and highly recommended to never breed from a male with a retained testicle because any sons they produce have a high chance of testicle issues too.
