Probably not. By the time of Commodus the Praetorians were a shadow of their former selves. They were chosen less for their skill and more for politics. It's interesting that during this period, Rome was in decline. Think about this movie and King Arthur taking place less than a century later. Christianity offered a reprieve from the corruption and bloodshed, only to be adopted and perverted by the very same leaders that killed the Empire. How is the nephew going to be told the truth? Your uncle killed the greatest leader Rome had seen in hundreds of years.

Really it's not a good quote. Rome is not a democracy nor is it an egalitarian state. The quote is more true if applied in this sense; that the slave wasn't a slave because he was actually a commander of army (thus obviously above the plebians/soldiers).
@JohnCenaFan6298
@JohnCenaFan6298 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobastu Christianity saved the Roman empire but changed the entirety of Europe into a state of kings rather than one emperor. Catholicism specifically is corrupt but more corrupt than it ever was. A little less bloodshed wasn't exactly the goal of Christianity (or frankly, just Catholicism) in the first place. The crusades and man other battles like in Poland or Vienna are justified wars.

From Kenya.. As a humble historian, my comments are...Commanders of the northern armies were basically the most powerful generals in the empire as they commanded an army of several veteran legions,cavalry & war machines and could march easily on Rome by crossing the Rubicon River as Julius Caesar had done before..that's why they and this top General in "Gladiator" were such a threat to the emperor...several of them even became emperors after overthrowing the previous civilian emperor( four such Generals in succession took the throne, albeit for very short rules )

Pretty sure it was more of a jab at him being loyal to Commodus instead of him.

No bro, he didn't mentioned that believe me :) If you have watched the extended version; when Maximus is captured, Quintus says that he just followed orders and Maximus replies with : "Nothing happens to anyone that he is not fitted by nature to bear". So like what Rikkitikki says :)

i noticed that but i cant understand how maximum forgave quintus for killing his family. Just imagine what a man is Maximus to really understand that quintus did it as an order not personal hate yet quintus had the choice to not follow order and he had that power.

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the phoenix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.

1:42 - The expression on Commodus' face...the astonishment, the anger, the fear of being confronted by one whom he considers beneath him, a slave, in front of a crowd and his guards, of his guilt being called out. IT'S INSANE!!
@YeNZeC
@YeNZeC 3 жыл бұрын
The bigger issue here is The man he regards as a slave is the one who his father intrusted the whole Empire, the very man who in this time period built the roman empire into a empire worth something.

I was 15 when this movie came out. I lied to my Aunt about having a ride home from the movies because she wouldn't have let me go otherwise. I saw this 3 times the same day. It still gives me chills. I walked all the way home afterwards quoting the whole thing. 1 of the best days ever.

@@JoseSandoval-zk7oz Initially Quintus served the roman army under the command of Maximus. Then he was "promoted" by Commodus to the head of the pretorian guard and he received the order to kill Maximus and his family. The gesture was one of the first shot of the movie, between Maximus and Quintus, it means "strength and honour"...but in this contest was clearly ironical..I don't think at this stage Quintus has some honour left...
